I think I saw a conversion on warseer that had the whole downward fin rotated 90 degrees to lengthen the tail and put the tail wings higher, with a modest yaw fin. The only problem is that in this position the moulded yaw panel loses its sense.

Ah, you did the same thing I did with both my Raven and Talon. Reverse the tailfin. I think it looks a lot better, but otherwise they are both standard.

Works for me. Can you paint them as one piece?
I have noticed that with other necron vehicles it is easier to part assemble the vehicle in sections and paint those before final assembly (mainly as there are bits that are difficult to rech if the model is fully assembled).

The pilot would be a candidate to paint beforehand. The rest as one piece IMO.

I've been having a hard time trying to find WD 389... It's sold out on GW's website, TheWarStore doesn't have stock, nor do any of my local stores. Any chance they'll pdf these rules and post them on their site? Same questions for the SOB codex, I suppose. I'd like to look at it, but I'm not buying 2 WD's to do it.

I suspect that they will a few months later as the lack of WD will negatively impact sales (no rules, no kit purchase!). They did the same thing with the eldar nightspinner rules a few months after release.

I saw some WD in WHSmiths the other day... I thought that GW had stopped allowing that.
Maybe they sent out too many to second party sellers and because everyone was used to not being able to buy them there, the GW stores ran out?
Who knows? but Didcott WHSmiths had a dozen sat there

This is just a WIP, not shown are the Tail and wing extensions to make it have at least the right length and wingspan.
There will be either be bombs or guns placed under the wings, and i will probably get some plastic tubing to enlarge the grot's guns. in either case, the chin turret will be used when this is played as a Dakka jet.

Every single flyer my LGS has purchased is sitting on the shelves gathering dust. Why? No WD this month. Not a single copy. No one knows how to play the new models, so no one is buying them. Good thing they're a model company first...

I wonder would it be possible to leave out the pilot and cover up the cockpit.

easy. fill up the cockpit , sculpt a few more vertebrae on if you feel up to it and integrate one of the canoptek wraith or spyder heads or whatever (of which I believe you get plenty) to the front of it all. I'd say it'd take one serious layer of putty, perhaps an hour of work.
...which you'll save right back on not painting the pilot.

Or just cut a piece of thin plasticard and smooth the edges down with green stuff.
For a "head" i would think the sensor cluster built into the fron of the model woudl suffice.

Cartainly wouldn't filer the entire cockpit. That would make it nose heavy and strain the stand so you could have problems.
I'd plasticard just below the rim of the cockpit and build up the basic shape with more plasticard, then skim filler over the top to get a smooth transition and continue the lines from the top hull.
Either use the sensor as supplied, or modified somewhat, maybe elongated.
That's the plan for mine, when I get them, anyway.

Presumably if the hull comes in 2 pieces (top and bottom halves) and the pilot is seaparate you mght be able to trace out or score a line on the plasticard through the cockpit gap before you glue it all together. That would save a lot of trial and error.

6 pieces actually 2x3 halves and 2 additional plates to add. The pilot is separate and easy to abandon.
Don't know why so many "IF's" are used, the sprues can be seen at the GW site..
Just cover the cockpit if you don't like to have the 'open' variant of the out-of-the-box pics.
