Bit of a chit chat thread where there’s most definitely no such thing as a wrong opinion. And I want you to pitch a new Chaos Unit. If your artsy, do a sketch. If not, do what I have to do and try to paint a picture with your words. Maybe it’s a general purpose one, maybe it’s Legion or God specific. All is fair game, so the only limit here is yourself. If you’ve rules in mind share them, but it’s not a requirement.
I’ll go first. Right now, I’m disappointed we’re not seeing Legion Specific Dreadnoughts. Yes everyone gets a Hellbrute option, but surely there must be more to it? And so my pitch is a World Eaters Dreadnought.
Inspiration here comes not just from my love of all things Dreadnought, but the Red Butchers. Rather than type out what Red Butchers are, here’s a handy dandy link
They’re….pretty much Hellbrutes before Hellbrutes came to be. World Eaters so lost to the Nails, their armour can be remotely shutdown as the only way to contain them between battles.
Let’s…scale that up to a Hellbrute, yeah? Not only do they strike me as “ideal” candidates as a terror weapon, but the things you could mount on its hull. No ranged weapons, just close combat. And add in chain weapons everywhere. Round the waist. On the wrists, feet, hips, shoulders. A truly psychotic walking blender. Something you unchain and direct to the front line - or even drop in from a Not Appearing In This Game Flyer.
Rules wise I envisage it as a sod to deal with once it makes combat. Perhaps dishing out 1 Wound on the enemy unit for each ‘1’ to hit, to represent the sheer danger of fighting this walking blender, perhaps a Mortal Wound. The sort of threat your opponent has to focus on, giving the rest of your infantry a break.
Against vehicles and bunkers etc, perhaps a charge bonus to represent it’s essentially a multiple tonne walking battering ram piloted by a psychopath with zero grip on reality.
As you can tell I’ve gone for Rule of Cool here, but don’t treat that as a benchmark for thread participation. Because now, Dear Reader, it’s your turn. Go crazy, or keep it fairly conservative. Your choice!

I've always liked the idea of World Eaters with heavy weapons. Imagine a Khorne Berserker Devastator Squad equivalent, perhaps with their weapons limited to Heavy Bolters or Heavy Flamers, but they'd get a decent bonus rule to make up for that.
Great thread. I'd want to see the vehicles the traitor guard churn out. Show me the blood pact's stalk tanks, show me civilian vehicles with weapons crudely bolted on top, show me improvised grimdark walkers. The standard human cultists and guard regiments are supposed to be the largest part of chaos by far, and I'd imagine they wouldn't adhere to the stc-only dogma any longer.
To make this concrete, I posit the <name pending>. Think of an enclosed penitent engine with a face (a mix of penitent engine, armiger and talos without the fleshy bits). No demons, purely mechanical. Not that sturdy, more than a little rusty and rough around the edges. An industrial, blanchitsu monstrosity. A sooty close combat horror with vicious scissor-like claws. Manufactured by twisted cultists, I see it stalking the ruins of a hive district terrifying gangers and arbites alike.
Mutated Tank with a bunch of options, especially a mutli-warpflamer one. Big cannon.
Has powers to either enhance it's weaponry in some what or debuff the target in some way. Maybe a power to allow out of LoS shooting (Without all the drawbacks from the dataslate)
Possessed rhino. Its hull has been infiltrated by daemons, the last squad to embark has been hideously fused into the vehicle. Different panels have popped out with talons & teeth to serve as legs and melee weapons. The main body opens up on top like a venus flytrap, giving visual on the fused passengers while tentacles emerge to grab prey and drag them in.
Chosen cultists. Regular humans who have done well enough that they've accumulated a decent chunk of gifts and now serve as specialists. Stealth/special ops squad with themes for objective control and avoiding line of sight. Decent all-around weapons but a bunch of special grenade types, and can deploy land mines in a piece of terrain at the start of the battle.

