Curious of peoples opinions. Doesn't necessarily have to be overpowered, but just something you see and go "uuuuuurgh not that again..." Because you know it means zero fun will be allowed.
My top:
1) Scythe Wraithguard with WWP. They'll come in. They'll kill whatever they want. You'll kill them. There's absolutely nothing you can do but hope you took a list without expensive stuff in it.
2) A Superheavy in low points games. I hope you like not even trying to fight your opponents army and just sitting on objectives all game while you pick up models!

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

I think it entirely depends on context. A single op unit in a mediocre army won't generate the same hostility as that op unit in a top level tourney build.similarly, if it's run by a great guy who genuinely makes the game fun, it won't be bad at all.
For me, the least fun unit is any/every unit run by a tfg. Those kind of people make any game, let alone army or unit a hassle to enjoy...

I think the best answer to that question is basically the unit that you didn't prepare for. I have run several lists for fun and have come across a unit being spammed that I had no answer to because I was taking a regular list and not a SPAM list. I distinctly remember playing against an Eldar player who showed up with 5 Fire Prisms...kind of annoying, I won in the end because he couldn't figure out how to kill my army but was definitely boring as hell.

A lot of this is obviously rather situational and can be subjective.
To me, "gimmicky" units really irk me, stuff that relies on interactions and synergies in a very "MTG" type manner or taking advantage of rules that never really seemed well thought out. Stuff like wound allocation gimmicks, 2++ rerollable invuls, Tiggy+Gravcent units that toss a ton of dice that reroll everything, a nurgle DP walking on the ground being able to jink for a 2+ cover with zero downside (because it's not like he's got any shooting), EDIT: yes Invisibility would fit in here, etc. These things are always infuriating.
Necron Wraiths always deserve a mention as well, things you can't kill adequately through quantity or quality of firepower, and that ignore terrain, morale, etc, are effective against just about everything, and are just point-click autopilot, are never really fun.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Farseers generally make the game way less fun by being able to call upon such fun psychic power favorites like invisibility and fortune (add shrouding for joyous 2+ rerollable saves).

Harvest wraiths, IA tides, and flyrants. All of them have good offensive output while being ludicrously hard to kill, to the point where I just accept that they're broken and I can't do anything about them in a game, so I ignore them and hope I can gain back the disadvantage elsewhere.
Fmc's should not be able to get 3+ armor when a ton of skyfire in the game is ap4. And unlike vehicles, you have no chance whatsoever of killing a flyrant with a good damage result on a good ap weapon, and you can't even maneuver out of the threat area because of fmc's having 360° firing arcs for some ungodly reason.
So yeah flyrants are my top pick for "units that need to die in a fire and have their rules designers swiftly follow them."

Not as much a unit as an entire army.. Eldar seem to be full of obnoxious units and the new book made them even worse and I'm not even talking about the D spam. Warp Spiders jumping around and even out of your LOS, on top of their already ludicrous mobility. Their Wraith Knight being even more obnoxious with its upgrade to split fire everything, stock FNP and the list goes on.

I wouldn't say "any". Centurion Deathstars that are Invisible that Teleport are far worse than other invisible deathstars They can wipe out multiple other units every round, and there's no way to tarpit them.

Surprisingly, Reaver Jetbikes are actually really rather effective against that. No good armour to get wounded against the grav and 3+ jink! and their auto-hitting HoW with rending and Hit & Run is a scary counter. :p

Invisible Stars... it just stops opponents from actually playing the game which isn't fun for them.
I remember a quote -
"Out-ranging your opponent or not allowing him to retaliate in any given manner might be tactically sound but makes the game boring for him. In contrast, a green tide formation charging at him and drowning him in bodies might give him the same chance of winning but at least he can feel like he did something, 'I went down fighting' or 'at least I took some with me'. In those cases you'll find that both sides enjoyed the game and that is what matters".
I might be paraphrasing a bit but this quote was from someone here on Dakkadakka and I can't remember who.

Drop pods are probably the least fun unit to play against though.

I would be lying if I didn't say that there are some things in the game that bother me, however at the same time I will never complain openly about facing it. Everybody in this game has a right to play what they want, how they want when they want and I don't like being negative, especially if they're taking the army based on a theme or fluff. That being said, for me it's all about attitude, you can have a powerful Istanbul chill individual will get along just fine. If you are TFG, even with a fun list we are not going to get along. Honestly if there was anything that bugs me it's the hypocrisy of some IOM players who complain about my Riptides when I play with my Tau and other xenos racesyet seem to ignore their Imperial Knights, Grav Gun spam ect. Every Army has shenanigans, and personally I enjoy the challenge that many of these hard lists bring.

Have played a list like this several times and it is very beatable, just because you don't like someone who fields an army like this does not make them any less of a skilled player.

I think I said that, because I was about to post more or less that same thing ITT.
Generally not a fan of the MtG combo units someone mentioned earlier, if I wanted that I'd be playing MtG. Also gak you can't do anything about like the formentioned melta drop marines. Come down behind your tank, blow you up, pure tactical genius there.

Reanimation protocol. It's frustrating to have a decent amount of hits, wounds, and failed armor saves and then see the one or two that went down to rise from the dead. What a tease, that entire dice rolling process is one let down after another.

To me, the times when you find the counter to invisibility hidden in your options *almost* makes it worth playing against. You feel like Neo blowing the smiths away at the end of the matrix.
Possibly the sweetest 40k moment I've ever had happened just after the Eldar codex dropped. A WK with invisibility crashed into my tank line next to a 50 man conscript squad. I was going to just tarpit him with them and I realized I had the Rending divination power on my psyker-got off that, then prescience, then FRFSRF... I think I had 10 rends total. My opponent basically called the game and made me look up every rule that let me do that but victory was so sweet anyway. I rolled a 5 and gave all 3 units of D-scythe wraithguard Scout... which also gives them the outflank rule... so I outflanked 30 wraithguard. When they came in from the sides on my oppenents side of the board and ate up every unit they proceeded to throw their templates over. Needless to say they more than made up for their points killing a Tomb Stalker, a full unit of Necron bikes, 2 squads of immortals, a full Ghost ark of warriors, a 20 brick of warriors and a Nightbringer in 2 turns losing only 1 wraithguard in the process.
