I'm surprised this hasn't already shown up. It's only 5 minutes old!

Marvel and Sony have agreed to a deal that will let Marvel use Spiderman in their MCU, but Sony will retain creative control and the solo movies, but will collaborate on the direction of the character. Whether they go with inserting the current Spiderman movies and simply insert them into the MCU or reboot the franchise again is unknown.

I fear the terribleness of the spidermans movies will infect the MCU and create a soulless garbagey melange.

But Spiderman is also one of my favorite comic characters, so... hope springs eternal?

I hope we get a new Spiderman actor.

Hopefully he can turn up in one of the films without needing to be introduced... again.

I think Fox would have to practically come crawling on their knees begging for a deal with the amount of animosity involved there for something to come from it. I mean Marvel canned the FF comics and killed off Wolverine over their issues.

At least the X-Men are getting slightly better; Spiderman movies have been getting progressively worse.

But yeah, skip the origin story. There needs to be a rule; if your franchise/character has had an origin movie in the last 15 years you cannot waste everyone's time making a new one. Show flashbacks if there are going to significant deviations; but we all get the key points.

I honestly hope that the first time we see him in a Marvel movie is him just swinging into view to kick some ass.

Any other intro will be disappointing.

Wonder what film they'll put him into?

My guess is Civil War. Seems the perfect chance.

In the words of a certain racoon: "Oh, yeah!"

BUT: I really hope they keep the established cast and plots. I seem to be in a minority, but I loved Amazing Spidey 1 and 2, and really want to see that go forward.

I didn't mind Garfield.. but the biggest boon for me is.. hopefully with this Change we will see closer versions of the Spidey villain cast, without some of the odd changes they made like with Goblin..

You have a lead character in red and blue spandex with a spider weave pattern.. just put Goblin in the purple hood and face mask already!!

Also opens up more characters to the MCU which is always a good thing.

Think so, too. His demasking played a pretty big role in the Civil War (sadly, it was retconned).

I look forward to the aftercredits where Captain America sits down to lunch and the camera shot has the view of a bunch of webs in a corner.

Maybe in the Hulk/Iron Man fight, one of them throws a car and in the back ground we see a character leap out of the way land on a wall and spider walk up.

Yeah, I don't get why people keep on spouting this, ignoring the fact that FF just legitimately wasn't selling.

On top of that "They hate the X-Men! They're cancelling all the X-Books!" When, off the top of my head, we have: X-Men, Amazing X-Men, All New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Spiderman & The X-Men (Formerly Wolverine & The X-Men), X-Force, Magneto, Storm, Cyclops and Wolverines (a weekly, which is really quite uncommon). Yeah. They're definitely cancelling all of the X-Books.

Here's a thought: Norman Osborne. I know he died in ASM1, but as we all know that means very little in comic book terms, so there's plenty of scope to bring him back (especially with Dr Strange opening up the more supernatural stuff).

Dark Reign for Phase 4, anyone?

Depends if they'll even acknowledge the ASM films. I'm hoping they don't, skip past a new origin story, and just get on with it. This is one character we can assume audiences already know.

But yeah, Dark Reign does sound like fun.

Spiderman in an Avenger movie would be awesome, just please get a new actor I hate the new guy.

Slightly off topic....Marvel ticked me off when they canceled the cartoon Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes to parallel the movie with the absolutely horrible Avengers Assemble

Well, the Hulk movie were pretty sub par. When he's in the avengers movies though, it's much btter. Hopefully the same thing will happen with Spider Man.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Apparently I'm a dakka minority in that I love Garfield compared to Toby. He captures the spider-man I remembered from reading comics as a kid. Granted I haven't read a superhero comic in 2 decades but I really hope they just build off the current character and story line. Especially since Marvel will be there to help kinda of direct the actual story line to that it meshes with their story line.

Overall I'm excited for this. But we don't need another person playing him (making him the new hulk). Garfield is solid, just move forward with the new stuff. Besides, Sony probably signed him for blank number of films so unless that contract is up it would cost them additional money to recast and who would they get nowadays anyway?

Going back to Rune's mention of canning avengers to bring in a new one, more in-line with the MCU. That was annoying, but I hope that in the MCU they bring a more sarcastic and wise cracking spiderman instead of the whiny one that seems to be in every movie recently.

Spiderman is one of the main reasons we are raising The Boy DC. More hero, less emo.

I’d be fine with him staying out of the new Marvel movies.

I agree with this entierely; he's far more interesting to watch than Macguire ever was, and far more a reflection of the Spiderman I'm familliar with from the comics (and also various videogames actually). He has developed well over the 2 films so far, it would be a shame to cut that off and start again. I honestly don't get the dislike of the ASM films, but then I also like X-men 3 and Origins: Wolverine...

I think with recasting Ruffalo as the Hulk/Banner, Marvel made a very good call as he was great in The Avengers. Sadly, I doubt he'll get another solo film, but I would certainly like to see one (especially if it had even a hint of Planet Hulk about it!)

I think the issue with a Hulk solo movie is that it's difficult to capture the dichotomy of introspective character driven Bruce Banner stories and HULK SMASH rage fight stories in the same movie as the sole focus(vs the Avengers where you have it as a sub-plot the rest of the cast reacts to/around) and keep the average non-comic fan movie-goer interested. You have the issue where you're trying to draw the drama crowd and the action crowd into the same movie and have to sacrifice too much trying to please both. Hulk works better in episodic stories and arcs than he does in film.

That said, I could see something like Planet Hulk or World War Hulk working as movies as you don't really have the "character swapping" you do normally, Hulk having become more of an amalgamation of Banner and Hulk personality wise(even Hulk acknowledges in Planet Hulk that the arbitrary Banner/Hulk divide doesn't exist anymore).

I am excited at the possibilities for this, including Civil War.

I didn't mind Garfield or Toby, they both had different aspects of Parker that I liked and disliked. I just hope the new guy they get is a "just right" fit for the role.

Sony was smart in finally agreeing to this deal given that Marvel Studios has been going strong for a few movies now. Also by bringing Spidey into the mix, they BOTH are certain to rake in lots of cash.

Just imagine the seeing, for the first time, Spidey make his entrance into whatever movie they decide...it will be huge!

I liked Garfield. There was a nice moment in the 2nd film that I thought he pulled off really well.

Spiderman steps in to stop a kid being bullied. He fixes the kid's windmill science project, genuinely shows an interest and then walks him home. It was an outstanding moment that encapsulates everything Peter Parker should be.

I think he gets both the Spiderman and Parker side perfect; the scene you point out above and a few others (the last scene with Rhino, the scene where he first takes on Electro with the cops and firemen) hit the nail on the head with Spidey's traditional wisecracking and 'friendly' nature, and then he does the bumbling, slightly odd Parker stuff just as well.
