Why are we all talking about how Indian she is when we are ignoring how attractive she is?

Again I'll point out that this competition has been won several times by black women so where is this idea that "white America is being attacked" coming from?

A bunch of people can't tell the difference between Indians and muslims because they're both mostly brown and aren't christian generally, they're ignorant. After 911 there were attacks carried out on Hindu temples because people thought they were mosques. Those attackers show the same indifference to facts as people on this board.

An obvious Indian cultural performance and dress represents the Indian community, it doesn't represent America, that is what some people have complained about. Why couldn't she have chosen something a little less ethnocentric than what she did?

I just wish (and I have no idea but I think I would have heard about it if this happened) that Ms Kansas's special talent would have been butchering a hog or something live on stage in her pageant dress. That would have given those gakkers something to see!

Eh, I'm not particularly keen on hunting myself (though I've nothing against those who are, generally) so the fact that she's really into not only cooking, but killing dinner is something that would be slightly off-putting for me.

Indian immigrants are part of America therefore an Indian dance is representative of America. Having all the contestants sing country or wear puritan dresses looking unhappy would make the pageant even more boring.

I would be off put because I myself don't like killing things. It's nothing more than simple personal preference. Similarly, I would not be incredibly attracted to someone whose primary hobby was throwing wet pasta at the wall and watching it slowly slide down, as that is not something I like to do myself.

Apparently Ms. Kansas there is in the National Guard, not the real Army, which automatically turned me off as I have to assume she is lazy and/or incompetent. So I'm going with the one who won.

No, it's representative of the Indian community, just like irish dancing is representative of the Irish community. For something to represent a nation it needs to be part of the dominant culture or at least home grown. There are plenty of dance styles that would do this. The USA is home to country, jazz, hip hop, swing, rock n roll, and while those are all music styles, they all have distinctive dance styles associated with them.

The dominant culture of the USA above all other nations is to absorb foreign influences into the "melting pot" of common US citizenship while retaining a sense of the individual parent culture. (See Irish-American, Scottish-American, Korean-American, and so on.)

I am noticing that as a trend actually. Models are joining the reserves (I know several female Marine reservists who talk that point up in their modeling profiles A LOT) or national guard... I can't help but feel it is a very calculated career move even if two of the models I'm friends with are both NCOs and reportedly decent enough at what they do... (S4/S1 not like they're gonna break a helo) but it still kinda bothers me.

My reaction when she won was, "she's not that hot" but that was because her jaw was practically on the floor, her eyes wide, she looked like a monster, but during the dance, bikini, and then pics after the fact, I was like, "she is gorgeous."

I saw this young lady on the news this morning and I have to say... she is amazing. That being said I take exception both to the people who have attacked her and to the people who have jumped up to defend India, Indians and her heritage in general. While it is true that India is not a Muslim nation, India has a huge Muslim population. India has fought it's own war on Terror. India has been in a cynical conflict with Pakistan for decades.

While I respect India as a nation I am deeply troubled by their caste based apartheid system where our new Miss America might be "an untouchable" based solely on the color of her skin. Even worse than being an untouchable in India is being a "ferengi" derogatory for "Christian" or being a Muslim in India. If you are a minority in India you live under state sponsored persecution. It is timely that this woman is Miss America with her message of cultural awareness. I hope she has the temerity and courage to speak up about Indian apartheid and the governments brutal treatment of it's own citizens. – off of the soapbox.

Why? She's an American, India is in her heritage certainly but she may have no more care about whatever the realities of India is than the 4 bazillion Americans that claim to be Irish might have about Ireland.

I wish she hadn't done the bollywood dance because I think bollywood dancing is uninteresting. I also think ballroom dancing is uninteresting. When the wife and I watch So you Think you Can Dance, the two most skipped dance types for us are Bollywood and Ballroom. Solo tap is third.

Weird cause Bollywood is awesome.

The melting pot originally referred to European immigrants being absorbed into an everyman generic American rather than clinging to the ancestral cultures of Europe. The term was coined when immigration was restricted to white people, it was being used by the late 18th century when slavery was in full swing so did not have anything to do with mixing various races. The current meaning didn't start coming into use until Blue Mink put out their 'Melting Pot' song which did badly in the US when it first came out in 1969.
Multi-culturalists prefer the term salad bowl as melting pot has the concept of destroying all unique cultures to produce one universal one.

The girl's act though was pure indian in nature, no sign of Indian aspects being absorbed into a wider American one.

Blue grass, old timey, comes from the folk tradtion of the British Isles, much like "Black" gospel music is from Scottish origins (along with the klan). But country/western music is not British, it includes elements of European folk music too and the banjo is of African origin. The point is, is that the style has been around long enough to become a part of Americana, it's changed from its original. A lot of those "Irish" that settled in Appalachia and the south were actually Scots. Easy way to tell is the real Irish tend to be catholic while the Scots Irish (who originally came from Scotland hence the name) are protestant.

I imagine this is probably the most people have talked about Miss America in 20 years, at least.

Next year I wouldn't be surprised if the contest organizer runs out mid-acceptance speech dressed as Hitler and then punches the runner-up.
