I think part of the problem is that it's harder to design generic 3rd party sf figures than fantasy ones. While every generic fantasy world probably has an elf, dwarf, and titty demon, not every one will have an uplifted dinosaur, an elf in space, Mars Attacks brain guy, or half naked chick in a floating chair (unless it's Classic Star Trek). Reaper also gives its artists and sculptors leeway, so, over a period of several years (some Bones are based on existing metals), you get a variety of uniforms which aren't, well, uniform.
Here's the core set to scale. #16 is a tiefling that I've been waiting for since D&D 4e and, with #72, we get to see how big they -- er, she is.
@Jean - Yes, we listen to suggestions. about 80% of the project is set in stone. Another 15% or so is grabbed from a list of possible ideas - more ideas than can make it in, so if the crowd advocates for one of those many ideas more than for others, that one is chosen. Another handful are left relatively open, and we see if our sculptors are inspired by these ideas. In Bones 3 this led to the Froghemoth, plant monsters, and Hobgoblins, which were popular requests. With that in mind, we recommend advocating for models you’d like to see, and seeing which ones gain traction within the community, rather than statements like “don’t make ______”, because we won’t be removing anything from the existing plan, but we have space to add new things.
So Reaper adds some items based on backer input, which means not all the sculpts are done when the project starts. I know in the past, they had to replace one sculpt because they couldn't wait on a scultpor. So I guess that's part of the reason for the 1.5+ year wait. And, of course, Bones I and Bones II miniatures have been delivered or are available through retail, so you could always paint them while you're waiting. That's what I'd be doing if it wasn't for all these *other* miniatures I have to paint...!
As for WizKids, if they ever run a KS, I'm in trouble!

I call bull on this.. Why?
Because look at the core set for the first 3 bones. Most were heroes.. and most of those were human or humanoid. Sci-Fi is just as easy to predict and they have even done exactly this.. Humans and humanoids in near future with near-future weapons.. AND.. deep future power armor ray guns etc.. Look at their bad guys.. many are undead and humans and humanoids.. Guess what works in sci-fi too??? Ding ding..
The next low hanging fruit.. mutants. Mutants are variations of humanoids.. and are extremely useful.
Next up.. demons.. hey.. guess what's all over the place in sci-fi too!
Brutes like Orcs would be an easy finisher.
Off of these things they could take a huge chunk of the existing characters, change only the garb and equipment and boom.. it's sci-fi. I'm not saying just sculpt over the existing models, I'm just saying that re-concepting them off of the ones already in place would be a piece of cake.
Another reason I call bull is because if it didn't work.. then Mantic wouldn't really exist (maybe for fantasy... but possibly not), as would many other companies that are fringe.
Past that, Reaper has been making not-D&D figures for a long time. They have absolutely no approval to do that. So if they started making Space Ogres with Ripping Guns, WW2 Halfling Snipers, Space Elf Blade Warriors, etc etc.. that isn't any different from them doing knockoffs of Beholders, Owl Bears, Displacer Beasts, Rust Monsters, Hook Horrors, etc..
Bottom line is, Reaper could court the sci-fi market they just have no desire to do so. They have said exactly that in the past. Exactly what their motivation is for the sci-fi in this KS and what it entails.. I dunno. Do I hope they're changing their mind and are going to start making not-Shadowrun, not-Star Wars, Battletech style pilots and mecha, not- 40k, and possibly Starfinder licensed stuff? Well.. all of that would be amazingly cool but we won't know until we've seen how all of this unfolds.

Just came back to this thread, after being away for a few days. So this might be old news but I need to get this off my chest.
I'm so disappointed by the Kobolds. It's just more mini's of the old school dog face kobolds. Witch it seems every Miniatures manufacture who does Kobolds do.
It drives me crazy how no minatures manufacture makes the Tiny Lizard men style kobolds that you see in modern D&D/pathfinder and in pop-culture. Like, if you search Kobold in Google almost all the results are the Tiny Lizardmen Kobolds. I was hopeing the Kobold Goal was going to give us new-school kobolds.
That as the only goal that I was excited to see, and now I've been disappointed. :<

Bones 2 & 3 I was in for an assortment of terrain bits, LE figures, and weapons, respectively mixed.
Nothing so far beyond a $1 placeholder, I'm sure there'll be more to entice a few bucks out of me, but so far it's all about the core (as is often the case, admittedly). Hopefully the next week or two starts sparking some interest.

Are the Wrath of Ashardalon and Castle Ravenloft Kobolds (D&D boardgame) not the type of thing you're looking for? To me they look like the little lizard ones.. I bought all the D&D boardgames (haven't gotten the Giant one yet) because the minis tend to be Monster Manual accurate for whatever edition is out when it's produced.. The quality has fallen off a bit lately but if you're considering Bones I'm thinking that's not a major concern..

I just wish they would do more terrain and giant sized things which is where bones really shines, rather than have the split be 70% human sized things that turn out with reliably droopy weapons and soft details.
I have boiled and boiled, and the spears and swords still manage to head south...
On the other hand, the terrain has been great value and seems very rugged. Same with the ogres I got from KS3.

It's funny you say that because I think I've seen far more lizard-like Kobolds then dog-faced ones! These ones are kind of strange - they look like they went for a cross between old and new style - they have tails and long snouts and horns. They look kind of pudgy though.
All of the old D&D miniatures and Pathfinder miniature kobolds have a very distinct lizard/dragon look to them. Go to Miniature Market and just search Kobold and you'll see lots of examples. I can see how Repear might look at the market and see how Wizkids is doing prepainted and unpainted kobolods in the new style and want to make these more retro styled kobolds as a counter-offering.

Reaper has a tendency towards old style for many things. If I were to guess, it would be due to a lower chance of having the design challenged as IP-infringement.. but who knows..

It depends. Familiars are usually grouped together, but some animals are large enough to sell on their own. Either way, you're probably looking at min $3 to max $7 for that pug.

I've heard that whips hurt a lot more when they bend around one's body instead of just impacting like a switch...
I prefer the previous dragon turtle. It looked more like a dragon with some turtle DNA, whereas this one was clearly a turtle bitten by a radiomantic dragon. The griffon is all aces.

A lot of the lines people are sujesting are other blind box mini, part of box games, ECT. They also have low sculpt counts. Sometimes the sculpt style look super different between sculpts in the same lines let alone across lines.
It's hard to build a nice looking frost grave war band with the prepaint lines.

Waiting for terrain as well. Reaper has plenty of add-ons, so if they don't get your money with one, they'll take it with another. More backers seem to be passing on the core, but anyone pledging for the core only and no add-ons?
Wyvern unlocked!
Fun Fact: "@Jason Emery - in the past, wounded, maimed, and haggard heroes have sold exceptionally poorly. Our theory is that it's the reason most fantasy avatars are "fit" and "greek human ideal or godlike" physique. In fantasy, people tend to want to be the "best" version of themselves/their idealized hero character. It's one reason we often get heat for lack of variety in our models physique - we tend towards the idealized shapes, which doesn't often include rubenesque women and men, paunches, dad-bods, or other body types. While we certainly do not believe that "good" and "heroic" equate to "physically fit", the fanbase, by and large (and it's VERY evident from sales patterns) doesn't tend to buy alternative body types - including physical disabilities and obesity."
Reaper Ron posted this teaser preview with terrain, tentacle thing?, dragon, small terrain in the back?...

The previous one was a Dragon (terrestrial) Tortoise, this one is a Dragon (sea) Turtle
