None of the 3 houses we looked at last night were what we are looking for. I hate going right after work too, because everyone is hungry and gets cranky, and it's a struggle just to walk through a dang house! I am going to insist we have time to eat first from now on!
All of the houses were over-priced for the size. That is a big problem in this town. It's a college town, and a "desirable" place to live, so everything is way out of whack!
There is one place we looked at a couple of weeks ago that is expensive, but is HUGE! 3 times the size of our current house, 2 car garage, AND TWO rooms for me! And it has a pool! Which is a plus and a negative with kids around...
We need to sell our house first, or at least get an offer on it to have more leverage with that house though.
Anyway, the mold came out great, it should have with 12 hours in the pressure pot. ('Doh! I forgot to take a picture of it! Sorry Dave!)
And the backwards writing worked pretty well too.
The casting however, worked just ok. The face came out just fine, but the head was hollow. So I will need to fill it in with GS to be able to sculpt hair on it. Not a problem.
The picture is dark, just to be able to see any detail. I'll paint it gray later so the detail will come out better.
The second one I did was even worse, so I need to make some changes to my system so the air bubbles can get out. Right now I use the quick set resin that comes with the Smooth-On starter kit, and the pot life (time you have to pour it) is really short, so there just doesn't seem to be time to get it in the mold and in the pot before it's too late. Although, to be honest, I haven't tried to put the resin in the pot yet, so I don't know for sure. The pressure pot is in the basement, and a pain in the rear to get down there just to cast a few bits of resin. So next time, I will do it, just to see if it improves things.
I want to order some slow-set resin, but it will have to wait a bit until I get a few more things sold. The wife doesn't like to let me spend OUR money on MY projects, so I have to fund everything with my sales. It makes sense, it's just inconvienient.
Well, I only had limited time last night, so not much to show. More later!
Thanks for looking,
RSJake
Hmm I'll have a look at my supplies. I think I got a "starter" size of the slower resin. (I live about 20mins from a smooth-on distributor) If I do I'll send it along as I am not going to use it any time soon and I feel bad about not sending along the Old IG weapons info (that I FINALLY found about a week ago.) Flat rate USPS boxes/envelopes are wonderful things

OK, I don't think I'll go the penis pump route. Even the expensive Vacuums will have to wait a long time before I can afford them. The syringe idea though...I had thought about just a while back, but I thought I would need to invest in boxes of syringes to do it, but the guy in that video said you could just chip it out. So, I tried it this weekend. I had a couple of extra syringes laying around from children's medicines, so I used one of those.
It worked great! I still am getting the same problem of only a partial head on the female, but I tried several other molds that had been giving me trouble, and it worked great! Thanks Ish!
Also, if you pull the plunger of the syring all the way to the back of the syringe and let the resin flow down to it once the resin cures, but before it gets completely hard, just take the plunger out, and grab the resin with some pliers, and it pops right out!
I am still going to try the slower set resin too, because getting everything in the pressure pot in time is still a concern. I don't have to be rushing just to fill several molds and get them in the pot in under 3 or minutes.
Galorn, if you do find that resin, I would love to have it! Just let me know how much you want for it. It would be cool to live that close to a Smooth-On! I heard from wehrkind that they have all sorts of cool things they cast in resin in the showroom! I actually have a "built-in" china cabinet at home that is missing one of the drawer pulls, and I have been thinking of casting one of them, and paint it up to look the same, and see if it works.
(at least until we sell the house)
Anyway, speaking of resin, I got a package in the mail Saturday! Full of resin-y goodness! One of the things in the box was the first cast of the Weapons sprue! Yay! It's hard to see, darn resin isn't photogenic. But you can sort of see what's going on there.
They really came out looking great! I'll get them painted up sometime in the next week I hope, and you'll be able to see them better.
Thanks everyone for the tips on casting. Bob knows I need it.
I did get one head sculpted with hair and a bionic eye, but I'm not going to show it until I have several done, and we'll see which one the client likes better.
Thanks for looking,
RSJake

Glad to hear the syringe idea worked! I have a few from when our late cat needed pain meds after dental work. (Yea... that was a bit of a pain...) I had wondered if the resin would wreck the syringes each time, but now I will have to try it! It should be a big help on some of the smaller things like these riffles that sometimes get tiny bubbles just due to being small enough to catch them.
In the future too, I will try and send you examples that have a little dye in the resin. A touch of brown or grey really makes them stand out, but I hadn't thought to cast any like that. Next time Gadget! NEXT TIME!

Don't they usually spin resin in some sort of autoclave to get it into all the nooks and crannies of the molds?

