Thanks everybody! Glad you liked the battle report, it was a fun little interlude in a great couple of weeks over Christmas.

We've been home since Monday and in between unpacking and adventures with tzurk jr haven't gotten much hobbying done, but managed to finish the burning chariots.

Overall, I am really happy with these! I love the lines/silhouette/momentum of the design and am happy with how the colours turned out - chosen to link them with the Exalted Flamers as their shape is radically different despite the GW model being being an EF on a thumbtack pulled by pancake horses. I am not happy with the swirling on the black spheres; again, I need to go buy a detail brush and then will go back over and tidy up them up.

I also did a few little tidy ups on some things that needed it; cleaned up one of the EF's bases that hadn't been given a black rim, redid the snow on some Brimstones who had yellowed from back when I was experimenting with PVA/bicarb/white paint and got the ratios wrong; and pulled a yellow Ork symbol out of the base of a pink horror as it clashed horribly and I've wanted to fix it ever since I first looked at it. I also adjusted the DP to not float on an angle as it was precarious in-game and I didn't like the look of it. I still don't like the look of it. The DP is one of the most frustrating minis in the army at the moment; that trick rubiks cube was the inspiration that kicked off this whole journey and I just can't get it to look the way I want to in my head. It needs a repaint, too, as the colours are way too chunky atm. Oh well - put it on the to-do list for this time next year

Since they were all out together anyway, I thought I'd take some group shots.

birds eye - this is what I see when I play with them!

Close ups of chonky but horizontal DP

and just for fun I decided I'm going to try and turn these guys into a 500 pt Ad Mech force using junk from my bitz box - let me introduce you to the future Dinosaurius Rawl and his Kataphron Battle Servisaurs

this is the inspiration...

In Eldar news, I've primed the second Dire Avenger and that's about it - he'll probably be next to be painted while I fumble around with the other stuff.

I will hopefully be back tonight after tzurk jr's gone to sleep. I have the start of a fluff piece for the chariots in my head.

Happy New Year to everyone - let's hope 2021 is a safe and productive year for all!

There's a bit of a theme in my work of doing things a bit differently - and my own Exodites are already locked into bugs and ancient robots as their "thing". I'm still not 100% on ad mech yet though - have looked at maybe using them as tyranids or tau...will have to take a look at some rules and see where "dinos with lasers" best fits mechanically!

Hahaha! Thank you for the name and the mental image

I scratched up some fluff for the burning chariots.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Clavert, who'd grown up on an ag world, saw them as enormous mutie oxen charging around, churning up the snow.

Thule was born on a gas giant and said they could have passed for one of the airships she used to coast in along the trade routes with her family.

Gorman and Gorman came from Aqua Infinitus and swore up and down we were shooting our flashlights at old world sailboats.

I spent my youth dragging ethyl racers in the Old City ruins, and that's what they looked like to me.

Regardless, they hurt. They were blinding fast and burning hot - they could throw out exhaust fumes that'd cook a squad in five seconds flat, but they mostly seemed interested in the tanks.

That was no good for Commander Silva, who lost her Russ and her legs on the first day.

It was no good for us, either. It was our job to look after the artillery - mostly a nice safe job - but what are we supposed to do against enemies like that?

After we'd figured out our small arms were useless and they weren't all that interested in us footsloggers, we spent more time arguing over whether our brains or the bogies were responsible for the different ways we saw them than we did actually trying to stop them from slagging the big guns.

I thought it was obvious they were pulling the strings - they were reaching out and grabbing ideas from our minds, our childhood, and playing them in front of us. Vanderbligh, who was a doctor before getting conscripted, was the only other one on my side though. He said there was no way he could be looking at a giant fire-breathing goldfish taking up the same space as Hilda's flying metronome.

Vanderbligh's parents had run an aquarium back home.

Hilda had been a prodigal pianist as a child.

They knew us, and they were using it against us. Whether it was some kind of sick joke or just how they
were - I couldn't bring myself to use the word natural when talking about them - didn't quite matter to me. I never really felt much malice in them. After all, we were still alive.

