Rumors say the starter box will the Space Marines (HURR!) and Orkses. 10 marines, 5 termis and commander. Orkses Boyz, 3 Deth Coptors and a warboss.

Yay for Orkses, yawn for the Space Marines (HURR!)

What would you put in there?

Me... the orkses are fine. But I'd throw in 20-30 IG. Use jes Goodwin's trenchcoat design, one peice bodies to save money, seperate heads. And an IG jeep too.

IG vs Orkses is just a more fun game since y'know, they can actually hurt each other.

I would put in Eldar (10 guardians w/ platform + Warlock and Wave Serpent and 5 Fire Dragons) vs. more Eldar (9 Jetbikes w/ 3 Shuri-cannons + Jetbike Warlock and a Fire Prism).

I need more stuff for Apoc. 6000 pts. + titans isn't enough.

The answer is so obvious, it's sickening. It would make an interesting box set, provide a huge boost to the army, and finally add some new models to the range:

Orks vs. Sisters of Battle!

You could include ~30 orks, 10 battle sisters, 5 seraphim and a cannoness. Throw in an inquisitor as an objective and some rubble terrain, and you've got a fun box.

If you could get a sisters squad plus seraphim for under $30, does anybody think we wouldn't see a run on Witchhunter armies?

Well, SM (hurr!) are a given. There's no getting away from that. But SM vs Chaos is much more iconically GW to my eyes.

Personally Space Orks are and always have been a stupid concept. Just banal fantasy rip-off and completely and moronically, unoriginal. I know lots of people like them, but I personally think they're crap.

If it was personal preference from someone completely outside the loop (which regarding 40k I pretty much am these days) I'd like to see SM vs Tau or maybe Eldar (which I know are Elves in Space, but the Eldar imagery is much further removed from Fantasy than Orks are, and works much better). Aesthetically its just a much more appealing deal.

Just my 2p.

IF, 5th edition fixes 4th's rules problems without introducing a shedload more, and IF the models in the new box are 1/2 decent, I could be persuaded to buy the new box, but if I do, I'll be selling off the dumb-looking Space Orks!

No one's up for Kroot Mercs vs genestealer cultists?

Genestealer Cultists, yes, Kroot, no.

I think they need to keep the "human element" but it's time to veer away from the SM's! Whether it be Guard or Inquisition, at least it's different. Then throw in the Tau to get all the anime kids interested. I could probably talk myself into painting up some Tau... at least before selling them off,

If it's for-tee-kay, it's going to be SM vs. whoever. Orks being back is a good sign (though BFM wasn't bad either). That's simply the nature of the game. And let's face it: lots of people get into this game because of Space Marines (HURR!). It's a starter set for newbies; that old-timers will buy a quadrillion googleplex of these things to 'round off some old projects' (like they did with BFSP & BFM) is just the cherry on top.

Now, if you want to ask the question of what a starter box should look like from the ground up, that's a different can o' monkeys.

Let's start with:
1. skirmish rules! Real rules for playing 10-15 figures or less per side, with character/team development, a starter campaign, some scenarios, and all the other stuff you want in a skirmish rules set (BFM came the closest to this but missed the mark by THAT much). Oh, and stats and points to keep playing said skirmish rules.
2. Miniatures! Enough figs to have 10-15 figs per side. Race is irrelevant (you can have kroot vs. necrons for all I care), though Guard vs. orks probably makes the most sense.
2a. (and probably the most controversial): prepainted plastics a la AT-43. Let's face it: with few exceptions, people who start out in the game take 20 years to paint their first figs, at which point they've already amassed a small closet full of junk that are also primer-black/white or unpainted/barely painted. Why not have your first figs be prepainted, and then you can repaint them as you build the armies up (and you paint your new figs), or just stick with what you've got? Again, we're talking about a starter set, not a way to get 10000 points of grots for your Apocalypse game, nor are we talking about having the whole line go prepainted, but if you want fresh blood, prepainted is the way to go.
3. pocket rulebook. Wanna play with the big boys? Here's how! Include some rules on how to scale up from the smaller skirmish game to platoon level and eventually to 2000 points.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I think Guard with SM Allies vs. Orks or Sisters vs. LatD would be my top picks. The first because it is doable, the second because it would be a tiny dream.

Guard:
HQ unit with Sentinel, Heavy weapons bit.
20 guardsmen with... stuff. I dunno, AC, LC, PG and GL?
5 man Marine squad with flamer, or plasma? and power fist.
Hell Hound.

Orks
Lots of orks.

I think it would be good to mix the two Imperial types to sort of give players a taste of both, and IG are just cool.

Sisters... I just want plastic Sisters SO hard. Plus LatD is kick butt. Make a plastic Exorcist or Penitent Engine kit, and I would be in heaven.

Change out the Chimera for a pair of Sentinels and that would be a great starter.

I'd like to see Guard vs Nids for 6th Edition. Both of these are hordes and could really use the price break from being in the boxed set.

monopose trenchcoat Guard
5 IG command
2x 10 IG squad
1 Sentinel

Nids
3 Warriors
30 Gaunts
1 Zoanthrope

8-pot paint set (black, brown, red, yellow, green, blue, white boltgun) with a brush

mini rulebook
Skirmish scenario book

$10 coupon for battalion box

10 Space Marines + Inquisition allies vs LatD. pure win.

includes say 16 guardsmen (enough for almost two squads, the other four were really evil looking guys) that can be painted to be really mean looking Cadians. And two sentinels.

I would have thought it would be SM vs the first codex release for 5th ed.

They did it with 3rd and 4th ed so why not 5th?

thinking of which, they could have put Necrons in there. Good chance to make plastic Immortals. Of course they would also have to include the green rod things.

Orks vs. Orks. It's fluffy and gets a lot of people starting what should be 40k's most fielded race.

Or we go with Apocalypse only armies. Lost and the Damned vs. 13th Company. This means the kiddies will have to buy an extra 2500 points before they can even use these models!
