Absolutely! It's fantastic! GS is something I need to sit down and practice one day.

Tell me about it, only just starting to get to grips with it myself. I have started to leave it to harden slightly before I use it, otherwise its too tacky and I make a mess. Aside from tat I'm pretty much a novice but I'm enjoying the learning curve!

I took a class last year at GenCon, we did ropes and chains and some other simple things. I just need to put in the effort and patience to learn.

Dude, don't be modest, that is pure talent right there. Every time I've tried green stuff I get fingerprints all over what I make. Somebody once told be to use Vaseline on my fingers while I sculpt so it didn't stick. My if caught me going downstairs later that night with a jar of Vaseline. I'm never going to live that down .

@ Dsteingass cool a class!? That would be awesome, there must be an equivalent somewhere this side of the pond. I should explore that side of things more. I sometimes wonder why I have never gone to warhammer world considering it is only 3 hours up the road. Mind you in the UK that counts as a land far far away

@Theophony haha not trying to be overly modest dude I have just literally just started trying my hand at this level of conversion. If you look closely you can see a big old thumb print on the bottom tentacle but I am cutting it off tomorrow anyway. I tend to jus have a jar of water close by to stop it sticking to me or even worse a quick lick of the thumb pad has the same effect. As I said if you let it harden for an hour or so thumb prints seem to be less of an issue

Ps who's being modest themselves, I love your blog!

I worked out very quickly today that I lack the skill required to GS cloth. It's fold lines and contours are at present a mystery to me. What I do know how to do though is hack away at bits of plastic...

More W.I.P

I am trying to create a real idea of movement, to make it seem as though the tentacles have come shooting out like a frogs tongue from some dark recess and that the force of this movement has blown the cloak wide open. It is going to be mission to smooth the separate parts together but you get the general idea. I now have to work out whether to arm him with a pistol, basic weapon or metal bar in his other hand, what ever it is it has to balance him out. Thoughts guys?

Haha, first thought I had was a guy in a tattered trench coat coming up to flash someone and all the tentacles coming out. Shows you where my mind wanders. Yes, I look at the pics first then read the text to see if the artist and I were thinking the same. So yeah, the tentacles shooting out did get conveyed.

And because I like to beat jokes into the ground.... Legos.

I am still thinking of adding another tentacle holding a pistol but not sure if this would be OTT

@Vik - do not be fooled, its almost all plastic parts coated in a layer of liquid GS to tie it together. but yes I am really pleased with the cloak even if it is all cheap parlour tricks.

i had the slight suspicion that this might be indeed LGS... but....but... it still looks like a hyde and jekyll cape... so you still have me oggling over that artful victorian tattered cloth

hmmm... i think that adding a pistol in a tentacle somehow just doesn´t fit the bill... pulling the trigger... no i don´t think that is feasable... cool...maybe... but just a bit too anime for me

I agree! LGS is marketed for "filling small cracks" but the gak has a LOT more potential!
Also, Valejo plastic putty is the same stuff, but cheaper...and..white..instead of green

So am I right in thinking the creases on the back of the cloak is part of the original design then ?

Either way great mini I just cant get over that tentacle craziness you have given me new hope in attempting some GS work I keep sidelining

@ Dsteingass - cheers for the advice I will look into the other product choices. I need to apply another coat of LGS it anooys me that as it dries it depresses and does not fill as much as when wet.

@neil101 - Hi Neil, thanks mate, I am a big fan of your work so high praise indeed!

@Inmygravenimage - steal away bud, chuffed that I have managed to do something that gives someone else an idea

@LDD - so the cloak is made out of a chaos warrior back, two arms of the corpse cart necromancer and the hood from a empire archer. All the folds are plastic (I cant make folds). I sheved down the backs of the parts so they were thinner and hacked large chunks out of the back and legs of the miniature. Then i glued the seperate sections in place slavered them at some points with plastic glue to make them melt together, and then covered them in a layer of LGS to hide any cracks and bumps. It was all done on the fly so I am sure there are more technically sound ways of achieving the same thing. I am now just trying to decide on a colour scheme. I may paint him in washes like my chaos spawn from earlier in the blog

That's really interesting; I'm going to try it on sheet styrene I think. More generally, that might be an interesting way of doing cloaks (LGS over very thin styrene, that is). I'll let you know, might even threadjack

Finished.

I can't lie, I didn't enjoy painting this miniature as much as others recently. The cloak and tentacles was a lot of blood sweat and tears. It took me a long time to work out how to blend from the skin (especially on the face) into the mutation and then to blend from a bright colour to a vary dark tone over a variety of lengths of tentacle, whether I should blend them all to the same point or if they should get darker the longer they grow. I got them to a place I was just about happy with, then I added the spots... I think I regret this decision as there was a smoothness to them that I enjoyed which is lost now. It's too late now though. Secondly I did the eyes again and again and again. Adding pupils, taking them out, adding them again. I have settled on plain whites for now but could change it up again. Anyway here he is, everybody out there please feel free to give me your thoughts. I am not happy with my painting ability compared to my conversion skill so if anyone can see any mistakes I'm making or stuff I should be adding please let me know, harsh as you want I won't take offence.

hmmm... that is a tough one...

the details all look good... but somehow the combination i am not really sold on...

tentacles are expertly sculpted but i fear the scheme for them is also a bit lacking...

the underside of the mini... namley the pants and shoes look a biot too boring... but then you painted that canister in a very bright way...

i think it all doesn´t work as planned together....sorry mate...

you are a very good painter... i bet you can do better than this one... in fact you already have with the other minis you presented to us....

I'd say brighten the green way up... then dull it down to "diseased" gradually until you find the right balance with the purple. The purple looks perfect IMHO.

@Dsteingass - Thanks you bud why couldn't I see that, will get on it.

I also need to redo the club as the rust is far too spotty and uniform rather than patchy

Spotty rust is just from where he didn't clean the brains off the club before returning to the sea. Looks excellent, but I think Dave struck the rivet on the head with the colors.

Can I jump in here with a bit of an extreme alteration, what I would do personally is take the flesh tone partially down the tentacles, then merge it into the purple tone darkening towards to the end.

I hope that helps some
