Well, can you tell me about le Green ones then? Or why Prospero Burns, Legion & Thousand Sons all have purple? Or blue for The First Heretic and Fulgrim? I think there's too many anomalies for that to make sense IMHO...

Anyone else read the preview of 'The Primarchs' in the latest Hammer and Bolter? It's got the first half of 'The Lion' by Gav Thorpe. The second half is in the next Hammer and Bolter.
I was pretty harsh on Gav's last Heresy book, but I'm gonna have to break out the really harsh language on this one. Granted I've only read the first half, but it was like a filler episode of Star Trek Voyager. The story picks up right where ADB's fantastic short story in Age of Darkness left off, and the contrast is just plain embarrassing. I know Abnett and ADB can't write everything that they put out, but between this, Deliverance Lost, and that little Blood Cog episode I had in Hammer and Bolter a while back, I'm pretty much done with Black Library outside of authors I know I can trust.
Know No Fear was awesome though.

It's a triumvirate of reasons.
1. I write much slower than most of the other authors - while I'm luckier than most in that it's my full-time job to write, I'm still a lot slower than they are.
There are BL authors who don't write as a full-time job?
Really enjoying Know No Fear; Abnett has really fleshed out the Ultramarines, in the same way as he had done so with the Space Wolves previously. Although I have to be honest, I preferred the SW book, perhaps because of the content of KNF (essentially one big fight) there are times when I find myself skim-reading over 'Brother x's head exploded' after reading it for the 15th time. Certainly, it's possible to become desensitised to it all, despite Abnett's colourful and inventive use of adjectives concerning how armour can be destroyed. I wouldn't have minded another 100 pages or so, a bit more detail from the side of the Word Bearers and their reasoning behind committing such a heinous act, rather than them just being 'crimson armour, covered in script, emerging from the mist'. There is some attempt at explanation, from the perspective of Tchure..
Spoiler:
..Although I thought it came across as lacking in substance, and not really believable. "I wanted to do it, because it is the worst type of betrayal" Surely you are not advocating evil for evils sake Mr. Abnett? To be fair however, I don't think it is the authors fault. The template for chaos was cast with 'False Gods', where rather than trying to create a rationale* for why Horus would turn on the Emperor, the entire premise of the Heresy falls onto the cheapest of plot devices: essentially 'a wizard did it'. I loved The First Heretic because it re-introduced an element of the original 'chaos', and of what that 8-pointed star was meant to represent - of infinite possibility, the opening of a pandora's box that once unsealed can never be closed again. What did the possessed marines see when they gazed into the eye? Anyway, I digress. I thought Abnett tried to make a go of padding out the character of Lorgar, but make no mistake this is very much a book about the boys in blue, with their red brethren little more than their dastardly opponents, who appear occasionally to do something scary.
There have also been a couple of small inconsistencies in the story, such as
Spoiler:
The one marine captain (Venanatus?) berating another captain (Sullus) for wanting to make a headstrong attack directly into the enemy, but then advocating the very same thing about 15 pages later
However, it doesn't really detract from the story (unlike the blooper in The Outcast Dead), and actually the UM are painted in a far more characterful and endearing way than they are as part of the official codex books.
*Although this lack of respect for the laws of rationality extends to the cover. "In space, no-one can hear you scream (unless it's a Primarch screaming)"
Thinking back to Know No Fear, which as you say is basically one big fight, I'm almost surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did. There's very little background, since that was all set up in previous books, and most of the characters are guys that you know aren't going to last all that long. The Word Bearers come across as inexplicably evil. The heroes are Ultramarines (ugh).
And yet the book was a joy to read. I never felt I was reading dull bolter porn. Abnett really is the master of this stuff. Not only were the individual scenes described in way that grabbed hold of you, and characters crafted in ways that drew you into them, but the book as a whole had a strong concept applied to it that raised it above a mere exposition of events. He often plays about with a book on this big picture level, and in many wildly different ways. On this occasion the whole book had the feel of 'the event', like a 9/11 type situation being analysed on a 24 hour news channel.

What did you think of Deliverance Lost? I think Gav Thorpe is one of the most inconsistent writers at BL, not so much in terms of his style of writing, but rather the content of the stories. I loved Angels of Darkness, as well as his DA short story, but The Purging of Kadillus was instantly forgettable (except the bit with Demiurg at the start ).

