This is a very good color scheme that really shows off the miniature. The model is very nice, and I'm certainly interested in the Forge Father range. Not sure yet if I'd buy any, mainly due to my current painting backlog. Why does the blue and gold look so crappy? It works well for Cygnar dogs and the Ultrasmurfs.

Likely because the Forgefather is very angular, rather than rounded like most Cygnar and Ultramarine models.
As for the model proper.
Well...it's clearly a Dwarf. I don't like the beardplate, I don't like that they basically took what appears to be the armor we saw on Gimli in the Lord of the Rings and added some techy bits to it.
Here I was thinking they were actually going to be making a unique race, not just "Dwarfs in Space!". My mistake.

Silly Kan, Mantic isn't that clever yet. The digital repaint works better for me for some reason.

I suppose it would make sense for room to be made in a helmet for an elaborate beard, if the person to be wearing it absolutely needed to have a beard.
I think it would be simpler to just shave than design a helmet to fit around a beard, but I'm not a dwarf.

I'm guessing they're going with the dwarven stereotype of leaving the beard as it is, lest they insult their deities or whatever.

I honestly don't know why you would expect anything unique out of a company whose entire business model is "cheaper models for GW's games" but that's just me

I agree.
It's a pretty common theme in anything involving Dwarves that their beards are extremely important, culturally speaking. Combine that with space combat where they'd have to wear a self contained breathing apparatus and you can sort of see why the beard-plate is necessary.
I'd like to see Space Wolves with beard-plates, actually.

Mainly because they're supposedly " GW but Creative" if some of their interviews are to believed.
Oh well. Maybe the human models will be better.

I think it's the blue paint that makes me hate it.. the gold scheme looks way better. Still, I dunno, I guess I was expecting a lot more after all the hype. It looks like the mock up drawing, which is fine, but that leads me to believe the orcs will look like theirs, and suck (don't like the orc concepts...) I like the human concept art, so here's hoping they come out good...
On that note, why did they have to do orcs at all? I mean, f'reals, there's so so so so so many things you can do with space aliens, why just copy GW here? I get that they want people to buy their models and use em in GW games, but still...

I think you understood it wrong... They are supposed to be "just Dwarfs in Space". That was the initial concept, they are regular fantasy dwarves, from a regular fantasy world, who evolved until the "space age". You know, when i refer to "regular" fantasy dwarfs, im talking about all the concept generated by gamers like us about them, in diferent medias (video game, wargames, RPG, card games, movies), trought the last 30-40 years, right?
Some concepts of the regular troopers show them without the beardplate, and they look better. I have to agree with you about it dont looking great. But it make sense, for a dwarf the beard is normally a simbol of honour, respect and pride, make sense that they want to protect them better into battle, right? Would you not protect your penis if going to battle?
I really hope the regular troopers comes with close combat weapons, that BFG looks cool, but i dont want my dwarfs to be a shooty army...

They are not necessarely copying GW. There is a monetary situation, they are not selling games, they are selling miniatures, and happening to have games with them. GW is the dominant company around, and so, they have public. Making similar products for cheaper prices, Mantic aim those GW players. That is why they are selling orcs in space, as they will sell elves in space. Additionally, GW is overconfident, and is lacking in a lot of things letting costumers unhappy. Mantic is trying to atract those costummers that for some reason want to play GW games, but dont want/could buy them from GW (as myself). In GW, orcs are a expensive army, loved by a lot of players, who are normally willing to save some bucks, not making orcs would be very dumb for Mantic in this situation...
And lets be true: develop a miniatures line is not cheap, do you think a company like mantic could afford to make ma shoot in the dark releasing something tottally new? Give them time, and they will bring something new, but right now it is not possible...

Yes they did indeed. They also looked like eggs, though.
I don't mind the concept pics, the model itself looks nice enough. The paintjob is a letdown after all of the "excitement" and "hype" with the facebook thing (one small picture of one model? really?) and the paintjob and lack of being properly based are disappointing and don't do the model much justice.

Love the olive-colored photo-shopping of the model.
Is it me, or does Mantic need to change who they're having paint their show models (is it Golem painting studios, or someone else?).
They never seem to do them justice, and tend to highlight the bad parts of the models (case in point: bulging eyes on the orcs) rather than making up for them, and highlighting the good parts.
What's up with that?

Well, I'm very pleased witht the fig, though I vastly prefer the Photoshop recolor. I'm in for some of these for sure. The only question is whether I'll buy a warband or an army. That will depend on the other units that are released and just how multipart the figs turn out to be.
As to the armored beard, it's wierd but cool and it shapes the armor a bit differently than other armored space types.
Interestingly, there's enough armor on this guy that I could see someone using them as space marine proxies. Standard marines are so wussy compared to the fluff, that using forgefathers and marine stats or scout marine stats might be an appropriate match.
