A new project of mine. Following on from my miniatures collection set in the current War in Ukraine, I'm now moving over to another setting, this time the recent conflicts in the Middle East.

Currently the project is focusing on the forces of the Islamic State. These figures of course are a deal different than all the Multicam and Soviet era gear my Ukrainians have, though their technicals may be distant cousins (there's certainly the potential to do much weirder stuff with them). As would tactics in games differ, with these militants placing much more of a focus on VBIEDs, and generally being less professional.

For the moment I have plans to expand this force with more vehicles and militants, before moving onto possibly Kurdish Defence Forces, Russians or some Private Military Contractors (who seem like the best opportunity for some cool stuff like MRAPs which I haven't been able to touch yet with my existing collection). Its definitely an interesting area to look at with modern games, though something which a few modern miniatures companies have started to produce miniatures for in the past few years.

The bulk of pictures and discussion for this project's over on my blog right now. Ah, as I'm not sure how other sites will treat the topic. Regardless, I thought I'd share it with you guys.

Damn, don't tell me that. Yeah, the 1/50th scale diecast market in the UK has mostly focussed on British and European vehicles, so the majority of the pickup trucks and jeeps which I've been able to source have been Land Rovers.

Currently a few companies like Empress Miniatures, Special Artizan Service Miniatures and Spectre Miniatures do Toyota pickup trucks. However ...diecast land rover pickups go for £1 each here. One of those resin Toyotas cost almost £20. So whilst it may be more realistic to have Toyotas (hell, read up on the "Toyota War"), I'd rather spend that £20 on something like an M-RAP or tank, or carry about a dozen diecasts.

We'll see. I have silliness like this planned...

Evil bear miniatures do a pick up that’s not bad. Think it cost me about 6 quid, it’s quite a nice resin cast and will be putting it together soon for my spectre mena forces.
Although I think his web site is down you can find him on Facebook.

Interesting project. Look forward to seeing where you go with it (and hilarious technicals!).

I believe that the Evil Bear pickup's closer to 1/43rd scale, at least from the comparison shots I've seem. Similar to the Antenocitis Workshop Toyota Hilux which I'd already bought.

Its bad enough that modern vehicles are 1/50th scale, and are so large that the 28mm soldiers feet can't reach the peddles. At 1/43rd the figures can't see over the bonnets. I'll make do with diecasts for the moment, and use 30mm scale figures for the actual crew so they don't look so weird.

The evil bear on is on the smaller side but it works for me plus beats having a look around the super markets for something to use I guess. But yeah I’m with you on the fact that I don’t want to pay 20 quid for a pick up in resin.
Ps forgot to say nice figs by the way but I hope they get capped by the good guys real fast on the table top lol,,,,

Personally I buy all my diecasts second hand from car boot sales, charity shops, etc. Most of the cheap modern diecasts which I find in shops these days are 1/43rd scale, whereas the older ones are closer to 1/50th (if I was into smaller scales I'd come home with barrels of these things...). I don't need that many vehicles, and already have a tonne, that I'm not really eating at the bit to go buy the more expensive options - though wouldn't mind some Toyota pickups just for the aesthetic, so we'll see.

The plan for this New Year is to work out a way to play more modern games. I need a rule set, and whilst I did back two modern rules Kickstarters (for the models more than anything), till those turn up I'll need something. I'm not really willing to learn something new either, nor would another rule set likely be adopted among my player group, so I'll maybe look into modifying Ogre or Star Wars: Legions for this setting. We'll see, but I would like actual games with these things. Out of my Ukrainian collection I've played like two games, and at most the vehicles are used for post-apocalyptic games, as there just isn't the following right now for 28mm moderns (smaller scale Cold War games however...). In part because we tried Spectre: Operations, and it wasn't taken very well by the guys who had been interested in getting into the setting (for too serious for casual play).

There’s a mod out there in the internet realms for bolt action to play modern games, could be worth looking for it bud.

