We'll find out soon enough eh.

Also a total bloody cop out. A clearly presented list available at all times as a simple webpage is infinitely superior to a fragmented list you have to get through a login screen(and then find) to look at. Not to mention that pretty much nobody sane wants *more* email marketing spam.

Every day BL make it easier to not give them any money.

They seem to be making a lot of odd decisions lately about making news harder to get from them...this, and cancelling the digital edition of White Dwarf, when print is dying for magazines in general. If my only options are subscribe or go without, see ya

Can anyone clear up my confusion regarding the end of the heresy/beginning of the siege for me? so the synopsis for solar war is that horus has to break into the sol system, yet in praetorian of Dorn, the alpha legion are already assaulting the sol system, and then the synopsis for slaves to darkness says that the traitors are readying to attack terra, and mortarion is sent ahead. setting up for the plot of buried dagger. so if those things have already happened, is the solar war not a step backwards?

Just want to clear things up before I decide which books to move onto next.

Solar war very much deals with the arrival of the chaos fleet in "our" system.

Mortarion was sent ahead...

Whilst I am very happy that GW is selling five expensive hardbacks of a book series they've spent the past 6 centuries trying not to finish, is there a way to just buy all the Horus Heresy books these days?

Praetorian of Dorn has Dorn and the Fists repelling the Alpha Legion attack. Slaves to Darkness is the Sons of Horus trying to bring the Traitor Legions back together to begin the attack on Terra, as they’ve all sort of scattered all over the place. At the end, Horus is given intelligence which the Alpha Legion obtained in their attack on the Sol System. Solar War is the beginning of the actual siege, and focuses on the traitor Legions actually getting their fleets into the solar system and towards Terra.

So before that they hadn't actually advanced into the solar system? So we're the alpha legion attacking pluto or something?

Yeah, some small groups had infiltrated Terra but most of the fighting was around Pluto from what I remember.

I've never once read a Black Library book, but I have to say, the Vox Cast interview with Abnett really impressed me. I really want to read a Dan Abnett 40k book now. I tried to read Horus Rising a while ago as my first introduction to 40k, and was instantly confused by just about everything. I'm a bit more familiar with the broad strokes of space marines now, but I'm wondering if maybe something like Eisenhorn or Gaunt's Ghost wouldn't still be better? From the interview, the Eisenhorn series particularly sounded interesting.

Eisenhorn is a good starting point, it's an excellent trilogy that deals less with open war and more with conspiracies lurking in Imperial society, while still being damned good space opera.

Ditto on Gaunt's Ghosts, which especially with the first few novels may come across as a bit dated, but as Dan said, introduces a lot of terms and words that have been adopted by the hobby over time.

His Brothers of the Snake is a good Space Marine novel by the way, they started out as a pair of short stories, but it evolved into something really good. A good entry level novel that also has a great story dedicated to people seeing and interacting with space marines for the first time.

Well if Dan really is planning to eventually do more Gaunt's Ghosts, sequels to Titanicus and Double Eagle, and maybe even the Unification Wars(!), that makes me feel really positive that regardless of other things there's going to be stuff for me to enjoy in 40K going forward.

A good interview, up there with the Jes one.

I haven't read ghosts, but I loved the Eisenhorn series. Ravenor is a great spin off serie to Eisenhorn if you want to read more about the inquisition

Dan Abnett's writing has been one of the best parts of my experience in the 40K hobby. I always look forward to his next work, even if I don't always enjoy each book as much as I'd hoped. Horus Rising was the first time I was legitimately disappointed in an Abnett novel. Without being able to define quite what I mean, it was the first of his works that didn't have the "feel" I'd come to expect of a Dan Abnett piece set in 40K.

Dan made a great point about George Lucas's failure in the prequels to live up to the awe and mystery of the idea of the Clone War. In the same way, I think the writers of the Black Library have failed to capture that same quality in their Horus Heresy series, Abnett included. I'm not as excited as I'd like to be then when Dan says he'd really like to tackle the Unification Wars.

I think the greatest difference between Dan's work in the Horus Heresy and his other writings is the fact that his other works are stand-alone. Even when he's written a series such as Gaunt's Ghosts, the work has effectively been a stand-alone piece, the self-contained artifice of a singular author. If Dan is the sole writer responsible for a future Unification War series, then I'm excited to see it. if it is written in the same way as has been the Horus Heresy series, I'm not sure I'll make time to read it.

All that said, I am looking forward to sequels to Titanicus and Double Eagle, as those are his novels I've most enjoyed.

So, speaking of the new Horror line (and keeping things spoiler free or else.. ), has anyone else already dug into the novels and / or audio drama?

Working my way through Maledictions myself and it's a bit of a mixed bag, with some stories having great twists, while others are just "meh". Personal favourites so far are No Good Deed, Last of the Blood and Triggers.

The audio drama on the other hand.. all round awesome!

In all my years of listening to the film review show I never realised that Mark Kermode's friend was the same Kim Newman who wrote warhammer novels. It is weird to see my interests overlap like that.
