Sorry for the long time away. Yes, it was due to family crap. Before I get to the German-style Feast we had on Saturday, I shall let you in on the dissapointment that is the bottles...

The drilling did not work like I thought it would. the drill just made a hole, and scarred the inside of the bottle, and did not make it look hollow like I had hoped it would. I'm sure if I could somehow polish the inside it would look better, but I don't have anything that small that I can use to polish it. It might look better if filled with a colored resin, so I haven't given up hope, just very dissapointed in the current experiment. Also, at this scale, it is very hard to keep the drill bit centered in the bottle. The one I did was very off cerenter, and looks odd from the side.

I will continue to try this, while I am making more "master" bottles so I can make my large-capacity bottle mold.

I'm also wondering if I can inject colored clear resin into semi-cured clear resin bottles...would that look better? I can also try making them hollow, but that will be also be very difficult at this scale. Many options to try though. I have not given up!

Now, on to the German food! [CAUTION: THE FOLLOWING PICTURES MAY CAUSE SEVERE HUNGER PANGS AND/OR UNCONTROLLED DROOLING. CLICK ON THE SPOILER BUTTON AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.]
Spoiler:

Cucumber salad, or Gurkensalat:

Recipe found here:

Spaetzle being sauteed:

and with cheese melted on top:

Here is where I got the recipe...it was good, but I will severely cut back on the nutmeg next time. It was a bit over powering.
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/german-spaetzle-dumplings/

And here are some pics of the Jagerschnitzel cooking:

And the Mushrooms and Onions for the sauce:

Recipe found here:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/jagerschnitzel/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=jagerschnitzel&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Recipe

And the whole thing together:

It was amazing! Even my wife liked the sauce and she hates gravy-like sauces!

I will definately make it again. I also encourage any of you to try it. It's kind of time consuming, but well worth it. Oh, and investing in some sort of Spaetzel Press or something to make noodles would be a good idea!

I apologise if any water damage has occured to your keyboards, but I warned you!

The recipe for the Spaetzle said to puch the dough through a large holed sieve, but that didn't work very well. My hands were killing me after wards.

tipios wrote:Could you cast them with a metal pin going through them?

That might be possible. But not in the the current mold configuration, I'll have to do it for the next mold. Yeah, I think it's possible. Thanks!

*Edit*

I missed your post before Dave, sorry about that. I still have some experimentation to do with the bottles before I pack it in.

I have given Tipios' suggestion some thought and I might be able to have a second "inner" mold to make the cast hollow, and then have a second, tinted resin poured inside the "shell". Again, this is just theory, it might not work in practice.

i see you went into this project rather honorably... making your own self made spätzle...that is certainly a deed worth mentioning in the history of cooking! something i have to try on my own too... one of these days...but as you said... with out proper tools it is even harder... tho the real spätzle cooks do this just with a knife on a board....personally i like my spätzle without the cheese topping but as i said...pure personal taste...

the whole meal looks rather tasty... and i am now lucky to habe a tasty snack at hand atm to compensate

as for the bottles issue... well not to sound too cheesy here but i had my doubts about the drilling issue... the idea of the pinned bottle casting idea sounds good... but as you stated...needs a complete different setup...i still cross my fingers for you to get this solved tho!

Before you give up on the drilling, take some Min-Wax clear Polyurethane finish (you know, its for making wood floors glossy and protecting the wood, but the sort that has no stain in it) and dip the drilled bottle in it, then let it cure for 48 hours. The dip is self leveling, and glossy smooth - so if you remember your physical science light passes through with minimal distortion making it nice and clear. I use this on all my canopies for models - it and future floor wax have been used by scale military airplane modelers for years.

The other option is rolling some 1000 grit sandpaper into a tiny tube and use that to polish the inside... but so long as the inside isn't chunk-tacularly marred, the polyurethane dip should hopefully do the trick.

If you have a clear part that's on a model that needs to be dullcoated, no problems - the polyurethane can be painted on after dullcoat with a small brush to restore the gloss and hence the clear properties. I also use it for radar screens, water, and lenses.

EDIT: Oh yeah, when you dip it, make sure you shake it out so that the dip doesn't fill in the hole you drilled completely - less is more

Well, it's not like I can go to the store to buy spätzle. (I don't have ä on my keyboard, I had to copy yours!) And I am interested in the cutting of the spätzle on a board....mine was too sticky and doughy to cut like that. Maybe more flour next time? And there will be a next time, it was a hit. Well, my daughter didn't like the spätzle, but she tore into the Schnitzle!

On the bottles, I won't give up, but I have heard of some amazing indiviuals who have spent years getting a project done that they were passionate about. I hope these don't take that long, but who knows.

I'm hoping to get more done on the Female Heresy Investigator, and the Visored Skull helmet tonight. If I make significant progress, I'll post pics.

Lots of projects going on at the moment. I still have a Female Priest with Eviserator to get started on! To name but one project!

I should take a week off work and get some of these done....but I need all the vacation time I have saved. So that's out.

Oh, and I had left-overs for lunch today....just as good as before!

I've seen them make trophies and awards out of clear resin on "How It's Made" on the Science channel- They sand and scratch the clear completely up- then use a cotton buffing wheel to buff it out- it looks amazng.

it´s one of those meals that might get even better the second time... like a good made chilli...

as for the spätzle making... i am certain there are vids only as to how to make them with just a knife and a board... i have seen that from time to time in cooking shows... basically you just chop the noodle and let them imidiatly fall into the boiling water... at first they are to heavy but when "cured" they start to rise up again and then you can fish them out... it is timeconsuming to say the least...^^

Jacqualine tip sounds like a really good idea... at Jacqualine : if you have pics or more about this methode yoiu should really make an article here at the painting and modeling tutorials... working with clear materials is always quite chalenging for many...! the community would apreciate it!

It sounds like Rivels (not rivets) to me- an old family comfort food recipe- Just egg and flour mixed into dough, then roll little balls of it and drop them into the chicken broth..mmmm yumm-o! - That stuff DOES get better the next day, because it soaks up the chicken flavor.

actually from what i´ve heard you should not neglect the other parts of the chicken... you need a fat one for a good broth... even the neck of a chicken is very valuable... even tho not many of us would call it tasty looking... and for some mysterious reason my grnadpa used to look for chicken bums... he ate them ... i dunno why... a totally sane man otherwise...

@Vik
I've mostly been a lurker on Dakka for years... would have never started posting except I hooked up with Space Corsair on a project lol. Eventually I may do a project log or something since I'm about to start finally assembling my WWI style all female IG regiment - I'm just so terrible with computers and have to bug my wife every time I want to upload a picture since she is the only one that knows how to use the FTP client thingy. As for the clear canopies trick... my wife just dullcoated her three Eldar WASP Assault Walkers... and she hasn't gone back over the canopies with the Polyurethane yet... I'll ask her if its ok for me to take pictures to show the method.

Oh, and as for Gumbo - it and other Cajun foods are something that really needs a good chef to make it taste good. I'm lucky that I live in Georgia, and there is an award winning Louisiana chef's restaurant not too far... I can't afford to eat there often since its close to $50 a plate after you figure in a drink and tip... but goodness, its such good food that even a perennial cheap-skate like me thinks that its worth the price. Just the pre-meal cornbread is something I'd gladly pay GW prices for LOL

@RSJake
If the minwax doesn't work out, PM me and I may be able to make some suggestions about how to make things work - casting clear parts can be pretty tricky in general.