I'd invested in Bolt Action for some World War Two games, but the rules never grabbed me, and I'd since sold off all my rules. Its not there isn't rules out there, its just finding one which both fits the style of play I want, and one which would be accepted by my group.

You may want to check out Battlefield from Bombshell Games. It's a pretty interesting ruleset for modern combat that emulates first- and third-person shooters on the tabletop. You got classes and loadouts, along with vehicles, spawn points, and game modes.

There’s also Force on Force from Ambush Alley games. You might have tried them already though but word had it that a second edition was in the works.

On a side note has anyone tried the skirmish sangin rules out of interest.

Its been another week, and I've managed to make some headway into more figured for my new modern project. Once more its posted over on my blog for those who want to check it out. For the moment its just more WIP images and discussion, till I have time to paint any of this new stuff which has just arrived.

A highlight goes out to finally getting around to making a mould for a set of Kontakt-1 ERA. Its been a long time coming, but this stuff will be great for all kinds of military and improvised vehicles.

I'm apprehensive about posting much outside of the regular sites I haunt, as it tends to be a bit too weird for most. Quietly uploading stuff to Dakka's gallery's worked for the past while, but well, here's another thread (even if its just links to a blog as ...well all that HTML is an arse).

I'll be cross posting a thread to that blog at some point in the next few months which should work here. ...If I can work out which board it should go onto. The setting has enough tentacles that Dakka may be into it more than well, Russian tanks and the Elder Scrolls.

That's a shame to hear, though the boards this far down do tend to get a loss less traffic. Always enjoy your stuff though, hope to see more!

Over the past few weeks I've been working on a number of projects, which has delayed this post somewhat. Regardless, here's batch two in my Syrian Civil War collection.

I'd talked about the unpainted WIPs and background on these vehicles in an earlier post over on my blog, so check that out if you're looking for more info on they're background (which I linked in an earlier post here, though didn't write the thing out in full, but chalk it up to forgetfulness, sorry guys). Here's these kits now painted up.

BMP-1 SVBIED

Spectre's BMP-1 converted into a SVBIED. I went for a generic Syrian military camouflage to indicate that it was taken from old depot or somewhere, which wasn't too dirtied up, as these vehicles don't really see much combat before they're deployed.

On the rear door's a serial number for a bit more character, indicating that this conversion was conducted by "The Workshop" out of Syria. Which may be a bit incongruous with the M113 later down in this post (as these conversion centres would supply their own catchment areas, and the M113 is more an ISIS in Iraq thing), however, today we're still seeing vehicles from that factory today, despite The Workshop being destroyed years ago.

For the moment that's the last of the SVBIEDs which I've built. Three may already be overkill for games, and they'll likely serve as terrain in one of those industrial buildings which I'm currently working on at the moment.

Captured M113 APC

A former Iraqi Army M113 (from Empress Miniatures) in use by one of the Jihadist group's branches. In my previous blog post I went into the choice of paint scheme, which is fictional to this particular region to an extent. The Iraqi military does paint its vehicles black, as does ISIS, however the real vehicle which this is base on is actually from Yemen. Regardless, its feasible, and is fun to look at.

Its difficult to convey the matte paint schemes that ISIS use in miniature. Or rather, I don't like how something like that looks. Entirely matte paint with little in the way of weathering doesn't really suite my own tastes, which is why even things like that SVBIED from my first post are tatted up a bit.

On this vehicle its more of an off black, which is a bit clearer if you look at the ISIS insignia which also has a black background. It turned out all right to my eye, but there's much much in the way of contrast I could manage when trying to emulate the real super basic paint jobs this group uses.

Rebels

More in the way of infantry. These are another set from Empress Miniatures, which at this point I believe I must have their whole Insurgent range for sitting unpainted at the moment.

The set has a bit more variety in clothing than the existing Warbanner: Modern figures I'd already painted. Whilst perfectly representational of ISIS, they could work for other groups too. So may offer me some generic fighters to suit other factions if there's call for it. I already have tonnes of Empress Taliban fighters too though, which with some black clothing (and head swaps) may be better suited to the stereotypical Jihadist fighter.

