With the melee combat, you get a translucent part of the bar and solid, bright green portion in the dead centre, which represents a critical hit. The Gauntlet changes the entire hit box into critical territory. In other words, same chance to hit, but higher damage and guarenteed critical hit with slow motion badassery.
Honestly, having played a few rounds of multiplayer, its interesting but flawed. There are numerous neutral enemies you have to destroy to build up a meter and whoever gets the biggest bar gets to charge first. First charge is like a joust, very quick and small hitbox, prone to lag. Then another 2 rounds of jousting, similarly, then a stand and fight, which is again, small hitbox and laggy, easy to get screwed over. It seems to be all about the melee here. You can shoot the opponent and do a little damage, but your carapace weapon is automated and targets the Orks/Chaos first, your Stubber does little, your meltagun not much better, the Gatling Cannon does nothing to armour. The Thermal Cannon does damage but not a whole lot, and shooting at the Knight means you get hit with the charge, which does more damage that shooting.
All in all, decent idea but poorly implemented. Also, its just another currency system to grind and farm, to buy "Flaming" weapons which are weaker than anything you already have if you've played for more than a month like myself.