The others seemed to think it was just their brains making the connection, something like a group hallucination where they all chose their own adventure.

I'm not sure I ever understood their arguments, but then I guess I'd already made up my mind.

General Dore pulled us out on day nine once the last bassie had been burned down to the tracks.

I've been in plenty of fights since then, but none of them have left such a mark. And the worst part is, none of us can go home without thinking about them.

Bastards.

I have pretty much finished up the second Exodite dire avenger/buoyant armiger. The cast on the right side of his face was a bit sloppy but other than that I really loved painting him. Old Eldar really have a beautiful range, and it just feels right to hold metal minis in your hand.

The pair of them together. Don't you love when your two bosses point you in different directions for your charge...8-)

Up next - finish the sculpting on wych-vivec's spear and get him painted up. Then probably trying to work out how to smooth out Magnus' wings to add on.

Happy painting everyone

Apologies for bad photos - I keep meaning to take more WIPs but the lightbox is packed away and it's been too grey and cloudy to get photos done outside.

We're getting there with the Vivec Exodite - having a lot of fun with this one! I am really proud of the yellow side of the skin, took so many layers to get decent coverage but very happy with how it came out. Also quite liking the chitin at the moment.

Not sure if I will keep the hair, was just playing around. I think I like it, but also thought about painting it red - or purple, or white, or blue, or splitting it down the middle like the skin... hmmm 8-)

Also need to find a way to up the contrast between metal and ash on the base.

Thanks for the comments guys!

@gobert, the armour is a base of Kharak Stone, washed with Agrax, and then drybrushed/stippled with a variety of mixes of Kharak, Ushabti Bone, and white.

I'm not calling him finished yet because there's still a bit more work I'd like to do on him, but I'm going to put the banshee/wych aside for now and work on Maggy. I took advantage of 20 mins of sun today to take a few photos.

Here's the inspiration behind the banshee exarch; the one and only hermaphroditic bug-wearing divinity-stealing destiny-screwing fourth-wall-breaking warrior-poet God of the Tribunal Vivec:

And here's the probably 90% finished mini:

The Dunmer/grey side of his face needs more work as you can see in this pic

The group so far

And took more photos of maggy just to show you his overall shape/size

Will have a play with colours on him next - I am thinking I will stick with the very tzeentchy triad of blue/purple/teal, just got to figure out where i want them.

Thanks guys! Glad you like the new fella. I feel like these three (the exodites) have been a real step up in painting for me; the two DAs are really nothing special but there were a few new techniques in there and they turned out pretty much exactly as I envisioned them in my head, which very rarely happens for me! Then the Vivexodite is probably the highest quality paintjob I've ever produced, and that probably has to do with him being part of a kill team rather than a larger army and being able to take my time with him and just try things out, as well as not being afraid to stuff up and repaint.

I have finished Magnus - and of course, after being so happy with the Eldar and the burning chariots, the big guy turned out to be the total opposite. I repainted him a few times as I struggled with colour combos and never really felt 100% happy with his overall shape. In the end I just pushed him through and was done with it. He brings my Daemon army up to 3000 points; that is probably enough, and unless inspiration strikes I will probably happily let them decorate my shelves as they are for a while now. for the actual playability of the list I'd love to add another 30-man blob or two of pink horrors and maybe another 5 screamers but I just can't bring myself to start that job at the moment.

More pics spoilered for sheer size - tried to capture all the different angles cause he's a bit of an odd shape.

Spoiler:

I've also had some fun playing around with basing for the next 3 exodites - from left to right a ranger, guardian who will babysit the weapons platform, and a striking scorpion exarch. You can't see well in the photos but the exarch is on one of the industrial Necromunda bases that has been scattered over a bit with sand. I had originally planned on sculpting a new helm for the ranger based on the Redoran watchman's helm from Morrowind, but I realised that his current helmet is almost a perfect match for the base chitin helmet from the game, and there is another oop metal ranger with a mouth covering that will (hopefully) be easier to blend into the helmet attempt. I am also thinking of paring back the rubble a bit on the middle guy as I think I got carried away a little!