Local Operators

These are about the last batch of Warbanner: Modern Middle Eastern fighters I have. They're not actually Jihadists at all, but their American "Tora Bora" Hunters set. Representing American Special Forces wearing local Afghani dress.

I removed a few of the distinctive hats and swapped out some heads entirely to lessen the region specific style of clothing which they're wearing. Though having done that, they're still fairly distinctively looking like they're in Afghanistan. The intention with these was to do them up as either local rebels or PMCs, however, they've came out looking perhaps a bit more post-apocalyptic than anything.

Up next

Keeping things short on the text this week, that's what's been finished as of the moment. I do have some more modern figures due to be painted at some point over the next few weeks however.

Currently the short list is looking like:

* A T-72 with Improvised Armour. Done up in desert colours.
* More Empress Insurgent figures
* A set of Tiny Terrain Models Chechen Wars Russian figures with head swaps to look like some rebel faction

Which means that I may be starting work on a second faction for this setting already. There's enough figures for the Jihadists to offer a force for games, and if I can paint what I've listed above and add a technical or two, that would suit as an opposing faction. Meanwhile, the figures would be generic enough to both function as more Jidadists if I were to say make a Russian force, or perhaps another faction like the Syrian State forces or Kurds.

Besides this modern project, which I've barely begun, other projects have been distracting me lately. Currently I've made a return to my Alternative History WWII collection. With a start on producing some Soviet vehicles over the past week. For the moment I'm keeping my posts on that subject to my forum threads on Lead Adventure and here on Dakka Dakka, but head on over there if you're wanting to check any of that out (or for something a bit chillier than all this Middle Eastern stuff).

Last Week's Game

Finally, I would have posted a full battle report in the style of a previous The Walking Dead game post up over on my blog, however, was too distracted to ah, actually remember to take more pictures.

Here's the board from a game of The Walking Dead (set in a Favela somewhere South of the border). Its not strictly for any of these modern skirmish games, but the figures could have easily been swapped out for say local law enforcement going up against a gang (or as I'd suggested, PMCs fighting off aliens).

Set up wise there's not as much terrain as I'd like, and its a bit too liner, just for the sake of how zombies work in that game and their need for open spaces and line of sight to function properly. I have boxes of those shacks, and well, one day ideally we'll play a game with just tonnes of them. ...The problem with having a realistically built up shanty town though is that you can't fit your hands between the shacks.

The shacks are from my Fallout Miniatures collection (which I had a thread about here a good while ago). If yo want to know how I built these specifically here's a tutorial which I made years ago which may help. As far as the "dead" zombie figures, they're a set from TT Combat. Which I suppose work equally for post-apocalyptic and modern games, depending on how much the situation's deteriorated...

To be honest I barely play with my own collection. At the moment I'm looking for the right set of rules for modern gaming, with a pair of sets coming along in the year which may work (Mother Russia from Tiny Terrain Models, and Ultracombat by Radio Dish Dash). I'm mot want for models, its finding rules which are easy and fun to play, and players who're willing to try something new (ah, and modern games aren't really the "in" thing around here, at not compared to sci-fi, but that's how its always been).

Anyhow, back to sticking a T-34/76 turret on the roof of a Sd.Kfz 251 with Panzer III track units. ...Because ...sci-fi.

This week I've been once again fiddling with my Syrian Civil War collection as I continue to expand my Jihadist forces and begin to work on some more generic fighters.

For a start, here's my Jihadists to date.

I think now the force is sitting at a reasonable enough state for the average game, barring lacking some weapons teams carrying machine guns, ATGM, or anti-material rifles. Its time then perhaps to refocus and start covering other factions, like say the Mercenaries, Government or Kurdish forces which I've considered in the past. That'll need a think, with each side requiring their own style of vehicles and figures of course.

With that, here's what's been painted since my last post

Motorcycle mounted DShK

This has been the main thing which I'd wanted to make if ever covering this particular conflict. ISIS and other groups have made use of this sort of mount in not insignificant numbers as a zippy piece of firepower on the battlefield. Commonly operated by one man (though I have seen crews of two), he'll drive up to where he's needed, hop off the bike, deploy the bipod, then let loose with the gun - before scurrying off again.