yeah, I want to see Blood Pact in the new Astra Militarum codex. GSC has brood brothers already, and I'd love to run an allied Chaos Knight without doing what I did last time...
Allegiance Oath Description Ref
Sacristan Pledge - Add 1 to the Wounds characteristic of a model with this Questor Allegiance Oath (if this model is TITANIC, add 2 to its Wounds characteristic instead)
- At the start of each of your Command phases, a model with this Questor Allegiance Oath regains 1 lost wound. Codex: Imperial Knights p65
Lord of War
Knight Warden
Selections: Freeblade, Martial Tradition: Peerless Warrior, Meltagun, Questor Mechanicus, Stormspear Rocket Pod, Thunderstrike gauntlet, Titanic Feet
And if not the Slaughterbrute, how about some Daemon Engines, rather than Daemon Engines. Y'know, more twisted machine inhabited by a daemon, and less cosplaying Komodo Dragon.
All of the small gribblies from the Gellarpox would be cool as actual units. Termites, fly swarms, nasty worms, all kinds of creepy Nurgle things that want to eat you.
Also Pestigors and Khorngors, let the beastmen return to 40K.
Oh, and btw there hasn't been a thread about Chaos Primaris in a while, so I might as well throw them in here.

Chaos Primaris are easy.
Alpha Legion Cell poses as a near extinct Chapter. Obtain Greyshields. Arrange to sell them to Fabius Bile, naming their price. I’d recommend a big bottle of Tizer, half a pound of gobstopper and 12, yeah 12 Sherbert Dib-Dabs.

For a while now, I've really wanted to do a kitbash of (Slaaneshi?) CSM with daemonic longbows. A bit silly, I know, but imagine the draw strength you could get on an astartes bow. I'm picturing it firing a variety of arrows with minor daemons bound in them for a variety of special effects or possibly arrows whose heads are made of gems and precious metals from Slaanesh's realm. Think heart-seeker arrows that guide themselves towards your desires, arrows that explode into clouds of soporific fog, arrows that, when you miss, continue to flit around the battlefield until they find you (almost like the old spore mine rules).
ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.
Once upon a time, in the dim days of 6th ed and its wild ally rules, I believe, I played Khorne Tau. I think that's what we need more of. Not necessarily my lulzy take, what with GW being so dour about 40k these days, but Chaos Xenos Letting non-humans have some fun for a change.
But because I'm me and everyone loves me for it I'll stick with Khorne Tau for this thread. Rules? Meh. If you play with passion, Tau overcome in close combat just fine. Been there, done that. I have complete confidence in my Tau. So only cosmetics, you ask? Only? This is the undisputed, vital part. You have to get the idea across. Live it. Breathe it. Believe just as you make others believe. You'll get rewarded with probability-defying amounts of 12" charges and unbelievable failure rates of enemy armor saves. Trust me.
Ko'vash Mont'au!
Nehekhara lives! Sort of!
Why is the rum always gone?
I've always liked the idea of some kind of demonic transport. Basically, a sealed box in the form of a chained rhino or land raider that could transport possessed or demons. Maybe it could be a purchasable upgrade?
A Word Bearer's witch coven. A squad of demi psykers, similar to Eldar warlock squads.
Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?
I'll echo the call for a better representation of the cultists and general hangers on that chaos get
while the "easy" route would be to simply give them a section in a guard codex, or a supplement to the guard codex, really they kind of need thier own thing to really have justice.
dark mechanicum too.
chaos soup is the best soup, and we have the meat chunks and the veg, but we're missing the broth its swimming in!
Just give Chaos back it's propper mortal ruleset.
Aka r&h.
Make the list customisable to encompass the gauntlet from dark mech-cult-traitorregiment and bam, behold Chaos has got a lot of evil gribbly back.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units." Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?" Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?" GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!" Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.
Gadzilla666 wrote: Some infantry (and they should be Troops) that can Infiltrate. Seriously, why did all CSM infantry forget how to do that?
Considering everything about "the enemy within" and how the greatest threat Chaos poses is not from conventional force-on-force actions, but on subversive activity undermining the Imperium from within or instigating revolts, and the fact that the Imperium goes through far more effort to enforce the compliance of its troops and people, it certainly does strike me as off that Chaos forces have limited to nonexistent options to represent infiltrating units.
I think Cultist-grade units being able to ambush/infiltrate/outflank by default and CSM being able to buy it as an upgrade would be a cool and thematic thing for the army.
Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!
Iron Warrior siege weapon that is mostly an oversized obliterator with indirect daemon mortar growing out of it. Chains hold it down to ground to stop going berserk, several psychic cultists surround it to keep it under control and provide sacrifice to a furnace in front.

They had that baseline for years. Decades, even as they were one of the first chaos marine army lists*. The only thing it needed to work was to not be taken away.
*one the first bits of in-character flavor text ever written for World Eaters ended like this: "Blood of the Blood God! Suppressing fire, forward and centre. Heavy Bolters range 250. Move scum..."