I am really loving this project at the moment - I haven't felt this excited for modelling since I started the geo daemons. Having fun just taking my time and enjoying each mini as an individual piece!

These have got me thinking about going back and rebasing at least one of the dire avengers though...maybe putting the ex-Harlequin up on some cork rock or more industrial stuff...hmmm!

Happy hobbying everyone and thanks for stopping by 8-)

Magnus looks pretty scary to me, your geo-daemons always bring back nightmares. I suppose that’s the point of them!

The ranger on the other hand is all win as far as I’m concerned! The balancing on the rocks is just pure Eldar, I love it!

Appreciate the kind words, everyone!

Glad you like the geo daemons Not Online!, they're my baby and it's always nice to hear other people enjoy them.

@turtles thank you! I am really proud of his face - and that's the first time I've ever been able t say that about a miniature have some more morroweirdness in this post I hope you'll enjoy 8-)

@gobert I wasn't sure if the ranger was too much up there, so good to see it's okay in your books! Hopefully a few more scenic bases in the bunch help balance it out.

Anyway, I took some army shots of the daemons as a reward for "finishing" them. It hasn't been that long since the last group shot, but since then I've rebalanced the DP and redone the Exalted Flamers as well as adding the chariots, Magnus, and the Changeling.

If I had infinite time and resources and energy there's a lot I'd change about these guys, but overall I am really happy and proud of them as a whole. They aren't all home runs but I think they stand up as solid proof of the concept they were originally designed to test. sparkle sparkle sleep slurrpp

More in spoilers:

Spoiler:

In Dunmeldari news, I have started to paint the Striking Scorpion Exarch - who has been demoted to "regular old Storm Guardian" after I nabbed a more fitting exarch from ebay (another harlequin, who will be painted up as an ordinator).

Following his demotion I thought it would be fun to have a bit of a play with his equipment. I'm going for the classic "levelling in the Outlands" look - ie. you're playing your favourite RPG and you've just spent four hours crawling through a dungeon and come out with a bunch of new gear with sexy stats - BUT it's all mismatched and hideous. Here I've given him a dwarven helmet, Royal Guard armour, bonemold pauldrons & boots, chitin gauntlets, iron greaves, and a glass sword. It's just basecoats and washes atm so a long way to go, but I'm kind of happy with how gross he looks already.

And I've made up another guardian defender too. Despite how much i loved the "mohawk and sunglasses" look of the old metal eldar gunner, I thought it was too far out of the TES:III universe to work and set about seeing if I could fix it. There's still a lot of tidying up to do, but I've replaced his head with an old DE gunner helmet that I think will work as a chitin/Falmer inspired helm, and tried to cover the chop job with the start of a fur collar.

I have ordered all the parts I need to get this kill team working including the new exarch, the Weapons Platform Netch and an old fusion gun guardian. Really looking forward to bringing them all together and even thinking I will make a display board for them once I'm done.

Back to it - thanks for looking! 8-)

Daunting is probably the right word, though I guess I didn't know it at the time. Lots of units went through changes and revisions and scrapping of ideas before I even posted about them here. I think I was always cautious that there was a fine line between hitting the concept and being silly/over the top.

Glad you like the kill team, they are a bit of a departure from the norm for me but I'm really enjoying them so far.

Welcome aboard mate and thanks for commenting! Eldar are definitely an awesome faction (who deserve a lot more love from GW...)

Have a few more dudes for the Kill Team to share - had a nice lazy rain day yesterday where I manage to get a heap of painting done in between watching Disney movies with tzurk jr.

Here's a group shot of everybody that I've painted so far all together:

So you can see that I've finished "Mr Levelling in Outlands" and his mismatched gear. Quietly very happy with how his sword came out as I had originally planned to just paint it like a gem before I got intimidated by all the different faces on the sword. I've got four photos of each of the dude but I'll just show the front shot and spoiler the others cause pics are huge.

Spoiler:

I also worked through the ranger. I think his coat is supposed to go all the way to his neck but I preferred the idea of a chitin chest piece over robes. Also put some WIP shots in the spoiler. What did we do before Agrax Earthshade?