For my first attempt at one of these I played it safe and went for a simple pose. The model's made from a bike by Empress miniatures, with a DShK machine gun by Spectre Miniatures on the back. Its mounted just to the back seat - which I disguised by adding a bent paperclip for support, and a pair of bags from Warlord Games to carry the ammo. The bipod's the original which came with the gun. As for the figure, he's the standard bike's rider, though with a head swap (West Wind) and his right arm and leg coming from Warlord Games kits.

There's another of these Empress bikes sitting unbuilt destined for this role. He'll likely be driving the bike - as the various ways you shot one of these tends to have the gunner standing fairly far back behind the gun over front of the bike. I'd rather stick to the same base size for simplicity's sake, making a pose like the one below a bit difficult.

Empress Miniatures MENA Insurgents

10 more of these fighters go to join the Jihadists. Empress' figures are intended to be generic Middle Eastern militants, so they do well as these ISIS fighters once a bit of black's added to their outfits. The models are perfect for representing the sorts of combatant in these modern conflicts- with a mix of styles of webbing, clothing, and all sorts of different guns.

I wasn't too adventurous with how they're painted. Again a dominant black colour with a bit of camo here and there to keep the forces distinct if I'm ever playing a game with similar figures. They're perhaps more wargamy than the real people would be in that regard, as to be honest, it would be difficult to tell most of the factions apart as most aren't quite so distinct.

Yes, the ginger tipped beard was mandatory.

Not quite Russians anymore...

This second lot began as figures from Tiny Terrain Models' the First Chechen War Kickstarters, just with simple head swaps using West Wind's ancients range. With new heads (with massive beards) they go from being Russian VDV to some militants geared up in surplussed Eastern bloc load outs.

These are supposed to be more generic than my existing Jihadists - there to fit into forces as I need them - though with their beards they'd maybe not suit as well for say the Kurds (though all that green camo certainly would). I have a tonne of these VDV figures from that pair of Kickstarters Tiny Terrain Models ran - intended to be used purely to represent modern irregular forces, as well, I don't see myself covering the Battle of Grozny any time soon (I hope ...I have enough on my plate already!).

T-72U

This was posted as a WIP before. Its not as involved a conversion as the last time I got a hold of one of these Empress T-72 kits, but does the job.

Spoiler:

With this I've gone for something which isn't distinctly linked to any one faction. In fact its based on a pair of regime tanks - though without their tell tale overlapping armour (which is something I'd love to do, even if just on a pickup truck). Its a mix of sand bags, slat and spaced armour, along with some old ERA bricks looted off another tank. Typical of the sorts of mess you see in this war.

I've been adverse to this sort of plain colour when painting vehicles before. The matte finish just looks a bit samey. A little graphite from a pencil goes a way for a bit of wear and tear though. And the sandy effect was done by letting a mix of some Games Workshop Seraphim Sephia ink with various yellow paints sink into the crevices to give it a more used look.

It wasn't too complicated a build - I posted a WIP earlier - just different types of plasticard, and ERA bricks which I'd made a mould for to churn them out. The sandbags at the front are milliput, with a few rubbish bags by Fenris Games I believe.. Stowage is all from Footsore Miniatures.  For most games one of these will be rare, so I think just the one will be enough - and I can sub in a tank built for my Ukrainian conflict games as necessary if another's ever needed (even the European camo isn't out of place for the Syrian Civil War).

For now that's all that's been painted for this particular project (though not necessarily everything I've worked on in the past few weeks). As usual there's more building going on than painting. Here's the state of some projects other than these finished ones.

BMP-1 with ZPU-4

Initially this was going to be a completely new vehicle, but I was looking at that SVBIED which I'd made earlier from this Spectre Miniatures BMP-1 and considering just how much I'd actually use it. Visually the sort of armour you see on a SVBIED isn't that different from a regular up-armoured vehicle, and with the original turret having been removed there was already a platform to add the anti-aircraft gun to.

