Just finished I am slaughter. Took me far longer than it should as its a pretty small book and could easily be finished off in a couple of evenings but I have been busy getting 10000 turkeys finished off for all you hungry folks for Christmas day!

Really enjoyed the book, I'm not a major fights scene / bolter porn fan so the political side was great with the different dynamic of the period it's written in making it all the more interesting! The 32nd mil has a completely different feel to both 30 and 40k, this change in pace was handled superbly by Dan.

The fight scenes were good too, never going to be my favourite bits but still enjoyable and exciting. All in all a good start, looking forward to the rest of the series.

I read -- and thoroughly enjoyed -- Portents, a Silver Skulls novel by Mamzel Cawkwell, was a e-book release some time ago, nice to have it in the "flesh", if you follow.

Currently on book 2 of the Ahriman series -- books 2 & 3 & Portent coming t'other week thanks to the free shipping.

Watch out, traitors: Garro is back.
The new novella starring The Horus Heresy's knight in not-very-shining armour will be with us before the year's end. It comes from the pen of none other than 'Flight of the Eisenstein' author James Swallow, and brings Garro's missions for the Sigillite to an epic conclusion (for the time being at least).

.. well ... I'm, very, pleased to get more Garro stuff, although one would be happier with an actual novel than a novella.

Still have to wait and see what we get.

...

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Not impressed that the Call of Archaon subscription series which was marketed as a savings just got undercut by 8 dollars in novel form the second the last issue came out.

I could understand it if there was a rather large gap between the series conclusion and the novels release but this feels rather like a bait and switch.

I'll be sure to wait for these series to conclude in the future.

In the BL email telling me about the Garro novella, there was also this snippet:
Black Library wrote:2016 is set to be a great year for all fans of the Horus Heresy. You can look forward to a packed lineup of new novels and stories as the epic series turns towards its final, inevitable conclusion. But before that, there's plenty to round out 2015: a calendar, new Garro and a special Christmas surprise.

That seems... oddly promising. Maybe we will even get some plot progression!

Gah, now this is tempting. I used to have a few of the previous calendars they did back then. This one certainly looks a whole lot sturdier.

Hoping that, worse case, its maybe been delayed to be released alongside the rumoured DW board game next year.

.. but that's entirely speculation on my part.

Might be some changes to the way BL work anyway it seems :

from Mr Thorpe

Given ongoing/ forthcoming structural changes, that's not going to be quite the same thing in the future. While it's going to take some time for everything to shake out again, the GW Publications bit will be concentrated on main releases and support (so the kind of thing we're mostly seeing at the moment) while BL will be returning to a more 'deepen, broaden the worlds based on the miniatures games' sort of approach. How or if this will affect scheduling, branding, etc, I have no idea.

I'm actually a little depressed to hear they're finally returning BL to the role it found its initial success in and which produced so many rich interesting stories, just in time for it to make no difference to whether the series' and locations I wanted more of(a conclusion to the Marienburg novels, more Brunner and Thulmann, some new Gotrek & Felix-style adventure novels, more Chaos & Dwarf material etc etc) will get more attention.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks
-----
"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

That would be great news if they manage to wrap it up by next Christmas. A little weirdly timed considering GW have just starting making plastics for the Heresy.

I wonder what they'll do to the final book in the series to make it extra specially limited edition? I'm guessing they'll do a Horus themed one and an Emperor themed one, make collectors buy it twice.

Well, I wouldn't be that optimistic, it says 'turning towards' not reaching the final conclusion, but it seems it will be getting close at least. I would expect at least a trilogy dedicated to just the siege of Terra though- one for the initial stages as Horus takes the outer system, one for the space battles lifting the blockade on Mars and taking Earth's orbit and the moon, and then the siege itself and the final conclusion we all know is coming...
Kind of mirroring the original trilogy that kicked it all off to be honest.

I should imagine that the approach to terra will be a long drawn out affair as well as the actual siege.

I cannot see them ending it in the next two or three years.

I quite like the fleshing out of the story, after all we know how the story ends for the most part, there have not been many of the main books that I have disliked much really, although I am easily pleased where primarchs are concerned !
Personally I am looking forward to hearing more about what happened to Russ and the sixth.

Really wanted a copy of that calender for my wall too, but as usual by the time i got myself home they have all gone.

Yes, but by reading his review, they'd then know they suck!

That and having to wade through tedious releases of the hardback and other expensive versions of stories before being able to get the paperback, which by then you'll already have likely forgotten about whatever book you were interested in.

Probably a super-special limited edition book that you could only buy between the hours of 10:15am and 10:20am, but only at Warhammer World and only on one Sunday a year and that specific Sunday isn't advertised beforehand.

Yeah once the multiple formats, exclusivity, only during a full moon, ebay seller bait style releases began , I gave up. Hardback before softback was fine, that's an established trend. Novellas are ridiculous and before would have simply been a compilation. The story is so disjointed and spread out with snippets hidden in so e titles I'll have to wait years for to get a regular release that it's hopeless.

No, either there's a mistake on the website (perish the thought) or they haven't published it yet. All the numbered books in the series are novels or anthologies, available in the 9 month long issue of hardback/Trade paperback/proper paperback. Ebooks, novella's and limited editions never feature in the numbered series.

Well, that was until 'book' 34, Pharos, which has now completely screwed everything up. Well done BL, you couldn't organise an piss-up in a brewery.
