No worries, hope you find it useful - i'm excited to see how yours turn out!

Spoilered this one cause it's a lot of big pics.

Spoiler:

I have decided to batch all of the last guard together in an attempt to move on to the next project! Let's see how that goes...I keep telling myself I did a batch of 22 in the last big push!

I have also been playing with a few other things. Got a new concept for Exalted Flamers - and I think I love it. They tie in closer with the regular flamers, look a lot less butt pluggy, and let me reuse the current parts in a project/s for bigger daemons. I'm ordering some wooden spheres off ebay because the marbles are just asking for trouble with balance/sending aquarium rocks scattering when they tip over!

For reference, current exalted flamers (wow the paint is super thick - and there's a panel on the front one that's missing colour altogether! need to break these guys up and strip them back before I build something else with them...):

And regular flamers:

I also don't know if I've shared this with the blog before but I've slowly been collecting a few bits and pieces to start an Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind-themed Eldar kill team as it is one of my favourite video games and settings ever and using mostly OOP Eldar pieces are they are some of my favourite sculpts ever.

This is the general feel I'm going for with armour/aesthetic, will be a mixture of paintjob and some forays into sculpting to achieve some of the effects:

So far, i have snagged these guys off ebay.

These guys will be two dire avengers, painted up similarly to the guy in glass armour/Daedric helmet above. Might try and sculpt a bit of detail/crystal work onto their armour, but otherwise leaving them unconverted. Think their masks suit Daedric helmets pretty perfectly!

A bunch of OOP wyches that I will do up as howling banshees. I want to try and paint these guys with Vivec's half-chimer half-dunmer skin style.

(guy on the right). Will be a fairly small conversion, I want to put a Redoran Watchman's helm on him and maybe try to chitin up the shoulderpads.

I think this guy fits the bill as a Striking Scorpions exarch, heavily armoured, pistol and sword. The helmet will be done up as a Skyrim-styled Dwarven helmet (steam attack sounds like a good replacement for the mandiblaster) and dreugh cuirass with bonemold arm/leg armour.

That's it so far. I want to grab one of these and paint it up as a Netch, stick a heavy weapon on it and use it as a support platform.

'

I plan on eventually expanding to include some wraithguard done up to look like dwarven centurions:

and working a silt strider in somehow; either as a wraithlord or maybe a transport. Not sure if I will try to sculpt most of it or use some tyranid/plague fly parts to try and do a lot of the heavy lifting...

Anyway, I'm excited. Sorry for the big long post with little progress!

Thanks for looking - hopefully have something fun to post soon! 8-)

Oh, you have to get a silt strider in somehow! I have no idea how, but they were one of my favorite parts of morrowind. The mournful sounding cries they had added so much to the atmosphere of the game

Thanks all! Appreciate the comments. No work to show on the Eldar KT yet, though I have a group shot of everything I have so far.

Definitely working on a silt strider turtles, just got to figure out how! Maybe a combination of tyranid chitin bits and war walker/wraithlord legs...

Outside that, I finished the Kriegsmen off and took some group shots.

Here's the army my brother is getting for Christmas:

Here's the boys I'm keeping:

And here's the lot all together:

Not sure what else is next. Maybe finally get around to painting the second set of BFSP dwarves as that's all of my "commitment" painting done and I can just play around with whatever takes my fancy after that.

Thanks for looking & hope everyone gets some downtime and a lot of love over Christmas. Cheers!

Thanks mate! It is really nice to see them ranked up together. I still don't enjoy the process of painting that much but I do love having a painted army!

And the Chrissy present isn't totally out of the kindness of my own heart (or pockets)! All the Krieg dudes were originally my brothers' minis. They had been sitting around unbuilt & painted for a few years so he passed them on with the reasoning that a least they'll get some use some day. I figure sending a few back is the least I can do, plus I played a game on the weekend with the full infantry load out and decided that the horde army gameplay is just not for me!

I'd much rather push a handful of tanks around the table than worry about fiddling around with a heap of infantry squads; and transport becomes a nightmare.

The way I see it everyone wins here 8-)

It does leave my guard sitting at around 1750 pts rather than a full 2k, but I think I can solve that by separating the two Solar Auxilia guys from their 60mm base and making another two squads of scions out of some leftover guys, and maybe picking up another $2 artillery piece from ebay.

Or bullgryns. Or sentinels. Options!

I feel like tyranid bits are probably the best bet for silt striders, yeah.

Anyhow, that is one heck of a gift!

Thanks DJJazzyJeff! Hope he's happy with them. I am planning to take down 500 pts of daemons to hopefully get a game in over the break.

Thanks turtles! They're sort of iconically sci fi. They somehow remind me of both the AT-AT and AT-ST from star wars at the same time. They are expensive, but I will keep an eye on ebay. I think they fit the snow theme - probably because of the Star Wars link!

Thanks CB! Always appreciate you stopping by.

Anyway, a bit of an update today. Not much paint work, but a bit of building.

