Good 'cron.

Yeah, keep it a dark brass for the axe as you don't want it drawing attention away from the rest of him by being too eye-catching.

That and it matches to general profile of forgeworld's malcadors.

One thing that is missing is more crew hatches for escaping etc. Ah well adds to the grimdark.

I've had a go at a test for the Necron scheme on a warrior, all that's really missing is to paint the axe blade on the weapon, which might be a warm but muted brass / gold.

Cheers all.

Tanks are great- you've always got a good hand for clean, tight cuts! I like the necron paint scheme also.

White is such a brutal color for me to work with, yours is so clean and sharp. Perfectly contrasts the darker shades, too.

Thank you all.

Agreed Skalk white is a pain, the trick is not to paint white

Small Terrain shaped update.

Been slowly working on a big building for a while. Drew up the floor plan and put some walls together. Naturally I would start making a ruin using the CoD kits just as they pull them from production.... Still I bought some years ago and have had them lying around since collecting dust so I thought I'd better put them to some use. Alas it's a ruin because I have no other choice with these kits.

Anyway.
Floor plan for the building

It's split into two sections for ease of building, can be put together to go on the edge of a board or split in two to full corners. I've made the corridor on the right wider since takign these images this. I have also left space for pavement around the edge of the building, which will be made to match my bases. The base is made from 3mm foamed PVC. Ridged, cuts like a dream and doesn't warp (hallelujah).

The general lack of interior walls in buildings bugs me, so lets make some:

This is made from a core of 2mm foamed PVC with two 1mm sheets laminated either side with the pattern cut in. Its almost a shame that i'll be destroying most of it.

Many moons ago I started on a tank wreck, time to do some more on that.

The sand bags are made with a mix of greenstuff and miliput, rolled into a long sausage then cut into segments before flattening and putting them into place really simple and a great way of using up old putty that is starting to go past it's best.

It's been a month now since I did anything on the tanks, so I should probably make that other side ...

Cheers all

The material I am using is PALight, that you recommended to me a while back, Flinty.

I "may" be cheating, I sketch everything out in CAD and while I could draw it all out and cut it myself, I'm far to lazy so I use a silhouette portrait cutter (it's the cheapest one and has a quite small cutting area which does pose a challenge at times). It doesn't cut through anything thicker than about 0.3 - 0.4mm, just plots out where I have to go along with the knife.

I only use it for more complicated pieces like all these arches.

Quickly got some paint on the tank wreck:

All quick & dirty airbrush so far + some heavy duty application of chipping medium. The rest is more or less brush & sponge work now.

and to prove I'm still painting other projects:

The contemptors are finally ready for their decals, these were all in pieces until last night.

Also the first batch of plague marines are getting some paint, I'm not sure about the orange eyes atm.

Thanks all.

First Death guard squad is done now, I'm not exactly sure if I'll go back and touch anything up, but I don't particularly want to do any more on them for now.

I tried to go a little easier on the corrosion on these, went a little OTT on the previous models, I blame that on them being so busy with lots of broken armour pieces, where as this method seems to be more effective on pieces that are less cluttered.

Some WIP's of the shoulder pads for the second squad, they are all in bits atm these are the only pieces I've done any conversion work on. The spikes on the previous squads armour are just made from carving some milliput & greenstuff blend rolled into long thin sausages and left to set, before cutting pices off, sharpening one end and making a hole in the armour where it'll go. then glue into position and shape some greenstuff around it to make look like it's burst through the armour.

Hilariously I actually did all this sculpting before the dark imperium box was announced ...

As we should all know by now there next round of the LoER terrain competition is now on, so I've decided to jump in, with a bunker...

Pretty simple boxy design, detailing etc to add next. It's build from 2mm (vertical sections) and 3mm (horizontal pieces) foamed PVC. If it works out I might make two more, one chaosified and another ruined, we'll see if I have enough material after I finish some other projects that I've got slated though.

@Doc: Thanks, I'm glad I had the time and inclination to actually sit down and get some paint on it.

@btoliver311: Yea that, nuts there mate. If you don't mind me saying so. Thanks for the compliment anyway.

The siegetower reminds me of some of Blanche's artworks from back in the mid 90's.

Proof of life:

A little while a go Warlord had a 3 for 2 sale on plastic sprues + free p&p for orders over £10. So I picked up 3 sprues of winter soviet infantry (24 models) So I've been searching for some weapons and other bits to customise them. Here's what I've come up with using heads, shouder pads and weapons/ arms from anvil, plus a DKoK lasgun and a bren gun from Victoria Miniatures.

With my order from Anvil I picked up some torso's and legs for a skitarii conversion I saw a while ago, using some spare heads and arms. Really love the look of these.

Just thought these were cool little conversions that I'd like to share.

I am working on the second squad of plague bearers, honest.

Hot weather seems to be putting me off modelling, or at least painting. I'll try and paint a test scheme on one of the skitarii and troopers after.

Cheers all.

