Alright, so i leave for singapore in like an hour...so what better to do than upload a bunch of pics of the FINISHED prize trooper for my man Minus. The base is somewhat close to the way minus does it, and i added a little bit of gems to tie it into the minis story...Pretty good I absolutely hate these photographs as the iphone can only do so much. Super pixelated...ugh...i REALLY NEED TO INVEST IN A REAL CA,MERA... (there are a few spots where light gets in the way of blending but theres nothing i can do about it right now). Im hoping Minus will shoot some pics for me when he gets his prize, as hes definitely alot better at taking photos than myself And has a nice camera i think
Anyways, i mean...youve basically seen this already...but here he is DONE. Maybe a touchup here and there when i get back and extra glaze maybe...at this point....not really much will change its course i really do hope you guys like this one. He was my favorite to paint and i think my best work. Here is Sgt Hugo! to; Minus, from Bebop!

The weathering on that shoulder is inspiring... almost makes me ashamed of the sloppy dabs of rust-color I splotch on my own IG armor.

Would have liked to see more of that weathering on the chest pieces, too. The gem effect is neat but the weathering looks so darn good.

I don't have a nice camera. My fiancée does. And 'cause she's wondeful she let's me borrow it every time I need.

And yes I will.
I'll do a photo of your mini beside mine.

Interesting name.

I'm happy that you enjoyed painting him. I love the result, and I'm eagger to see it for real.
I really like the big pink crystal on the base. Is this some sort of sprue that you've cut down to a crystal like shape ?

Thanks very much you guys! I'm thrilled that you fellas like the finished product. You must know that all you guys inspire me!

Pekel: thanks dude I agree, I too like the pink weathering alot. It's much easier to do than you might think and never be ashamed of your work. It's brilliant. My concern with the finished product was that the gem effect is too close to the carapace armor. But meh, it's too late now!! :p

Nerd: I hope you know that feeling is mutual! Just looking at your work gives me the painting itch! Super happy that you dig it

Dr H: Thanks man I always value your insight and you've saved my butt more than once I think

Minus: yes the crystal is just clipped spruce shaved off in random sharp edges. Took 10 seconds to make the bit, considerably longer to paint it. Lol. I think it came out well! I just googled so images found my favorite and essentially tried to copy it hell be in your hands within a few weeks!

And now...Singapore!

Cam thanks Most certainly having a time in singapore except that the time difference from nyc is 12 hours so jet lag is pretty brutal. I think i want to paint another Sgt in your orca trooper scheme...if you wouldnt mind that is of course

Man that is impressive. So many well-executed techniques! I have to say the face is the best part of this mini for me, the skin tone and stubble is brilliant.

Thanks so much fellas definitely worked out some kinks in painting certain stranger effects on this one. The face painted itself. It's just a dynamic sculpt and was easy to paint after painting 135 catachan heads. That's where I learned to paint heads and skin. On subpar catachan sculpts lol

Hey guys! Happy weekends and all that from sunny Los Angeles! Ahh good to be home
So, within the week ive decided to start up an army that i can actually finish within a few months. This means quite a bit in terms of painting, because i tend to be an exruciatingly slow painter as well as a perfectionist. But THIS time, i aim to find that balance of speed vs overall. The army that ive decided to do is a Space Sharks Marine army. I love the idea of boring, grey, standard issue, marines and the space sharks have a great icon as well. Strangely enough, Nerdfest has been put to a similar task!! His blog is here and you can see the wonderful work hes already gotten into!
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/4440/356350.page

Hes using the new updated Charcaradons Astra color scheme. While me, im going for the old boring, all grey one. This is in part because i need to literally ignore every desire i have to osl this, nmm that, wet blend this...etc etc. Each mini MUST be finished in under 4 hours. Thats my goal. Each marine, characters withstanding, must take under 4 hours to accomplish.

So this is the test mini. There a few things i can do better on the next ones, but its good so far. Ive followed the colors scheme according to the codex spot on so thats all set. Ive gone with a pretty jacked up weathered marine look because its the only way i can accomplish a pretty stylized mini without taking too long. You may think its overdone...it may be...maybe not...but the thing is gotta just get close enough to what i like a move on. Anyways...minus the chapter icon which i need to FW order, which i will...heres the test mini for my Space Sharks Chapter. Paintime...3hrs 40 minutes.

Anyways, would love to know what you guys think!! My first marine so it can only get better!
Cheers
BB

OH-I Wanna get out of here

Looks good! I think it might be a bit to simple, but that's the old school scheme, so you know. I do think the green rim is a disservice to the rest, even if old school.

Looks good! I have question, how is the best way to ship/weather red? I have some DE vehicles that I want to have that speed worn chipped look.

I know you and some other brilliant fellas like Damos and Minus should be able to help.

Thanks in advance!

mate, he's looking really good. i totally salute your ambition to keep each figure to <4 hrs - i know there is no way i could do that!

really like the grey you've used and the red stripe pops nicely. . one thought though - 30 of those guys is going to look a bit flat. have you considered maybe throwing in a darker grey shoulder or knee pad? just to give some variation in the pallete? im thinking something like:

@ Snrub: Thanks dude. Yeah, and all of a sudden theres like 6!! SS threads going on. I sure picked a goodtime to be "unique"
@ 360: Yup, it certainly tis pretty boring in terms of color. Honestly, i like it. i like that they arent so over the top with the color scheme. Its one reason ive steered clear of SMs for a while is that i just find most of the visual design to be ridiculous. And the green base?? You dont like it? I think it compliments the color scheme really quite nicely. Im going to leave it green
@ Red: Its quite easy. I use a sponge to dab a dried mix of 60/40 brown/black, onto somewhat random but mostly focusing on edges. Then i go back with brush + same mix and help out the weathering by adding stronger more defined scraps and etc etc...then rehighlight ad nauseum the bottom edge of the "chips" with my highlight color. Ill use a slightly darker edge highlight for the chips that fall under shadow. And basically white (since its grey...maybe for red id use a flesh color+orange+white) for the chips in direct light. Hope that helps mate!
@San: Thats the new Charcaradon scheme. Nerdie is working on that right now on his thread. I agree its a very cool scheme, but much more baroque than this one here, wjich is why i think ill stick with the all grey. Yes, i agree its a bit boring, but there will be iconography on the minis, and also some packs of brown and plasma etc...im not too worried about it looking flat. (i hope lol)
@ Nerd: Too kind bro, too kind. And not even true. But, i do like how its turned out! I had to kind of abandon what i normally would want to do because id want to take too long blending things. Youve got these down to a science, im still bumping into the wall Dialing it in....

and speaking of dialing it in...nice segue i know....heres another guy down. THIS one was finished in under 3 hours. Wow!! I encountered a new problem though and i over airbrushed his basecoats and he started out slightly lighter than the first. So a bunch of glazes of brackish water brought him back to a nastier grey. Not "perfect and what i will do now is airbrush them in bulk so they are all the same basecoat. Also i like the more aggressive chipping on the first. But whatever, its close enough and stilll with that...under 3 hours. AWESOME!! I could finish 2 a day and have a squad in a week!!!! Heres the 2nd speed painted marine!

Still don't like the green rim

You need more movement in the poses. Looks like the first guy is telling a story about this fish he caught, it was *this big* and the second guy casually hanging out.
