I was excited for the new K47 but it went over like a fart in church; most of us liked the idea of mostly using our bolt action armies with a smattering of "weird" tech, and they changed it in true ex-GW style to push the new stuff and nerf using mostly Bolt Action stuff.

Completely killed interest in it; my store is still sitting on product from the first wave.

Its very difficult to get an overall impression of how well a game is doing from anecdotal evidence. I've seen the exact opposite - lots of gaming groups & SM getting very excited about the game, the setting, the miniatures and the fact that Warlord seems to be pushing some serious resources behind it (at least, this is the impression I have got from listening to podcasts on the topic).
The fact that you can use a BA army means the buy-in is very easy for that group - I don't collect BA but my gaming group and I are doing a mix of BA and K47 units. My own impression is thats expensive for a Warlord game, vastly cheaper than the last game I was collecting for (Heresy). Although I appreciate it is going to be expensive for those coming from just a historicals background.

Stores will generally have some stock that they are 'sitting on', as otherwise they can't sell any more? GW have spun the FOMO/limited edition sets but its very difficult for other companies, especially those 5% the size of them, to operate in that manner (I also think its pretty crappy/stressful as a customer of those products).

Surely if that's most of your community, you can either houserule, gentleman's agreement or just play with one another using minimal Weird War tech?

Besides, it sounds like if your store just wanted to be using mostly Bolt Action armies, that K47 stock would be gathering dust anyway.

I'd say K47 is pretty popular in my area and folk have been wondering about tournaments being set up eventually.

I was entirely willing to get the new edition (and I still might) if there was interest but that was roughly my group's response as well.

We haven't played the new version, so maybe the Rift Dice are the amazing mechanic we didn't know we needed and perhaps the boost to weird units really is balanced vs non-weird.

However, -and it's a minor thing- something about having to drop another 30 bucks (on top of the rulebook) on another set of special dice to enable what looked like a sidelining of non-weird units (we all have alot of those as well), just seemed to turn folks off. Note that this is a group of whom over half of them already have significant investment in WWW2 armies and played the previous version of K47, so you'd think this would be a shoe-in. Yet, WWW2 is a sideline for us and the general feeling seemed to be a preference to just use the OPR rules that most of us have become so fond of.

All that said, I do wish Warlord the best as they clearly are giving the full court press to K47 in terms of quality releases and support. Even if some of their methods and pricing are reminiscent of GW, this is still a game that is significantly more affordable than 40k and not at all derivative.

Additional question.

What's the difference between Field Manual and Rulebook?

Do you need the Rulebook if you have the Field Manual?

You do not have to use or purchase special rift dice, just use standard D6.

1/2 =Exhausted
3/4= Active
5/6 = Surging.

The field manual has just enough information for you to play the contents of the Introductory Set. There are no actual rules in it, just like everyone hits on 4s, US save on 6+, Axis save on a 5+, cover saves are introduced but that is as cruncchy as it gets.

Basically it's perfect for people completely new to miniature gaming. If they had pre-coloured single piece/snap fit minis it would be a solid 10/10 starter product.

I'm really encouraged that Warlord are committing to the background writing for the game; Gav Thorpe & William King amongst others. I don't know if any of those guys helped write the background in Festung Europa? (I am still waiting for my FLGS to get the copy of that).

I'm putting some time aside this week to catch up on the K47 background. Hoping for lots of body horror and Cthulu-Mythos-adjacent shenanagans.
