I just finished warriors of ultramar and all I can say is WOW. How can anyone expect to beat nids when there are millions of them and they adapt in a matter of minutes?

That's kind of the point with Tyranids. Their overwhelming numbers are pretty much going to scour the galaxy of life.
Warriors of Ultramar was a good book. The next book in the series is even better.
If you're looking for tactics, better jerry-rigging of explosives on giant gas processing stations thrown at hive ships might be effective. Oh, and using some sort of 40'th millenium technology other than man power to re-arm the nova-cannon in a time faster than 30 minutes.

i think that tyranids are the serious END ALL in this game. if nothing else can get you, a brewing hive fleet will pop in and get you.

Same as Chaos, same as orks really. The nids are just another giant threat to all life in the galaxy. I think the main thing about nids is that since they are so incredibly vast they may have that 1,000,000 front war thing going on where there focus is never entirely unified. We really only see one or two hive fleets at a time. Just like how people will always be messed up in the head and propagating Choas and Orks being the roaches (used with love ) of the galaxy Nids will never be eradicated.
What you expected the wars to end?

Chaos could probably take on the 'nids. In Storm of Iron, Iron Warriors had used some modified version of the Oblit virus and psychers to take over tyranid transport ships.

On the other hand. At M41 the Imperium may have already seen the vanguard of the Nid menace. The theory that this is just the tip of the beast is a hypothesis from one inquisitor. There will still be plenty of fragment fleets floating around, but we have no assurance that they are the tip.

Orks don't "live"? Do they not count as life in the galaxy?

Definitely do, it's an enjoyable 200 page description of a battle. The Diers Ire is brought to the surface on an enslaved Tyranid transport creature.

Orks still outnumber nids. Nids have the advantage of coordinating via the hive mind, and there may only be one supreme nid behind it all. However if they were to gather all their forces at once against all the orks (impossible) orks would outnumber them so badly the outcome would be pre determined. But man imagine the shouts of waagh that would go up!

Speaking of a nice Waaagh...
Read Fifteen Hours by Mitchel Scanlon if you haven't. Quite a nice portrayel of a Guard vs. Ork battle.
So far, out of the Black Library, it is my favorite representation of Orks. I haven't read them all yet though

In Storm of Iron, the Iron Warriors use a Norn Queen that they somehow infected with the oblit virus. She is used to transport titans to the planet for battle.

Darrian I did not think the captured Nid ship was specified. I could be wrong though. interesting Captain Chaos Honsou, when listing enemies of man (and thus needing proper IW guidance) listed Nids.

daamn I need to read that one again
I can't imagine a universe without either Orks or Nids.

It's possible the nids could surround everything, coming in from more than one side ... eventually.

The nid ship is definately in Storm of Iron.
I haven't read 15 hours. The only depiction of orks I've read is a brief battle on ice against them mention in one of the Gaunts Ghost novels.

You should be able to stop Tyranids in space.
They are all scary once they are planetside, because frankly they usually overwhelm a planet and win through attition.
Last time I checked, they couldn't really devour resources and spawn more ships during space combat.
Now of course, the Imperium isn't well organised enough to do it, but if they got their act together I'm sure they could.

Necrons could do it. The most recent fluff-wise nid invasion purposefully avoids them, probably because they have no biomass to convert and a C'Tan could go to town harvesting whole sections of the fleet. Of course that outcome isn't much better for anybody either.

biomass means minerals too!
let's not even touch on carbon.
planetary mass is lowered when the tyranids leave, not simply lacking of water and air.

One section of all the fluf that hasn't been exposed very much at all is the "positive warp."
It's been hinted at in the Gaunt's Ghosts series, and maybe somewhere else I'm forgetting.
Anyways, I think there are other factors in considering how this would all play out...
Necrons all rising up, Nids circling in, Humans possibly allying with Tau and Eldar, Orks going nutz cuz o so much WWwwwwAAaaRRrrrrr!
Yeah... an eternity of war...

Special unit Hippies
special rules:
Give piece a chance
Hippies are known for their song and dance routines. When this ability is used roll a d6 for each enemy unit in 12'. on a 3+ they choose love, not war and join in the peace rally. Units that fail the test (even orks tyranids and necrons) mus lay down arms, join the hippie rally and count as destroyed for VP.
Befuddled
Hippies have a long standing tradition of substance abuse. During their movement phase roll a scatter die and 2d6 to determine their movement.
College Student
Hippies are not official funded by any government source. Before the game begins roll a d6. The hippie mob will only remain on board for that many turns before getting bored and moving on to a new cause. (saving tyranids from extinction, free love, selling out ect)