Here's what I wrote about Deliverance Lost in the old thread:
me wrote:I'm halfway through and considering calling it quits. I finished Battle for the Abyss. It's not as bad as that cursed tome, but this is covering events that I should be interested in and it's just enormously disappointing. The thing that makes me want to quit is that it's been getting steadily more goofy as the book progresses, and I don't want my lasting impression of the characters or legions involved to be permenantly tainted. I've been dreading the events covered in <redacted> being picked up by a weaker author, but now it's happened and all the interesting possibilities for one of my favourite legions have come to nothing.
me wrote:That's because earlier books went out of their way to set up the astartes, and the primarchs in particular, as awe-inspiring beings removed from humanity, with gravitas suitable to the events being covered. Deliverance Lost has marines and primarchs alike chatting like Joe the imperial guardsman, clumsily undoing the careful work of the more skilled authors in the series. Previous glimpses of the primarchs and the Emperor have been few and far between for good reason. The dialogue with the Emperor incautiously splurged out in this book was cringe worthy, and the generic and wholly unnecessary dungeon quest it set up was goofy in the extreme. I can do without reading interventions by the Emperor that have all the gravitas of a senior employee meeting with his line manager.
I don't want every book to be written from the perspective of a human onlooker, but if that technique is not to be used then there still has to be some attempt to properly portray the distance between the astartes and humanity, and the majesty of the primarchs. If authors incapable of doing this must be allowed to contribute to the series then they should at least be given limits on their access to the primarchs, and nobody outside the core authors should be allowed anywhere near the Emperor.
To me, ADB has set the bar for handling dialogue with the primarchs. His marines feel beyond humanity, and his primarchs feel like the legends that they deserve to be. He also manages this without restricting their participation, as has (wisely) been the default in other books. Dan Abnett and Graham McNeill have also handled their primarchs very well.
I enjoyed his Sundering trilogy, and his recent Eldar novels were not bad, but Deliverance Lost and what I've read of The Lion are awful. I thought the Dark Angel Horus Heresy books were bad but passable, though I understand why many DA fans were upset that other legions got Dan Abnett or ADB and they got stuck with Gav Thorpe. I just don't think he can do space marines (he's not alone - far too many authors just fall into childish super soldier cliches and end up writing utterly unengaging bolter porn). His elves come across as too human and too mundane, but when he writes space marines it really rankles. The problems in Deliverance Lost and The Lion go way beyond that though. The whole goofy Labrynth section, and the nagging feeling that the plot of the Lion was salvaged from an unfilmed episode of Star Trek Voyager that got rejected just point to a lack of interesting ideas. This stuff really should have been rejected at the initial pitching stage.

Big lines especially for signings by Mr. Sanders and Mamzel Cawkwell, which was both heartening to see and deserved, they're getting better and better with each release. Good stuff coming out from both of them too.
Other cool thing of the day was they had a guy from Warhammer World -- James or Jamie IIRC -- who is now enshrined as a prince amongts men forevermore. He has been tasked with sorting out/clearing out the GW archive room and has basically set about this by selling off old stuff at events like this.
There were 5 or 6 copies of "The Lost and the Damned" and 1 copy of "Slaves to darkness" for sale, £30 IIRC, all in pretty much mint condition. As were all the old WFRP, Runequest (!), Golden Heroes, Judge Dread books and supplements as well.
Tons of old catalogues and piles of citadel journals, seemingly loads of issues of the short lived specialist games magazines, all reasonably priced and in good nick.
I, just, managed to talk myself out of buying the Judge Dread RPG and companion book, and instead settled for The Thrud graffik novel, "Blood and Iron" the art of Les Edwards, and the 88, 89 and 1990 Fantasy miniature books which GW released, which collects the Golde Demon entries from those years as well as a good splash of 'eavy metal team stuff as well. A real trip down memeory lane in parts indeed.
He's got other stuff to roll out at later events as he sorts through t'ings. IIRC the next batch is for the Studio Open day later this year... July IIRC, tickets on sale in May I believe.
Few new books and the like announced and, intriguingly, apparently at the BL weekender in November to do with the HH making the leap to a ne form of media, to much delight from the fans.

I remember this mainly as one of teammates opponents was so hungover on Sunday morning he just ran his Tau army forwards towards the Black Templars just so he could get the game over and done with.

I'm going to have to second this. I actually liked Age of Darkness too, but generally speaking he's not an author I'd pay 10 bucks to read--let alone 50 bucks for some limited edition whatever. I tried reading the same book and ended up donating it to the library barely touched.
It's no coincidence that the best BL authors are writers first gamers second.I think that's one of the major issues with the inconsistencies in the stable. Most of the writers who graduated from White dwarf or the dev team just aren't that great as writers. Even Graham McNeill, who has some fantastic ideas, is pretty middle of the road when it comes to the actual craft of writing. I doubt he could have gotten published outside the Black Library. Then there are authors like James Swallow who are fantastic prose stylists who get harshed on for not knowing their fluff well enough or making fluff errors.
So you end up with a publisher producing huge volumes of uneven content and a few star writers who somehow manage to both write well and master the lore of the cannon like Abnett and ADB. In my opinion life is too short to read bad prose, so I am also going to stick to those two and Swallow (dodges thrown stones and rotten vegetables) and maybe McNeill and Kyme on rare occasions.

Subject: Re:Black Library News & Rumours Thread III, that awkward third title.
I just fired off an email to BL to see if they might give some illumination into this. Heres the body of it. I'll post the reply if I ever get one.
I have a question concearning the foil colors on the Horus Heresy series. I have always been under the impression that the first prints were done in gold foil, 2nd print silver and third print was bronze. I recently purchased Deliverance lost about a week or two after it came out and the foil color on it was bronze. All the copies at the book store I purchased it at were likewise bronze, and a random person I saw reading it on my commute one morning again had bronze. In checking the copyright info in it it does appear to be a first print.
Seeing this... does it mean that the Foil color equals print run is not actually the case and if so what is the criteria, or do I have a misprint. The reason I am writing this is because well quite honestly after 19 books including Know No Fear which I picked up 2 days ago, which was gold, this is the only book that is not a gold color foil and kind of breaks the asthetic when they are on my shelf. It sticks out like a sore thumb. I have included some photo links to illustrate my point.
I'm three quarters of the way through know no fear now and had a question for everyone here. I thought some things mentioned in the book didn't come until well after the jersey. In the book they mention storm bolters, whirlwinds, and something else that that slips my mind right now. Am I wrong about the timing, I've read the series and have seen other inconsistencies, just wanted to get your opinions.
