Also, as much as I appreciate the talent of the artist, I really hope someone tells her that Bones humanoids will never be that spindly or sharply detailed. Perhaps she could help Reaper avoid a lot of disappointment if she drew everyone a bit chunkier.
Well, they'll be spindly. And there will certainly be lots of unidentifiable blobs on them! But they won't look good.
Stick to what works in Bones reaper. Big monsters, and chunky dudes in helmets to obscure their noseless pseudo-faces. Keep detail low on man sized figures. Basic fur/plate/robes comes out OK. Straps, buckles filigree, and the usual crap Wayne Reynolds clutters up his designs with DON'T.

That's part of the problem with Bones.. They lump the big stuff that is appealing (to me) in the core set or an expansion set.. and pad it with stuff that has historically not done well in PVC. Then the individual add-ons are maaaaybe a dollar or 2 less than MSRP (and about what they'll be at discount). The only real "bargains" tend to be the absurdly large stuff that you have to build a new shelf for and start leveling players now.. so they'll be epic level by the time the big ass.. whatever.. ends up releasing. When Bones started, the market was different, the competition didn't even really exist, and e commerce had not really made it super easy to get fantasy PVC toys that are exactly the same quality as Bones (plus prepainted).. companies like Safari LTD, Shleich, Papo, etc are way more accessible now, companies like CMON and Monolith have redefined the standards for quality on cheap bulk minis, and Reaper has already repeated itself numerous times on what exactly they're producing through bones.
Yet somehow, they still think it's a good idea to release these tiny humanoids that just don't work at all. The designs for everything in this KS look great.. but sooo many people lose track of the fact that Bones just simply won't reproduce that.. save for the larger and/or simpler models.
Bones vs. Metal: Myself, I have the same dwarf in both metal and Bones I. I paint to advanced tabletop, and the results were pretty much the same (except for a mold line on the back of the miniature), particularly if you're going to use them for tabletop play. I doubt anyone who really will paint past advanced tabletop will be interested in the core set in the first place since there are *way* too many miniatures to paint in the core set, and $100 is better used to pick-and-choose miniatures for painting. I think anyone reading this thread, unfamiliar with Bones, and looking for miniatures to *play* with should go to their FLGS, slap on some brown liner (or other ink or paint to show the details), and see for themselves, particularly if they're not painting beyond advanced tabletop. I don't want anyone reading this thread to find out that these miniatures actually are suitable for them and miss out on miniatures that will not be offered like this again. Here's a thread on Reaper of an early Bones vs. its metal counterpart: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/47477-bathalian-bones-vs-metal-challenge/
Agreed. Bones are great for populating a table, and that is all that interests me. Well, that conversions, which they are admittedly not that great for, though they take greenstuff well. 90% of my bones issues went away when I started dullcoating them BEFORE painting.
I haven't had any trouble converting Bones minis or painting them. I'm also not the most discerning miniature critic, although I know what I like. Some Bones minis lack critical features, like noses or fingers or symmetric swords (when they are supposed to be), so prospective customers should be aware of that. Armored characters, dwarfs and "flat/old school" minis turn out much better in Bones than say, Juliette or the Bowie Knife Assassin.
I would point out both of these guys are from Bones III and do not suffer from the soft sculpt or soft plastic issues that previous series have had. Reaper HAS stepped up their game. I'm guessing that a lot of people haven't handled the newer stuff yet, so haven't seen the improvements.
I have to ask - is that real because I am quite amused and intrigued by the idea............

Hrm, wish I could snag that 'Not a Displacer Beast' on its own (which I know I probably can at retail), so far nothing is grabbing me just yet. The core seems good, but I don't need a couple hundred random minis, usually I just end up treating these campaigns as an early offer to get bits from their pending lineup, and aim for terrain or random bits like the weapon sprues.
Eh, there's still time left for things to grow, but I get the sense I might just end up snagging one figure or kit out of habit more than anything else (well, plus access to an limited edition pieces, if/when they show up). My existing minis collection already exceeds my general needs (and a painting backlog I may never catch up on), so it's not the quantity that draws me in, but snagging early a few choice bits like terrain or weapons or things in translucent bones.

I have painted that one and my recollection is that it is a lot better than it appears to be in plain white although I never could get the swords to stay straight for any great length of time though.
This was one of the miniatures from the Bones 1 campaign and as others have pointed out the learned a lot from the miniatures created in that campaign and have been putting that experience to good use.

I own both the actual metal Phase Kitty and the official D&D model (as well as the extremely large one from an earlier DDM set) and I'm not really a fan of the Reaper one to be honest. It's a bit on the small side and they gave it 4 legs instead of 6 and 4 tentacles instead of 2 to avoid IP infringement... If it's something you want and literally the only thing about this that's interesting to you, I would avoid the long wait and unwanted rest of set purchase and opt for the official model.

I mean, I'm not getting a full set (core or expansion) for one figure. I'd buy it at retail first. It was less bemoaning that one particular case, and more a matter that unlike KS2 (terrain) and KS3 (weapon sprues), nothing is really standing out for me.
Which is fine, I don't have to give them money, and they certainly aren't hurting for the $20 or whatever I usually chip in.
Just hoping that before the end they do drop some interesting stuff all the same. Maybe one large figure for a change and make my own enemy figure for one of my favourite board games. Hrm...

I feel you.. the oversized Grell boss thing does sit squarely in a role I have planned for a game I want to run.. but.. I'll be getting one in Massive Darkness here shortly. There's a few other odds and ends that are intriguing but almost all of it is buried behind a paywall/buy-in so I'll just live without for now. I've been going through all my fantasy miniatures and board games today (and painting up Black Plague finally!) and realized I've got waaaaay too much gak. When I sorted through 5 big rubbermaid containers of monsters trying to find the troll thing from BP only to realize it was in the actual box it came in on a shelf behind a bunch of other unopened things.. I was like "yeah.. too much"..
If that weren't the case.. I would probably be putting together a campaign featuring hill and fire giants..
Spending too much time in the SW thread. Seriously though, I like the resulpt but he is nowhere near as imposing as I would expect from someone with that title.

I was in that predicament with Reaper Bones 3 as I wanted the Behir and pretty much nothing else and it was only available as part of a larger expansion set. I don't regred the decision as it's an ok mini from the pics but I'm not a fan of the big one piece fill in base as it reminds me too much of the old Leviathan game models (not the WW1 naval floating ship game but the even older fantasy game).

We Munch for Macragge! FOR THE EMPRUH! Cheesesticks and Humus!
Still meh because I don't have enough terrain. Right now I'm basically in for 2 of each statue set and probably 2 tree's of despair. I was hoping for more. Especially ruins.
