A boat is the swiss army knife of disaster plans.

Hmmm...

Dragons can fly, vikings are water-borne amphibious warfare experts, skynet could kill your boat with multi-laser death.... Really the only thing on that list that boats are useful for is the zombie thing.

Unless the zombies get on board, in which case you got yourself a floating zombie prison.

But what is the context and extent of the flood? The ice caps (and all of antartica) instantly melt over-night? 40 days and nights of rain? What kind of time do I have?

I'll assume it's instantaneous, at night in the Central Time Zone while I'm asleep, and causes the sea level to increase by 200 feet. My house is 20 miles from Galveston Bay and only 23' above sea level. The sudden wall of water would engulf my home, drowning me, my gaming stuff, and my cats.

So, in this situation, I'd die in my sleep. I might possibly be awoken by the surging wall of water, which I imagine would sound like a freight train. It would probably cause tremors in the earth that would also shake me from my sleep. In which case, I'd still drown, but have a horrific sense of forboding and fear immediately before the water hit me.

Fun game!

Several options.

1 : Rise my city up on gigantic hydraulic legs, roaming the oceans like a king.
2 : Build a longboat and roam the seas, burning and pillaging.
3 : Flee to China and build my fortune. Use it to build a stupidly improbable underwater Art Deco city filled with the worlds great thinkers.
4 : Sand bags. Lots and lots of sand bags.
5 : Take to the skies in an airship.
6 : Have surgery to make myself into a dolphin.

Well, being a true Englishman, I would simply not give in to this uppity water. I would continue my daily life, defiantly breathing the water and walking at full speed along the sunken pavements. Resistance be damned! Drowning is for foreigners!

Technically they cant swim like humans can but according to the book, they can walk along the ocean floor (even beyond crush depth) and some can float...

But yes, they can survive in water for long periods of time.

Actually, the world has indeed been flooded before. It happened around 5600BC, give or take a few decades. It was an event that occured in a most unexpected location, the environs of what is today the Black Sea. And it was so massive and devastating that it arguably spawned not only the 'Noah' Flood story but also the Flood stories that have been preserved in a number of other cultures besides. The general consensus that is pretty much know known as fact is that around the afore mentioned date the Mediterranean broke through the land barrier and salt water poured through with a force 200 times that of Niagra Falls! This raised the level of the Black Sea by over 300 feet! And as if that wasn't bad enough, it has been discovered that between 14,000BC and 5000BC the WORLD'S sea levels rose by no less than 120 to 130 metres! Thats around 400 feet! But could it happen again? The short answer is yes and it may be closer than you think too! But that's another story...what would I do though? I think that I best keep that a secret. But it would be very wrong, very very wrong indeed...