Spoiler:

Guardian #1. What's he carrying? Radioactive lunchbox, alien spanner set or a nuclear cat carrier? Who knows...

Spoiler:

Guardian #2. I'm sad that I lost some detail around his mask, esp the eyes and mouth, but that's what I get for not stripping painted minis from eBay. Might try to tidy it up with some more shading.

Spoiler:

And with that, a good chunk of the team is done! There is the new Scorpion Exarch, the netch weapons platform and the meltagun guardian on the way, plus I need to find a suitable head for the lotus-pose farseer and buy a box of wraithguard. I also want to pick up one of those old bug-eyed farseers and paint him up with a Telvanni Cephalod helmet. And another ranger and have a crack at sculpting a Watchman's helm. And work out a way to make a silt strider, although that will probably end up counting as a Wave Serpent for skirmish games.

I am pretty happy with the team so far, I feel like I have managed to convey some sense of Dunmer culture into them. For reference, here is some of the concept art and in-game screenshots that I had in mind when choosing sculpts & palettes.

Thanks for looking and happy painting everyone 8-)

Been having a bit of a play around with a few things.

The smaller dinosaurs fit nicely on a 60mm base. I had planned to rely on my bit box to kit these guys out but I think I will end up buying the Kataphron Servitors box as it will have enough bits to kit 3 out as breachers and 3 out as destroyers and help solidify the ad mech theme.

Trying out a few head options for the lotus pose farseer. I would love to use the OOP bug-eyed farseer here but I doubt my ability to remove it from the body without damaging it.

Original head is a no-go due to silly elf ears and giant ponytail.

Old Dark Eldar warrior head would need to be stripped first (learning from mistakes ) and require some work done around the neck/collar area to fix the proportions, but it has a nice Vivec feel to it.

The old Skitarii Vanguard helmet backwards trick looks a lot like the Ebony Closed Helm from Morrowind, but I think is too chunky on this figure and could maybe be used somewhere else.

In-game Ebony armour:

And the mock-up:

I don't love either of these at the moment. I am thinking I might pick up a box of Harlequins and use one of their masks to copy an ordinator style mask, then make a Kill Team with the leftovers - no waste! Speaking of ordinators, the new Striking Scorpion Exarch arrived, and after a quick weapon swap to match their equipment in-game, he's ready to paint.

We're watching you. Scum.

Here is the palette inspiration. Gold armour, red/orange mohawk, light grey/blue jacket, black/gold mace.

I am also not sure I am totally happy with Mr Mixalot's boots and pauldrons matching and will maybe repaint one or the other. Potentially as ebony, just for a bit of variety.

And lastly, I mentioned Kill Team earlier in this post. I did a bit of an inventory today and these are the teams that I have models for. Most of them are unbuilt and unpainted. This might be the next project...though it feels like I have said that a lot lately!

Thanks for looking & happy painting 8-)

Haha, that is exactly right! We'll get there eventually, and it all will have been worth it!

Thanks Ragsta, really appreciate your comments. A lot of effort went into the daemon army, both making the minis and writing the fluff. I am not a confident writer and was always more nervous/self-conscious about sharing the stories than the models themselves so it feels good to hear you liked them. And I'm having a blast with the Exodites so far!

Thanks mate! They have been an absolute joy to paint.

I finished up the Ordinator last night, barring the few touch ups that photos always bring to your attention. I am thinking of repainting the brown leather part of his jacket in a darker navy blue though, to match the skirt part of the in-game Ordinator's armour. Not sure if I can be bothered and worried I will regret it though. Any thoughts from dakka?

Tzurk jr also got in on the painting last night and showed his dad a thing or two about how to swing a brush.

He painted up this "brachiosaurus" with a few different colours. He picked the whole "wash brush, dry brush, pick new colour" process very quickly. And he's already done more wet on wet blending than I have!

He also had a go at some of his train tracks. I think he has an eye for colour combos already!

What next? I'm out of Eldar minis now until the new guys arrive... Surely this productivity monsoon has to dry up soon, so I have to find something, and quick...

Thanks for looking and happy painting everyone 8-)