Nice infantry , I've been playing around with bits from the skitari set and Anvil stuff too, it goes together really well.

As far as painting goes I'm blaming the weather too !

So... Necrons

The lord has some colour now

There is only so much black you can highlight before you get fed up. The paint job is really rough in places here.

An earlier WIP is spoiler'ed below:
Spoiler:

The Warriors are finished here is my favourite

Scarabs are finished too.

I'll get a group shot of them together at some point, Just the lightning effects on the warrior's would get lost in any more zoomed out photos that I'd take.

All the glowy bits on these are painted with VGC Jade Green and VMC Off White.

The immortals are being worked on, despite starting them first I've left them until now, just need to work out how much of the black that I can highlight using an airbrush without ruining them. At the same time I'm working on the Triarch stalker, here is a little WIP of that monsterous pain in the backside:

Bits that are brown will be painted in the same badly executed warm brass seen on the other models, I'm using it to denote 'elite-ness' in the army

Plague marines are coming along as well, I've got some paint on them now but here is a WIP of some. All I've really done is carve away parts of the armour then made round censor like parts using a milliput / greenstuff mix rolled into balls and left to set, then cut in half spheres, before gluing into place and (not so) carefully drilling holes into them using a fine drill bit. Before applying some fresh greenstuff around the pieces and sculpting it to roughly look like they have forced their way out of the armour.

I have too much junk around here:

If any one has any tips on rusting up this pile of junk in the quickest, dirty-est and effective way possible i'd love to hear from you.

Hopefully this update will make up for me having gone so long without posting, I'll try and get some more regular updates up from now on.

I promise more terrain next time!

OMN.

Nice Necrons, OMN! I'm catching a 'Warhammer 40k meets Star Wars' vibe off the color scheme- very well done whites and blacks.

Not sure about 'fast' weathering/rusting- the phrase in business is 'you can have your (fill in the blank) fast, cheap and good- pick any two". Monkeytroll and Cam do excellent rust, as does Doc H and others. I tried a 'study in rust' that wasn't terribly time consuming, but there are things I'd do differently.

Essentially, I hit the whole pile of scrap with a nice, dirty brown/earthy base color, then used a heavy handed 'drybrush' of Vallejo Rust Wash and then picked out individual strategic pieces in other colors- brass, bronze, copper- things that don't oxidize the same as steel/iron. I tried to grind some chalks for contrasting color, but it didn't work so well. I like the overall piece, nice little bit of cover and a decent paint job, but you'd have to check the picks in my gallery and see if that's anything like what you're trying for.

Good to see you posting!

Lovely.work on the Necrons.

I did this with a grey base then hit different bits with nuln oil and the Brown wash who's name I forget. Then heavy drybrush with a couple.of shades of grey and Brown before picking specific bits out in rust (vermin fur, washed with nuln oil and slightly highlighted with a bright orange) and mettalics. I think to get a good mixed up jumble 8f stuff eff3ct you need to use lots of different layers of different mucky colours. You end up with a grey/Brown, but an interesting ever changing grey Brown melange.

Loving that scythe.

Too long since I did any real painting to recall any recipes to be honest.

A base of browns and blacks and maybe some dirty reds, drybrushed in metallics then sponged with oranges and light browns.

Powders would be good for this too, use your favourite method for quick metals, then play with a couple of rust powders - but only quick of you actually have powders already.......

Not particularly useful I'm afraid.......

Thanks for the tips all, I'm taking them all on board.

@Meer_Cat: Thank you, lol yea I'm starting to think that's a fundamental law.

@ Flinty: Thanks! That's cool, I really want to pinch that idea for .. whatever that is you posted (bin? bunker?).

@Johnny: Cheers mate.

@MT: No, no that useful to me. I'm hunting for new methods to try so it's all good I do have powders and yea, they are quite effective but it doesn't seem worth using them on a piece of terrain like this.

Sponge, washes, airbrush some base colours. I can see something coming together.

OFC the LoER provides a great source of inspiration in a time of need as Meade's Entry to the 3rd League terrain competition.
Spoiler:

]

If I can achieve just a fraction of that, I will be very happy.

Just started getting some colour on it the other day, a quick spray of hull red followed by "rust" over black primer.

Right, so I promised more terrain.

First up the bunker is ready to paint at long last.

GW's latest 40k terrain is very nicely designed unlike the old CoD sets which are a pain to assemble, these seem quite nice, although its going to require a lot of walls to make a building big enough to fit a staircase in... Just made the statues for now and some of the walls. I'll have to clear all the WIP things off my desk before I do some more on them however.

An update on the large-ish building that I'm working on. The Interior walls are finished, pavement and curb is done so the exterior walls are now in place.

Pavement:

At least I know how it'll be painted:

Plenty of ventilation:

I have a couple of the damaged wall sections left over that I will be breaking up to make rubble to which I will be adding sections of the 1st floor when I make the floor and interior walls for that.

It's pretty roomy inside, should allow for some interesting fights.

Cheers all;
OMN
