I think we need to cull some of the inappropriate comments regarding this horrible tragedy. Making fun of furries is a behaviour that should be neutered before it can multiply. I only hope that this thread isn't put down because of this.

Furries are fun to make fun of and so on but ultimately this is an act of domestic terrorism and someone should be going to a federal prison for a long time.

I'm not sure I would throw this into the terrorism grouping. Generally domestic terrorists are out to make a statement of some type and targets and methods of attack are chosen to help make that statement, be it blowing up a federal building, an abortion clinic, shooting up a building full of deploying troops or a bunch of CIA analysts on their way to work, blowing up mass transit systems or gas guzzling SUVs.

This, especially if done by one of the con attendees into that lifestyle, seems more of a lashing out due to being butt hurt over something, kind of a tantrum. It just doesn't seem like a terrorist act to me.

A serious act? Yep. One for which the perp(s) should do some real time? Heck yes. But domestic terrorism? I don't see it that way.

Allot of this thread indulges in victim blaming.

That furries may or may not indulge in something people may find distasteful is neither here nor there. They are all adults and are breaking no laws.

The person behind this has commit an act of attempted mass murder and needs to spend a very long time in jail.

Nope, its definitely Terrorism.

The point of an act of terror is to make a point, but that point doesn't always mean the target has to be special. A large group of people is all that is necessary. Just look at the Boston Marathon. The target wasn't the Marathon itself, it was the large group of people. The Tsarneav's weren't making a statement about marathons, they were trying to hurt and kill a lot of people.

But the Tsarneavs were trying to make a statement (Kill the Infidels of the Great Satan or whatever). We don't what the intent of this was. Again, if it was a con attendee lashing out for some perceived slight or something, I just don't see this as meeting the definition of 'domestic terrorism:

Involve acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law;
- Appear intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination. or kidnapping;

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/terrorism/terrorism-definition

Just like some emo kid flipping out and shooting up his school as part of some suicide doesn't meet the definition.

The use of gas is the game changer here. That's the use of a WMD.

I suspect throwing a glass jar of Clorox isn't going to meet the WMD definition, and I suspect when it is all said and done, that is about what happened. And regardless, intent is a KEY element if any prosecutor wants to run with domestic terrorism charges. A WMD charge is likely going to be a stretch, but even if they go with it, that does not automatically get a domestic terror charge.

Edit, appears it was pool chlorine (powdered).

it seems like a silly mistake. though is powdered chlorine able to become gassius enough to hospitalize people?

If Chlorine gas was released it totally qualifies as use of a WMD. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2332a

There is of course the chance they wouldn't pursue WMD charges, but given how serious we're taking acts of Terror these days...

If I fill a jar full of powdered chlorine intended for pool use and throw it in a poorly ventilated stairwell, the fumes will annoy folks, some considerably. I have two types at the house, one for disinfecting/cleaning the home brewing kit, one for the daughters pool. The pool stuff is a bit stronger, and if you inhale it deeply it doesn't feel too good. I suspect the folks taken to the hospital (seems to be 19) were not significantly injured in any lasting way. Anyone actually treated probably had other health issues which exacerbated the effects of the chlorine. First responders are gonna ask about symptoms, and if you reply in the positive are gonna want to give you an ambulance ride.

Any attempt at a WMD charge will likely be used to coerce a plea deal.

It was in a glass jar? i must of missed that some where.

I was kinda getting at that maybe a janitor in the stairwell accidentally bumped over a box o pool cleaner or something from his cart or some flavor of that.

Unless you actually use a chemical to release the Chlorine, just tossing powdered Chlorine in a stairwell is only going to be dangerous to people who already have respiratory problems.

The fact so many people were injured suggests it was treated to release the gas.

They didn't say it was in a jar, they said it was thought it may be intentional. You could be right and it could have been a spill.

That wouldn't have done anything beyond annoy people or cause someone with Asthma to have an episode. It wouldn't send healthy people to the hospital.

I don't think any 'gas' was released, all I've seen (after the initial report) just calls it fumes from powdered chlorine. I also don't think anyone was really injured, I think 19 folks were taken to the hospital because the expressed some indicator of symptoms and the EMTs play it safe, and once at the hospital they are gonna check and treat because that is how they grab insurance money. Nothing I read has anyone still in the hospital. I may be overly cynical, but no one was really hurt in this case as far as I've seen at this point.

Thats what was probably used.

If you treat pool Chlorine(any pool chlorine) with certain chemicals it will release Chlorine gas. Pool Chlorine also will naturally degrade over time slowly releasing the gas, thats why it smells. At that level its not deadly(except to people with respiratory problems) but if its actively released its a very dangerous poison.

Maybe he bumped over a bottle of bleach with it then (err ammonia. i forget which was which part.)

Edit: It was Bleach + Ammonia.... thank you peggy hill.

Also apparently you are not supposed to mix muriadic acid or something which is also a pool cleaner :/

I don't remember what chemicals can cause the release of Chlorine. So maybe. But I seem to remember it was something different.