The new big guy - probably a second LoC or a Magnus counts-as. I scrapped the old one; while I loved the wings and they will probably pop up somewhere else at a later stage, I didn't love the giant diamond hanging underneath and had trouble removing/covering up/blending in the lines of pre-glued glitter. He's missing about an inch off the real LoC model/slightly more compared to Magnus, which bugs me. I tried a longer rod, but it looked weird floating up so high. As I type this I realise that maybe the answer is to build the base up a bit with some ruins to make the gap less noticeable. Hmm...

I also love the way the wings look on him from the front, and they certainly fit the profile of a LoC/Magnus more closely, but can't find a way to make them look good from the back. Will keep playing around, but I'm pretty happy with how he is at the moment from an aesthetic perspective - it's just the OCD in me that wants to try and match the official silhouette as much as possible.

And these guys are new contenders for my favourite model from this army - burning chariots.

The exalted flamer from the last post got rebuilt into the Changeling

And the re-reduxed exalted flamers now match regular flamers more closely.

And the first exodite ready for paint. I gave this guy a wrist-mounted pistol I took from an old Dark Eldar warrior because I'll end up running him as a double shuriken catapult Dire Avenger Exarch in Kill Team.

Here's the paint inspiration for him:

Thanks for looking - hopefully have some paint down soon!

And the exodites will be an interesting project.

Then again i am biased to such fringe armies

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the words of encouragement.

First exodite has some paint on him!

I'm quite happy with how the gems turned out, and his paintjob overall - especially because I have either misplaced or ruined all my good brushes and worked mainly with makeup brushes and a toothpick on him

I really struggled highlighting the red against the black though - I think the face got to an okay point, but still not happy with the mohawk. I have heard good things about Wild Rider Red, so I might pick that up when I go in for some more Valhallan Blizzard. Which I need, because I must have been running low when I first based the Exalted Flamers as they got a skimpy little serve. I remedied that and have them nearly ready for colour washes - just awaiting a layer of Ironbreaker.

I'm gonna try and get these guys finished before we leave on Monday, so stay tuned!

SO MANY GEMS

But they look great and contrast well with how dark the rest of his scheme is - a darkness that helps sell the Exodite-not-Harley angle too

Exalted flamers are WAY bigger than I expected! Also cool work on the new LOC, those wings are great.

Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback!

Yeah, they were my first time painting gems too. What did people do to learn new techniques before the internet?

I had intended to do a bit more conversion work on these Eldar minis, but I am not very impressed with my GS skills and I really do love the old sculpts and am worried about not being able to fix the mess I come up with. We will see with the next few!

I think I have also found a way to position the wings on the big guy's back in a way that looks good. Just need to do some filling on the back of the bike visor to get away from the "this is moulded plastic" look and then I can mount them up and get started.

Probably won't see any more painting progress until next year, though. Need the weekend to get things sorted for going home for Chrissy.

Anyway, I have finished the Changeling.

And the Exalted Flamers. I thought, there is a lot of blue in the army at the moment and the Pink Horrors are the only ones with the red/purple scheme. I originally thought about matching them more closely to the regular flamers; but I think I will repaint those boys as I don't like how uniform they are with their each-segment-same-colour-same-order thing.

And took some more shots of the Exodite. Not on his home turf here!

As I said there won't be much to post about in the next few weeks. I will try and remember to take some photos if I do manage to get a game in with my brother and do a bit of a batrep, as well as writing some fluff for the new guys.

If I don't see you again, Merry Christmas, and thanks as always for looking!

That Exodite came out fantastic! I like how you used the gems to reimagine the green glow, cool idea. For a mini painted with big brushes and a toothpick it’s mighty impressive

Thank you everyone! Appreciate the feedback and glad you are liking the Exodite so far.

I have found a bit of time (yay, Christmas!) and wrote some fluff for the flamers and have made a bit of mini progress too.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Czerno's squad went over the Wall, never came back.

Chee Kam's boys too.

Taggart, Ross and McAllister all went over together with a Valk in tow. No word back, no dog tags or black box recovered.

I've been in the Guard thirteen years, and never have I felt more like meat in the grinder.

We were in the Canphor system, on some frozen moon of a gas giant. Our bogies had taken over the carcass of a processing plant that turned gas cans from the big boy into fuel for starships. They weren't operating it, or even using it for scrap, but the big =I= wanted it back anyway.

We just wanted to know what it was that we were fighting.

Briefing said whatever alien species we were sent there to delete had some inbuilt camo finagling that wouldn't show up on our pictos. They appeared as sort-of empty blurred out spaces on all the images. Like there'd been a sticker there that someone scratched off, leaving a bit of silver gunk behind.

Get out there, Emperor's finest. Climb fifty feet of ice and rust and look for gunk monsters to shoot with your flashlight.

Not exactly inspiring stuff.

The twin suns were bright but about as warm as a cantina microwave burrito. Made sleeping hard and drying your socks harder.

Then, they did come back. Gordon's squad - three of 'em, anyway, and no Gordon.

