I belive that what Dr. Lechter was attempting to convey was that since Clarices' father had comited suicide,due to whatever reasons & presures,she her self may also follow suit (crashing and burning) due to her obcessive nature,unless of course her mother was of a more stable nature.
At least that's what I got from it more or less.
