Why weren't they disbanded? Aren't chapters supposed to be disbanded and used to form new chapters when their numbers fall below 300? How were they able to replace the lost terminator suits?

It never pays to examine fluff too closely because it doesn't make sense. It is internally and externally logically inconsistent.

I think that the situation where one of the major chapers is almost wiped out is where the AdMech jumps in with their stored gene-seed in order to try and save the day. And they may have gotten some backup from some of their successors, as I's assume they and the High Lords wouldn't want one of the founding legions gone; that would be too much of a blow to propaganda. That would also account for this incident not being mentioned.

Re the fluff, the only logical explanation that I can come up with is that the Imperium could hardly let a first founding legion be disbanded could they? Added to which, I don't think its actually up to any Imperial body to determine the fate of a Space Marine chapter unless its the Inquisition trying to declare them excommunicatus Traitoris. Space Marines are notoriously insular and self governing so its unlikely that the BA would have a) advertised the fact that they were so below strength or b) asked for or invited any assistance/interference from other Imperial agencies.
On a more practical level, I can't help but think that in the inevitable Blood Angels codex, this near decimation in the (for the Imperium) relatively recent past will be used to explain why the BA have 'lain low' (i.e not had a proper codex) of late. Or is that just me being a tad cynical?

That, or the lack of editors (at at least, competent ones) at GW/ BL has led to anther background screw up.

Well you say that but I seem to recall someone mentioning that there were very high casualty rates mentioned in the original Hulk. In any case, I think its a little harsh to say that its 'another' background screw up. I don't think that they can be accused of making that many 'screw ups' with their IP over the last few years. I don't always agree with everything that they do (for example I really don't see why 5th edition 40k was necessary as it changed practically nothing from 4th edition) but I actually think that mostly they have done a good job of expanding the 40k universe and its background.

Have you read a lot of Black Library's offerings?
If there was ever a line of books that needed a better staff of editors I'm not sure I've heard of it.

Yes, yes I have read a lot of the Black Library's 40k output. And I don't see a whole hell of a lot wrong with it. Ok the Blood Angels books had some weird inconsistencies with the established fluff, but other than that (which I feel is down to artistic licence as much as anything else) I am well happy with all of it.

Anyone have any mismoldings on their sprues? I was just going through mine and clipping out the figs, when I noticed the one stealer (that comes on the sprue you get two of, holding the dangling skull by the wires) had a mismolded skull. Came out more like a blob than bone. I only noticed it as there were two in the box, and the other was good (or at least good enough). I've noticed some other soft moldings, but generally they were in undercut areas and to be expected. This one though looked bad. Anyone else spot any problems like this?

I have heard a few rumblings (mainly on whingeseer) about bad casts, broken sand timers etc in the box. I also know from here and vrious other sources that GW seem to be replacing faulty components quickly and nicely, so if its really that bad I would suggest that you give them a call and see what they say. I have to say, regardless of what you may think of GW (and some days I can't help but pine for 'the good old days') they seem to have got the whole package on this sewn up - standard of package is generally excellent and any that aren't seem to be replaced quick as a flash. Am I the only optimist sat here hoping that new SH is a solid sign of things to come with GW?

I've already sent an email to GW so we'll see what happens. I was more posting this to see if anyone else had this type of mismolding. Overall I'm delighted with the set, sadly I don't see GW doing anything else like it though I'd love to be proven wrong (new BB edition maybe?).

I've been thinking about it.
Obviously you have to make them great at shooting and terrible at H2H, say 1D6-1.
Probably give each Tau figure 6 action points, and a pulse carbine with grenade launcher.
Pinch the grenade rules out of Deathwing, or to simplify ammo tracking concerns, make the pulse carbine 3D6, kills on a 6. (Effectively combining pulse and grenade shooting into one action.)
It might be fun to let them be more manoeuverable too, perhaps let drones move past in corridors and shoot from overhead, something like that.
Tau don't have a flame thrower, so perhaps something could be done with markerlights to get around that.

It hasn't because GW's novels exist in much the same way as their Codices - in a vacuum. They're written independantly of one another with only the occasional crossing of paths (Horus Heresy being a good example). You won't hear about James Swallow's Blood Angel fluff in the next Blood Angel Codex any more than you would expect the next Necron Codex to be properly playtested...

Don't a few of the late 3rd/4th edition Codices go against this by just using excerpts from BL books as filler fluff? I thought Witch Hunters, Daemonhunters, and maybe IG and Chaos had some excerpts attributed to real books.
I'd check, but all of mine are packed as I'm moving soon.

Its more the fact that there are things that can happen in the books (for coolness) that you can't have happening in the game rules (for balance). A good example would be the fact that Gaunts Ghosts quite often (well more than once) take on Chaos Marines, in one case even a Dread. In the rules this would be ludicrous but as a cool thing to happen in the book its perfectly valid. They cannot be expected to stick to the exact 'spirit' of the 40k rules or the books would get very boring very quickly - no-one wants to read an Imperial Guard nove if everyone just gets killed in droves every 30 secs.

If the Tau were going to clear out a massive chunk of ship(s), the most feasible solution would be some smaller battlesuit that would have more leeway in the narrow corridors than its larger brother yet have more protection than the average fire warrior. You don't send in a boy to do a man's work when you can synthasize some half manlike machine for that boy to pilot, especially if that boy lacks a nose and is kinda grayish.