My intention now is for it to function in either role. I've only just started on the new turret, but making a cap to cover up the turret hole if its being used as a SVBIED aught not to be too difficult. Obviously the interesting thing here is that mess of an anti-aircraft gun. It seems that they just weld on armour like this directly onto the gun's mount -even when its things as incongruous as slat armour covering an exposed driver.

I would have liked to have had the guns facing forward, rather than in the more idle position that they're in now ...but those Spectre AA guns can be so fiddly to put together than I wasn't stressing myself with the extra work. It looks the part now and will give any force a fair amount of fire power (especially when the modern games we've been playing one of those AA guns has been overkill for tearing up light armoured vehicles and infantry).

BMP-1 with BTR-80 Turret

Where the other BMP-1 went. When scanning through some images of Kurdish vehicles I came across a few conversions where these vehicles had their original turrets replaced with the ones from BRDM-2/ BTR-60. This usually happens when the existing turret's damaged, but the Kurd's vehicles are enough of a kludge that its any guess.

I do have a BTR-60 turret, though that's for a full BTR-60 kit. There's a few spare BTR-80 turrets left over from a trio of conversions which I'll have posted here eventually that fit the part instead.  I'm 50/50 on leaving this as it is or adding more armour, though the armour which I had made for this when it was carrying the ZPU-4 made it look like a brick (I'll save those bits for a scratch build later).

Truck mounted Zis-3

Something which I've had around for ages now, but not gotten around to finalising. My original intent with this was to sculpt up some crew, though priorities kept pushing making those back (and I couldn't justify all the work just to paint them and keep them as one offs. I am still in need of crew for that German artillery piece I made earlier however). Strictly speaking this is based on a few vehicles from Yemen, though similar mods have turned up in Syria in much smaller numbers. For one the truck based mount is going to be much better than a pickup truck at least...

[img]https://thesticksnet.files.wordpress.com/2019/05/tumblr_pn20ubu81z1w636mro1_1280.jpg?w=768[/img

This is a cannibalised bit of terrain, so the truck's already painted. I made the bed from some textured plasticard, then built up the armoured plates, before adding the gun. The Zis-3's from Warlord Games - stuck on a pair of round based for its plinth. Admittedly the gun's 1/56th scale, so its a bit small, but not too noticeable. The stowage is a mix from Warlord, Rubicon, Footsore ...and long forgotten companies which have wound up in the bits box.

As for crew. I've settled for this pair. A Taliban Mortar gunner by Empress, and one of the Soviets from the original gun by Warlord. I may add a third carrying a shell, though don't have anything suitable at the moment -and it may get too cramped (you usually see these operated by one guy to be honest). They'll be painted separately.

Civilian truck

As for terrain, if I'm stealing a piece away I have to add something back. I bought this thinking that I'd turn it into another artillery truck. These diecasts aren't uncommon, so I may do that down the line, for now though one big gun's probably enough.

I rebuilt the damaged bed entirely out of plasticard in a bit of a slap dash fashion. For now I'm between leaving it empty for some versatility, or adding a few items as pictured just to save messing with it and give it rigidity - probably the latter (you can hear me convincing myself as I type this...).

StG-44 armed Fighters

As for what's happening with more infantry. Well there'll always be more of those. For now though, whilst looking through my WWII bits for some donors for my Star Wars project, it hit me that a few of the figures with StG-44s would be great for Syria.

The Soviets donated thousands of these guns to Syria to fight the Israelis. A few years ago they were discovered and quickly turned up everywhere in the conflict - before the ammunition ran out and they petered away. As I've said in previous posts, The blog WWII After WWII has a great article on the subject I'd recommend reading (and well, give that site a look in general, its perfect for modern games - especially as an excuse to use the glut of WWII kits out there).

For the moment there's a set of four of these guys I'll paint up. Not much needed changed other than re-gigging their webbing and blousing their trousers over their German style boots a bit. Oh, and replacing the Stalhelms with big bushy beards and the odd headscarf of course.

