Well since the Last Chaos Space Marine codex release really weakened the CSM army and really hosed it, and when the Space Marine codex came out that it not only made Space Marines better then the new Chaos Space Marines, it made them better then the Old Chaos Space Marines. I fear Loyalist Space Marines a bunch because of all the advantages they have, and their complete lack of disadvantage, at least Loyalist Space Marines are not as broken as the Grey Knights but then no codex has ever or will ever be as broken as a Grey Knight army can be if done up right.

not always under attack from something or other (though a waagh! is coming), hit & run, strength isn't everything, plus you're basically a genetically engineered super-human ninja.
heresy-era, probably the same (though only 3% of us survived, that 3% sat chillin' for a year or so, did a few hit & run attacks on stuff with minimal casualties, but most of is was guard duty while waiting for the apothecaries/techpriests to rebuild the chapter.

During the heresy, yeah, pretty much.
Iron warriors, word bearers and whoever Konrad Curze's legion is shot about 76,000 raven guard in the back, then the remaining 3000 retreated to rebuild the chapter and the alpha legion sabotaged it, but failed to kill the rest of them