Boyle's lasgun grip was joined to his hand and he was missing an eye - and half of his face.

Most of Telouse's forehead had melted over his brow.

Jurgen was a mess. Like his skin had been turned inside out.

All of them naked, frostbitten to the knees and not a hair on them.

None of them made it through the night, but word trickled back from the medics about what they'd seen.

The silver scratches we saw on the pictos weren't too far off the mark.

What we missed was that while the planet's surface might have been untouched, the bogies had been busy underneath.

Drills, gone. Storage facilities, hollowed out. A giant cavern, filled with singing stones and crystal snakes - and something else.

Something worse. And something growing.

Those men who didn't make it back? They were made into something else, down underground. Stripped down and used like building blocks.

They're all together now - that's what Gordon's boys kept saying.

They're all together now.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I have been pottering around with some more of the Eldar. I've really had fun on the bases as pretty much every mini I've painted in the last two years has had the same quick & dirty snow base, so it's a bit exciting to muck around with something new. Plus there are so few of them that it feels good to spend a bit more time making them unique.

The guy on the right will be painted up in the same scheme as the other Dire Avenger, and has a bit of alien foliage on his base made out of the back spines of Warmachine's Issyria Sybil of Dawn mini - which will show up later as a converted psyker, I loved her pose but not the goofy spikes or anime hair.

The guy on the left will counts as a Howling Banshee exarch and will get the new spear to act as his Executioner. He has been based leaping through some Dwemer ruins made from sprue and a Necromunda valve wheel. He will be painted up in the style of Vivec from the game. I wanted to clip the hair off to match, but it is attached to his neck/shoulder and I don't trust my ability to rebuild what I mess up. In the lore he is sometimes depicted as having a flaming halo so I might have a play with incorporating that into his paintjob.

Hello everyone,

Had a bit of fun today and want to share with you guys.

Firstly (and not from today), I started working on the Howling Banshee Exarch's spear. Going to do a bit more GS work - haven't decided yet if I want to go for a more Daedric look or classic Chitin.

This morning I managed to squeeze in a 500 pt game with my brother. It was his first game of 9th so we just ran CP as re-rolls rather than using stratagems.

Here was the table set-up at my parents' house using whatever we had on hand, including some of our childhood toys they'd gotten out for tzurk jr:

He was running as Cadians with a full dakka Pask - gatling cannon and triple HBs - two company commanders and three squads with a flamer each.

I brought down the disc herald to run as a Daemon Prince because I like the model better and my prince wouldn't fit in the box I brought them all down in, a foot herald, 20 pinks and 10 brims.

We just played a simple game with 4 objectives in a diamond shape, one each in our deployment zones, with hold 1, hold 2 and hold more. No secondaries, just a bit of fun.

This was the state of the board after my brother's first movement phase - he'd marched some infantry up on the right to put pressure on that objective, moved his tank up out of hiding to take advantage of a deployment mistake I made in not keeping the horrors out of the open firing lane, and Move Move Move!'d his other infantry squad up to claim the objective on the left.

This was the horror unit after being pummelled by a double-shooting BRRRRRRT from Pask and a failed morale check.

On my first turn, I floated my Daemon Prince up the left flank, threw a Smite into the guard squad there and then proceeded to reduce them to just the sergeant through melee and morale. Pask was still there; I was gambling on the DP's 3+ invulnerable allowing him to live through a turn of shooting and bring his axe to bear against the tank.

I pushed my two remaining horrors up to the right objective because I didn't know what else to do with them, and also managed to plink one guardsman with the foot herald on that side. I should have wrapped the brimstones around to provide him with cover against shooting but forgot to.

On his turn 2, my brother moved his guard squads up over the wall and mowed down my remaining horrors and put a wound on the herald through split fire with the flamers.

The sergeant fell back from my daemon prince, allowing Pask to unload - but he survived with 2 wounds remaining. The company commander then managed to plink one more off with a lucky laspistol shot, leaving my Warlord with a single wound remaining and the mammoth task of punching through the tank on my next turn!

I did manage to sneak an Overwatch-free charge by charging from out of line of sight, and the Prince then managed to chew through 8 of Pask's 12 wounds - not quite enough to drop him to bottom bracket unfortunately, but still a good chunk.

My herald failed his smite against the guardsmen and retreated over the wall.

On his turn 3, my brother blasted the DP off the table and brought his guard round to threaten the brimstones holding my backfield objective - only 3 remained!

On my turn 3, the herald tried some sneaky tricks with blocking LoS to ensure Pask was the only available target for Smite, but missed the supersmite I needed and left him with 2 wounds remaining.

The brims bravely popped out and managed to smite the guardsmen with a lucky 6 roll, which managed to be my last action before getting wiped off the board next turn.

It was an absolute drubbing, but it was fun and quick and a good distraction between all the eating.

That'll be it from me until the New Year.

Merry Christmas everyone, stay safe and enjoy the company of your loved ones and spoil each other with love and joy.

8-)
