Thinking about starting an imperial fists army, but every try I have had with yellow has been a disaster.

What are some good tricks to an easy nice bright yellow? Is it possible to get in two coats? Is black a bad undercoat choice when painting yellow?

Really clueless when it comes to painting yellow.

All I know is that you should base-coat with white and work up the layers for a bright even yellow base coat. Much more than two coats.

I avoid painting yellow where-ever humanly possible.

I learned a trick painting yellows a few years ago
it involves Yellow ink, so I don't know how feasible that will be for you.

ok
1-prime white
2-coat thinly everywhere you want yellow in Elf Flesh
3-Give the elf flesh a wash of yellow ink

then, you can highlight up with sunburst / bad moon / white to get your highlights

this might (not too sure) work substituting the yellow ink with a thin golden yellow, but I haven't tried it.

Anyone have good results with the new basecoat yellow from GW? Havent heard any feedback on it, was wondering if it could cut out some steps for me.

The foundation yellow is exactly the same as the mustard yellow color GW already makes. I've tried it and it's pretty worthless since the original yellow can cover just as well.

Note: the foundation yellow is pretty dark and you will have to add another good 5-10 layers of bright yellow on top.

I use the Reaper Master Series Yellow Triad. I recommend sticking with white primer. Yellow over black will work but require many coats.

There is no easy way to paint yellow with GW paints.
Vallejo paints are almost as hard.

Start with white
Many layers +++
Yellow ink/wash as you see fit.
Get grey hairs as you then mess up your beautiful yellow with other colours on the mini.

I would say use an air brush with iyanden darksun foundatation paint (this is after priming)

So yellow is really that hard? I can´t remember this kind of trouble when I did my Imperial Fists... :S

However, the yellow I used at the time was quite dry, not sure if that makes a difference. When I get back home I´ll try and post some pics of my IF to show you guys.

Pretty sure they were White Prime -> two layers -> shading and highlights. Nothing too fancy, just tabletop minis.

For my Imperial Fists I pretty much just put on 5 coats of sunburst yellow. (and I'm never painting a yellow army again)

Yellow is actually very easy.... if you know the trick. Start with a good basecoast of orange (whatever variety you like best), then drybrush/ highlight with white, then wash with yellow ink. Move on to next color/model.

I start from orange, and blend through to a bright yellow over a white primer coat.

Why not just spray-prime the minis yellow (they're Imperial Fists, it's not as if there will be much other colors or skin showing) and build up highlights and shadows from that?

I just painted a Lamenters Marine at the weekend (original chapter colour was bright yellow). I undercoated black then put on foundation Iyanden Darksun followed by 2 coats of Golden yellow, then an orange wash over highlighted with Sunburst yellow and then further highlight of white. Came out looking ok.

Just my two cents before someone jumps on me for opening a old thread.

Try priming white, or black depends on how dark you want ur yellow to be. then use a light brown ur choice, then highlight up too white using what ever colors( yellows you like), makes a very indepth yellow with the shadeing and highlights

They illustrated this method in this months White Dwarf to show the uses of GWs new washes.

They painted the model orange, and then drybrushed it white. Then they used the new yellow wash and it looked pretty good for something so easy to do.

I take a different tac when I'm doing yellows.

start with iyandan darksun, one smooth basecoat over black or white primer it doesnt matter

hit it with a drybrush of white, then wash with yellow ink (use the citadel wash if you must but ink is richer color)

good if you've already primed them black since the foundation is so solid

You can also try spray priming with an almond or light tan color. Rustoleum makes both
