George Zimmerman arrested in Florida, held on aggravated assault charge

SANFORD, Fla. – Florida authorities say George Zimmerman, whose acquittal of murdering an unarmed black teen sparked a national debate on race and self-defense laws, has been charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence with a weapon.

MyFox Tampa Bay said the 31-year-old former neighborhood watchman appeared before a judge Saturday morning. The judge set bond at $5,000 bond and ordered Zimmerman to surrender his firearms and to have no contact with the victim in the the case.

Zimmerman's attorney Don West told the Orlando Sentinel that his client was charged after allegedly throwing a bottle of wine at his girlfriend several days ago.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office said Zimmerman was arrested in Lake Mary about 10 p.m. Friday and taken to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.

During the court appearance, Judge John Galluzzo did not give details of the incident, but said it happened at Zimmerman's home in Lake Mary.

The judge ordered Zimmerman to pack up any personal belongings the woman may have left at Zimmerman's home and give them to his lawyer.

Zimmerman appeared in court in blue scrubs and handcuffs. He appeared calm during the hearing. At one point he laughed and joked with an officer as he signed paperwork.

His next court date is Feb. 17.

A message seeking further information was left Saturday morning by The Associated Press with Seminole County Sheriff officials.

Zimmerman was acquitted in 2013 of a second-degree murder charge for shooting an unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin.

Since his acquittal, Zimmerman has had several brushes with the law:

-- He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief after his then-girlfriend said he pointed a gun at her face during an argument, smashed her coffee table and pushed her out of the house they shared. Samantha Scheibe decided not to cooperate with detectives and prosecutors didn't pursue the case.

-- Zimmerman was accused by his estranged wife of smashing an iPad during an argument at the home they had shared. Shellie Zimmerman initially told a dispatcher her husband had a gun, though she later said he was unarmed.

No charges were ever filed because of a lack of evidence. The dispute occurred days after Shellie Zimmerman filed divorce papers.

-- Zimmerman has also been pulled over three times for traffic violations since his acquittal.

The Sentinel reported that at a gun show in September, Zimmerman told the paper he was homeless and jobless and that legal bills had left him deeply in debt.

Isn't it strange that a woman accused of killing her own daughter drew less attention then this guy?

Are we honestly pretending that she didn't have a 24/7 media circus during her entire trial?

Maybe she is just smart enough to not do stupid crap since she got away with it once.

Are you honestly pretending her national attention was anything close to Zimmerman's?

Maybe you didn't care about the Anthony trial and decided to ignore it, but it was complete wall-to-wall constant coverage.

It didn't have racial protests and national dialoge about guns and race-relations. But pretending that the news coverage was not as crazy as Z is just ignoring reality.

I'm not talking about news coverage. News coverage doesn't mean dick. I was specifically talking about how much the nation spent talking about the case. And there is no way in hell anyone could say the Anthony case was close to the Zimmerman case.

Mothers killing children has never been a national dialoge as much as race and guns, that's nothing new. The post you replied to specifically mentioned news however.

As for why Casey Anthony isn't news anymore:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/03/justice/casey-anthony-today/

She's not going out in public and is not doing stupid stuff that gets her back in the news.

Did her case involve guns? That's a good way to start a national conversation.

This isn't about right or wrong, it is about an idiot helping to fill out a Bingo card. So many are able to stay out of the public eye after a bad incident, but thank god he doesn't seem to be able to or this card would sit gathering dust.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Out of all the squares I created, I don't think I felt as confident about creating any as I did about Zims. He's the square that just keeps getting checked.

Also, I felt like the attention given to Casey Anthony was at least the same for the initial incident - you could not escape it. So far as follow up incidents, if Casey Anthony had kept getting in legal trouble over and over again - especially over incidents somehow related to the original incident - I am also quite confident she'd be getting just as much attention. I can't quantify that with metrics, it's just my gut feeling.

That is a good question. Unless it is an exceptionally slow news day and someone needed airtime to fill I don't see the need for a domestic incident between someone acquitted of a crime to be deemed news worthy.

I cant help but think this coverage is all just revenge for the fact he was found not guilty. Do we really want a verdict SO bad that they are trying to ruin his life?

Or maybe he is just an donkey-cave that is guaranteed viewership/listeners; think less conspiratorial homogeneity and more economically.

Just to clear, you know OJ is current incarcerated after being convicted on a different crime, right?

Well to be fair, I'm pretty sure Hotsauce was a baby when the O.J. trial was going on so his memory of the entire event probably isn't clear as those of us are older.