That's one way to do it, yea. You can also do pressure casting where you have a chamber you crank up to 40-60 psi and just squish the hell out of any bubbles. That is a lot easier to do for home casting, and really works about as well. I find my results are better than Finecast, for example, though who knows what sorts of monkeys GW has doing their stuff.
The trouble one always seems to get on really small parts though is that even small bubbles can block a very thin passage, or get stuck, just due to viscosity and friction. Good sprue design can get around that, but sometimes a piece just is going to have issues no matter what.

Speaking of resin dye, I have some on order that will hopefully get here by tonight, along with some modeling clay. I want to try out the true 2-part mold, and see how that works. I have my "Skull helmet Captains head" all sprued up on a production mold to get 5 in one go, and if they are succesful, I'll get to selling them on my webstore and ebay. I also have the other two skull helmets ready for single molds, that I will hopefully get to tonight or this week some time.
I really need to just go to the basement when I am ready to do resin and pop them in the pressure pot. But I am usually doing the casting while I am watching the kids, and need to be available, and going to the basement means I'm not able to hear the kids. Well, we'll see if they go to bed at a decent time tonight...or ever.
I don't have access to an autoclaive, so maybe a mold tied to a string and spin it over my head? I see that going so wrong in so many ways...I might try it. Pressure pot first though...just in case it works better.

Hehe I thought of the manual spinning trick too, then realized that if it leaked or spilled at all, I would be shooting liquid resin around in a 360 arc... I can get away with a lot in my house or garage, but that would be over the line Failure would be catastrophic

So Jin came over today and interrupted me while I was emailing these pics to RSJake, so I will cross post them here.
Strawberry flavored women! With GIANT WEAPONS!
I kind of like the horse cutter style weapon in the first one, though wow, that blade is REALLY big for that too The only down side is that the mace is coming out of the mold in 4 pieces. I am hoping that I can work on the mold a little to correct that, but otherwise I will be getting a good cast, gluing it together then re-casting. Plus side, the hands came out of the first mold as entirely separate but whole pieces, so I can make molds of just them, and then any pole arm, rifle, flag or other long weapon can be slotted in, which could be really sweet.
The pictures don't do the model justice though, The sash and little chain are really incredible.

Nice! Wehrkind, looks like you might need to supply some sword blades along with that model!
Looks great! I can't wait to paint one!
Yeah, that sword was on the large side, maybe I should re-do the sword or make a different one for additional options. Automatically Appended Next Post: I forgot to post this earlier, but I added some more dye to the resin last night. I think it's a bit too dark now. And I'm not a fan of the brown, I want black, but that can wait for now.
Here is how the next female head turned out:
And here are some comparison shots to see the difference in color.
Bases, and Claws:
And here are copies of some Wolrd Eater Shoulder Pads I have done. (sorry for the blurry pic.)
Original, Brown Stuff, Apoxie Sculpt, White Resin, Light Brown Resin and Drak Brown Resin.
For being able to see detail, I think somewhere between the light and dark brown will be best.

Hehe yea, the sword blade looks pretty cool. I might try cutting it down just a little further though so that the tip is lined up with her ankle, partially because I just blue tacked the blade to the side of the shaft. But yea, a blade like that would be pretty sweet, and I have a mess of the sword blades floating around.
I think you are wrong though; that face looks like it came out black by DC standards! *rimshot* I agree though, the lighter colors are a lot better. Plus side, it means you only need to use a tiny amount of dye.
Also, glad to see the mold is working out for you Automatically Appended Next Post: You know, come to think of it, you should sculpt a few good power sabers and maybe a straight bladed sword. You are so good at that sort of tiny stuff you could make some great stuff that is actually to scale.

I'll look into making an assortment of CC weapons. That could be fun.
Speaking of weapons, does anyone know what weapon loadout the Demon Hunters usually have? I'm thinking I can just alter one of these FML#2's to be the Female Monster Hunter that was mentioned some time ago.
A flat-brimmed hat, open up the coat so it's not belted, add some plate armor, and sculpt different arms, I think it will work.
Yeah, a bit lighter on the resin should do it. I am also working on sculpting some dinosaurs at something around 30mm to 50mm. Nothing too detailed, but my daughter really likes dinosaurs, so I want to make her some toys, and then I can get some green resin dye, and I won't even have to paint them!

For some reason, plain old gray resin seems more professional to me. I don't know why.

In the reference, The FMH is carrying a sword and a null rod. However in playable terms from within the reference shes carrying a sword thats powered and a plasma (or bolt) pistol which is a very nice load out on the rules set of things. other things are holy fire sticks (braziers) or just a simple crossbow works too.

Thanks Swampy! Exacly what I needed for refference!
Vik, the color of the resin is not that important, but it is nice to have a product that can photograph well so people know what they're buying. At least for the ones getting photographed. I can always put a disclaimer on the ad saying actual resin color may vary.
But for the finished product, I don't think there is any difference in the color.