Closing

For now that's how things have progressed since my last update on this particular project. There's big plans ahead come October when the Ultracombat Kickstarter ships - where the plan's to paint up some Russians in desert camo to have an opposition force to these Jihadists. Till then I'll keep chugging away at this and other projects.

Over the week or so I'll see what I can do to throw together another post or two on what else I've been doing recently. I've started a bit of a 28mm Star Wars project, am finally getting around to tidying up a trio of BTR-80 variants I was meant to have finished months ago, and could find some pictures out of the terrain I've been building recently. Potentially posted here, or just left to my Wordpress blog (...for sanity's sake, editing html is super fun...).

Til then, as usual comments are always welcome. You can follow this and my other stuff here and over in one of my various forum threads on the Lead Adventure forum (there's a link to those on my Wordpress blog, which this post is also mirrored too).

Fantastic update, you certainly have been busy!

Did you do all of the weathering on the T-72 with pencil?

Look forward to seeing more (and the Star Wars stuff).

The T-72, like a fair bit of what's painted this post was rushed off my painting table after I got bored with it sitting there for 3 months. The weathering on that's mostly black paint then specks of brown and grey, followed by a bit of pencil on the edges, though it isn't everywhere. It probably shows up better in these shots than to the naked eye.

Though with that tank, as I say in the post I was going for something more similar to the real vehicles than what I've done before with its paint scheme. So its rather boring to look at. That's with all the extra weathering and dust (the real vehicles are just a matte yellow, which is just so dull; and even more so to actually paint...).

To be fair, that comment in my first post was directed towards the usual forum where I post a lot of my blogs. Ever since Russian bots attacked the site a few years ago for discussing the war in Ukraine they chose to disallow any threads discussing conflicts post-2000 just to avoid that hassle. I could post this thread there, but it would have to be purely miniatures talk. Which personally I think removes a deal of the conversation, besides giving context. I keep my Ukrainian War thread there still, but its been going for almost two years now without delving into the real world aspects too much ...which requires some tip toeing when posting.

Whilst Dakka Dakka isn't the foremost site for this sort of setting, its where I've posted content historically. I stopped updating my threads here as they didn't get many views (for comparison the Wordpress blog I keep gets around 300-1000 views per post the week they go up), but thought I'd give it another shot with this one.

I'm painting up some figures with StG-44s now, and meanwhile a recent Twitter thread on the StG-44 in Syria has come up with this find.

Now one of the fighters is definitely going to get an StG-44 with blue furniture.

There's also Footsore Miniature's African Mercenary on my painting table currently. Whilst the model's sculpted to be armed with an M249 SAW, his weapon's a bit chunky look. Originally the model was destined to be part of some mercenaries, but instead I'm thinking he'll do as a Jihadist using nicer gear. ...Or rather the appearance of someone using top of the line equipment, but in reality its all knock offs bought from Ali Express or made locally (a very real thing, most of those scopes you see over there aren't the real thing).

So, in my mind he's not using an authentic M249 SAW. Instead rather its one of these. An old Soviet RPD Machine Gun done up to look like one.

On moon miranda.

This is certainly an interesting project. My largest complaint is that the pics are so big that I can't properly view them

What sort of ruleset are you using to play with these?

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Don't the pictures resize once they load up? I stick them in at their actual resolution as if using Dakka's default they're really small on my screen. On my end the page loads up and they're large for a second before changing to a more visable size, but I'm not sure if its the same on other devices.

For the moment we've been trying out Star Wars: Legion for our modern games. I haven't played with these figures yet as its someone else at my club who has modern Middle Eastern terrain, so it would be more work to get a hold of the proper stuff for games. Once we've hashed out the Legion rules enough it may get to the point that we can try playing it with others at the club. For the moment though we're still working out the kinks of our mod.

There's a post up over on Wordpress with some images of our last modern Legion game. The image quality's dire though. Here's an image off of my club's instagram page:

This is the sort of terrain I was making for the other guy at the club who owns the modern buildings:
