Mine would have to be end of Terminator 3. Despite the movie being mediocre and stupidly budgeted,
the Skynet nuking humanity scene is eerie yet glorious >.>
And the music is INCREDIBLE
Does babydoll fighting huge ass samuri with an awesome bjork remix playing in the background on sucker punch count as sci fi?
All the battle scenes from that movie were awesome. Dogfighting a dragon in a B-25?...how sweet is that?
I found that movie... confusing. I went into it with great expectations, but in the end I was just numb from all the robots and samurai and nazis and dragons and miniguns and so much nonsense that it just became loose sand. Awesome stuff is awesome, but this was just someone nerdgasming in my face for 1,5 hours.
It was the most interesting dance movie I ever saw though.

4. Flying the Millenium Falcon out of the exploding Death Star - Return of the Jedi
When they play tested Jedi the original ending had Lando, Nien and the Falcon destroyed as the death star explodes.
The test audiences said they didn't like it, they were asked if it was because Lando died and said no, it was because the Falcon is blown up.
If you watch the original cinema release (if you can find a version Lucas hasn't ruined) you will notice there are hardly any shots of Lando at the party on Endor - that is why.

Hmm, I guess it would have been more dramatic, but nowhere near as cool (it's the poor tie fighter just behind them that I always feel sorry for)
My personal explanation is that this is a sign of how the Old Republic has gotten bureaucratic and perhaps a bit corrupt. My interpretation that has no actual support within the movies or the EU is that the Midichlorians are commonly found int he blood of Force users, but not the definitive test. If a person is Force sensitive and is exposed to Midichlorians, they will likely have a high count. If they aren't exposed, they may never get that, and will come up negative in the quickly-run low-cost blood test that most Old Republic children probably get at some point. The 'old way' to find Force Sensitives is to have Jedi do the testing used to confirm Anakin's abilities in the movie, but this test is time-intensive and requires a Jedi to administer, so it's not practical in bulk.
The Old Republic being massive, they've got to count on the less accurate test getting 99% of the prospective Jedi and the rest either don't discover their abilities or are a minor issue.
Of course, none of this is official.
Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

NiiloTimantti wrote:My Favourite Sci-Fi Moment ...Ever!™ is from Ghost in the Shell (the film, although the manga's awesome), when Kusanagi fights the spider tank near the end of the film:
Kusanagi dodges shells from the tank by doing somersaults up a staircase, right after that there is a shot of the tank's rounds hitting the wall behind her. There is an evolutionary tree of life sculpted on the wall and the shells tear it to pieces. That one shot of the tree is my favorite moment. Still get goosebumps just thinking about it.
Goddamn, I go through the entire thread thinking nobody's mentioned this yet, and then here it is right at the end. Oh well!
Also, the title scene from Serenity. The music gets me every time I hear it.
And of course the part where River Tam Beats Up Everyone™
Many more possible favourite moments, but these will do for now.
Doctor Who was already mentioned, but my absolute favourite quote was from the 2nd last episode with Christopher Eccleston "Bad Wolf", when he gets up in the Daleks' grills over their plans.
Dalek: Explain yourself.
The Doctor: I said no.
Dalek: What is the meaning of this negative?
The Doctor: It means no!
Dalek: But she will be destroyed!
The Doctor: *No*! 'Cause this is what I'm gonna do - I'm gonna rescue her! I'm gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of the Dalek fleet, and then I'm gonna save the Earth, and *then* - just to finish you off - I'm gonna wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky!
Dalek: But you have no weapons, no defences, no *plan*!
The Doctor: Yeah, and doesn't that scare you to death?
His delivery reminds me so much of Tom Baker's 'manic' acting in the same types of scenes of incredulity.
I just wish he had stayed for more than the one season.

I LOVE that scene!!! I also love it when some military guy on the radio asks Connor who is in charge and Connor pauses then says "I am"
My top:
All the future war scenes from T1 and T2.
The air duct scene from Alien.
When Optiums Prime shows up and single handily changes the tide of battle for Autobot City (You know in the only REAL TF movie?)

* Doctor Who episodes: Don't blink, Silence in the library and Turn left. Especially turn left.
* Bladerunner: Battys speach.
* Star Wars - A new hope: Binary sunset scene.
* Torchwood: Children of earth miniseries and the trailers for these episodes (especially "The Doctor" trailer.
* The pre-release "documentaries" for Halo 3.

Can still hear the tunes from "The touch" remembering that scene
I like the part where the Terminator has just minigunned and grenaded the cops vehicles to a fairthewell, and the killcount comes up his HUD as a block of zeroes.
If nothing else it implies that a singleTerminator might need to use numbers in excess of a million to track its kills...

The part of the book 'Gunheads' when Sgt. Wulfe beats the gap out of Cpl. Lenck. I wonder if any of you have read this book, even though it is part of the 40k universe.
I also like the part of Avatar where they blow the crap out of the big tree ecosystem. That part was cool, but everyone in the theatre looked at me strangely when I stood up and cheered during that part.

Haha right, actually there are so many moments in that film.
It made the travesty that was the 3rd film even more powerful. My mates and I were queuing outside the cinema for that film, humming the theme tune, 3 hours later we felt like a small part of us had died
I remember reading a comment from James Cameron that if he ever saw Jonathon Mostow (director of the 3rd film) walking down the street he would smack him. He had made a film so bad that it had actually damaged the 2nd film.

Haha, same here. Finally humans have the superior firepower, rather than running around getting blown up by flying saucers.
Feeling way too lazy to compile my shortlist right now, but I felt compelled to make this quick post after watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes for the first time last night. All in all, a truly fantastic film, filled with great moments - mostly involving super-intelligent apes kicking ass.
One scene in particular earned a spot as being undoubtedly one of my favourite sci-fi - nay, filmic - moments ever. More specifically, one single word in that scene. Everyone who's seen that film knows exactly what I'm talking about, so let's not spoil it for the rest. That was one hell of a "jaw hits floor" moment. Not to mention being unbelievably awesome.

I agree 100% I really liked that movie, and the scene your talking about was one of the best movie moments for me lately. Hated the harry potter kid as it was but after this movie I would have to restrain myself from some physical contact of the violent kind.

That is sad. Bob Anderson created practically every great sword fight in cinema history, right back to the days of Errol Flynn. Here's my favourite...

*raises glass* To Bob Anderson!
(Also, did the BBC really need to tell people which person in that picture was Darth Vader? )
