So.... we had a "significant snow event" here Thursday/Friday morning, Yield was @4". Here it is Tuesday, Schools have been cancelled yet again... Due to ice and such on school walks and secondary roads. There is, at least in my neighborhood, ONE driveway and sidewalk that is clear and dry...... Mine.
I was told they do not clear walks because "if it refreezes and some-one slips they can sue you. But if you don't and some-one slips, It's an 'Act of God'."
I say if its 4 days after the snow and your walk is iced over because you didn't clear it.... Its your fault for not clearing it.
These people........ UGH!!

I live in cali, so no a whole lot. But when it snows sometimes we go into the Mountains. I remember sleeding on those trashcan lid like sleds, careening In a tree crotch first.
Then there was a boyscout camping trip. The Scout Master brought Along several cans of areosol and made a tiny cave from burning into the ice for the boys to sleep in. When they put there bags in there it collased and we had to dig them out.

Best snow story....3 feet of snow and a wind chill of -50 F. That was the worst I have been outside in.
And de-icing can be hard when the temp is low below 8 degrees salt does very little and the little it does just freezes again.

Nearly got hit by a load of ice and snow that slid off of a four storey high roof during the melt - a mini avalanche. Luckily the sound of it grating on the roof tiles gives you a few seconds to get in against the wall before it hits, because I don't fancy all that ice falling on my head from that height.

I saw snow falling for the first time ever this year. I moved from California to Colorado and hadn't experienced a snow fall before. Sure I've seen snow like in Reno or Tahoe but its usually already have fallen...
I wasn't sure what was going on at first... I was thinking at first... oh its raining. But I noticed that the 'drops' weren't making any noise... that's when I realized it was snow not rain.

I'm from Minnesota. My favorite snow story was the 1991 Halloween Blizzard. Something like 7-8" of snow between the morning and when I went out trick or treating.
I just grabbed some soviet winter gear from my dad's WW2 collection. Most houses were letting you just take handfuls instead of single candies because so few kids were out. I cleaned up.
In 2010 my girl volunteered to drop one of her coworkers off because she has a 4WD and we had gotten like 17" of snow... we made it, but it took us 3 hours to make what is normally 30 minutes on open roads.
And it closed our airport. For four hours.

It snowed here once. The apocalypse was apparently a lot colder than we had envisaged, and there weren't any horsemen in sight.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I have snow stores, but my ice story is best.
Sometime years ago in december, there was upwards of a 1/2 and inch of ice on the roads.
Except my family had a plane to catch.
What did we do?
We didn't give a damn, and drove through the whole thing, the drive was normally around an hour, I forget how long it took. Just in a standard 4WD truck, no chains, no nothing.
Helps my dad was driving, he learned how to drive up around New Jersey.
Course my mom was hysterical the whole way. Should have blindfolded her.
We made a game out of counting the different vehicles that were wrecked and how they wrecked.

So, I hated Philly because my plane was delayed 24 hrs, getting me home last night instead of Sunday. It was weather related. Now, my Deadzone copy is due to arrive any minute and I wouldn't have been home to get it if I had gotten home on time (due to work schedule). So...I think I should be thanking Philly now? I got today off of work because of Philly. Maybe it does all work out after all.

Thought of another one.
Me and a bud were driving in oklahoma. It was snowing maybe had a half an inch on the ground. Now here comes the state closing highways and interstates because people didn't know what to do with half an inch of snow.
Meanwhile the two of us were driving (being from minnesota the we did not mind the weather) that is until we got to a police checkpoint. They asked what the gak we were doing driving in this weather. My bud and I exchanged glances and said "What? Its not that bad"
The officer asked where we were from (obviously missed the car plate) and when we replied minnesota, He told us to get the feth out and let us through the checkpoint onto a closed highway.
It was a very calm drive home.

I got beat up by snowman once.
It had thawed and then frozen over again as a man shaped piece of ice. I tried tackling it, thinking it was just snow, and almost busted my shoulder.
Didn't stand up too well to a pickaxe though.

At least in my county, if you don't clear your own walk and someone slips, they can sue you.
I've had so many jobs over the years where I wound up being the one who had to clean a sidewalk the moment the store opened, I started driving to my jobs the moment it started snowing so I could put down the salt before the snow. That way if it ices over, the ice won't attach to the concrete, and I could just push all the ice off in one big sheet.

I live in Los Angeles. The closest thing we have to an event that messes up traffic and causes deaths is a mild rainshower. But I have seen and played in snow a few times. Once me and my family went up the mountain the day after a major snowstorm had blown through. It was completely melted except for the shady regions of the mountain. Even there the snow was just ice but that didn't deter us, no sir. We played in that compact ice to our heart's content. I ended up with some bruised bones that hurt for a week but it was worth it.

I live in a college town, so occasionally, rarely, you get to see the aftermath of some student from a warm locale who made the foolish mistake of trying to deice his windshield by pouring warm water on it. (Under the right circumstances, the window shatters.) Priceless.

We have an old fashioned wood-oven which keeps the house warm over the winter. This means that we have to saw around 4.5 tons of wood per year. usually, this isnt a biggie. Swinging a chainsaw is actually a pretty good workout. Last winter however, we hit a new low in terms of temperature.
Im used to cold temperatures, and it usually doesnt take long before im standing outside in my T-Shirt while sawing, because im sweating a lot. Last year it was so cold however, that it literally started to hurt after a while. Seriously, as stupid as this may sound, I managed only around 2 or 3 crates of wood before i had to get back in and drink a warm coffee. We had to saw on weekends in the middle of the day, when the cold was at least bearable, but sawing in the morning or evening was pure torture.
It isnt that bad this year, or at least it hasnt been yet. But maybe im gonna eat a bit more christmas-chocolate to get some natural isolation going.

We don't get snow where I am - but if you drive inland about 2 hours in winter, you can find it.
I've been to the snow (photo shoot) once.
When we arrived, a bunch of kids (maybe 12-15 yo's) pelted us with snowballs. We got our revenge. We made up a batch and put them in the freezer overnight (nice ice shell on them) and found them the next morning.
They may not have been the same kids, but you can't make an omelette without breaking a few heads.

I broke my arm out in the middle of nowhere in the biggest storm in ten years.
I think there was about three feet of snow on the ground, so I thought it would be a cool idea to go out hiking in nothing but skinny jeans, old boots and a windbreaker. It must have been like -5 degrees. Being cold isn't what I remember. I fell into a ravine because I misjudged where the edge was, and ended up landing on my arm. Panic kicked in when I realized I was at least an hour into the woods, totally isolated. It was also about 1800, but the snow illuminated everything to the point where I didn't really have a problem getting out and getting medical attention.

there is a game called turn back.
the object of the game is to laugh at your friends who are silly/drunk enough to play it.
step one, make sure everyone has had a few, and that a nice toasty fire and warm/dry socks are available afterwards.
line up the contestants, get them bare foot, have them all start running into a snow covered feild.
