Shapeways uses 3D printers to print out models of whatever 3D files you send them, for a fee. There is an option to put what you have uploded up for sale to the public, that is why there are all sorts of items for sale there.

Once I get the shotguns back, and make sure they look good, I'll most likely put them up for sale there as well as on my website. Mine will most likely be cheaper, but it's an option.

This is one helluva new set of tools you have here Jake! Exciting things are just beginning to happen!

Thanks Dave! Yes, I have big plans for the War Walker now! Like at least 3 options for a cockpit interior! A steampunk one, with levers and stuff like your walker, a more modern/futuristc one, and one with the pilot "incorporated into the machinery, dreadnought style.

I'm excited to see where this program takes me, but I will not be giving up the hand sculpting of models. This is mostly for the weapons and machines that need a cleaner line than I can produce by hand. Heck, if I have the walker printed, I don't have to worry about how it will mold, it will probalby be cheaper to have it printed anyway. And I can have pipes and cables and wires in places I couldn't with making resin casts! I just have to worry about how it will be painted. I can't leave impossible to paint...that would look bad.

@ Vik, you should look into it! Blender is a free program, and it's not TOO difficult to learn.

what is with rights? when you design something on blender and then send it to shapeways...are you then free to cast the stuff for selling it later? one has to ask these questions...

From what I read, it is your IP, and as such it is your to do with as you wish. They make you agree that the image you are printing is your IP, and not someone else's. Besides, they are just printing it, you still have the copy rights for the image.

Just to keep people from being confused- it's not IP, precisely. It's Copyright, which covers anything artistic. Trademark is for a name or logo that's being used to sell things, and Patent is for working designs or processes. There's some overlap, but the important thing is this:

Copyright, at least in the US, is automatic. As soon as you've sketched an idea/design out, that design or idea is yours. Once you've cast it, it's yours in the realm of 3 dimensions as well (it's arguable about before then, but just check out the Chapterhouse lawsuit for more detail). Nobody else in the world is allowed to claim that as their own, and have to have your permission to use it in any way. It works differently, however, in different countries; but the most important thing is the Berne Convention, which makes it so that any country involved (which is pretty much all of them) must treat copyright according to how it would be treated in the country of origin.


tl:dr, Jake hasn't sold the copyright to anything, so he decides who can sell it and how it's sold.

Just wanted to let you all know I'm still working on stuff, just doesn't seem to be a lot of free time lately. Well, there was some free time, but I was doing other things.

I am still working on the chainblade for the Priestess, and the energy blade for the tech priest, see below for WIP shots.

I am having the War Hammer shown below printed currently.

The War Hammer, the Machinegun and the Shotgun are all being printed, but the smaller details like the rivets and tubes don't seem to be able to be printed, they don't seem to come through in the file. Well, this was a test run aynway, so maybe I can fix the glitch, and get them printed up right, but I may just add the details myself when I get them. We'll see.

The printing should be done on or before the 5th of July. That is what Shapeways said at least. So some time after that I should have them.

Vik, it's actaully not a Light Saber exactly, it's a "sollex energy blade" used by tech priests or some such. It's just "like" a light saber.

I'm not even sure it will print out if it is that thin, so we'll see. It will be a while before I have it printed, I want to see how the first batch turns out.

well why not only make the hilt? after all you could put a nail of your own need into it and have a nice lightsaber or even a whiplash then?

True. The hilt will still look pretty good. I could use a toothpick even!

Like Jake said, it's not a true lightsaber, it's more like a beam saber from gundam, or a very powerful plasma torch.

Thanks gendoikari, and I Vik, I would most likely just model the blade "around" a toothpick, and use that to make a mold, and then make the blade out of blue tinted clear resin.

But yeah, I can still get the hilt printed from Shapeways.
