Does anyone have game experience with these walkers - in 5th and using the new dex?

Yes, they suck.

At the very least, they are a very poor choice for a competitive CSM list. The standard GW model is also one of the worst in all the CSM line. The only reason to use Chaos dreads is because you bought a Forgeworld model.

Ive converted two of them using the old Jugernaught Heads for a World eater army. I was hoping to find a competitive build for these guys

If you find one, please let us know. I would love to have an excuse to buy a Forgeworld Black Legion dread.

On the plus side, your opponents will often ignore the Dreadnought, or at least not prioritize it, because they know that 1/3 of the time it will do something unintended. If you roll well enough, you can use that to your advantage and have a dread mostly free to do what it wants. Also note if the Dread is in CC, there's no insanity roll.

Having said that, would I take a SM dread in place of my CSM one? In a heartbeat.

I converted some furioso dreads and used them in a game recently. They did decently well, and having dual CC weapons reduces the danger of fire frenzy.

I figured it out

Im going to model some power claw hands using that gladiator Inquistion figure on both of them and then somehow configure a Dreadnaught sized jump pack on them and use them a Demon Princes. Think anyone would have a problem with that?

Ill use the exhaust vents from landspeeders to begin with and go from there.

That is the best idea I have heard.

Before the change in the Chaos Book... I converted 3 plastic SM Dreads into Chaos dreads... the conversions are really good and extensive. HOWEVER... I cannot find a decent use for them as they just dont make it anywhere with armour 12. Its aweful. I hate owning models I cannot really use with success.

The closest thing to a real build is my mech chaos... I built the list just so I can use 3 dreads!

winged DP X2 w/lash
Greater Deamon

Defiler X2

CC Dreads W/heavy flamer X3 w/extra armour

Land raider w/possession/dozer

X10 CSM riding in Raider w/2Plasma Pistols and AspChamp (rides in LR to deliver the Greater deamon from the landraider hull)

X8 Tzeench Marines
X8 Tzeench Marines

Everything in the list is tough... that way the dreads actually make it to combat... at least one. lol. The list works fairly well... the lash keeps everything in check and drags things into the teeth of either dread or defiler. A really cool list to see on the table.

one way i've seen them used is a very shooty dred (missile and plasma cannon) waits in reserve rest of the army rush to get into combat down the flanks the dred come on in the middle and starts shooting on a 1 he lays wast to the enemy on a 6 he runs forward (normaly giving a better line of fire)

Add some extra legs to them and make them defilers, that's a bit more competitive.

I gave my old dread wings and an extra tentacle arm and did the same. He is in my army profile if you want to look. I modded him out with all the tentacles when he was a regular dread and I was a noob, but the transformation to DP gets him into most of my lists.

yeah,

there's a few threads knocking about dealing with this topic.
I run dreads all the time, they mostly attract alot of fire as most players are afraid of them hitting their line. units lacking strength 6 with no powerfist/melta etc can't hurt them..
they are fun but not dependable...

5th Ed= Dreads that can run so thats another D6" closer to the enemy and away from your troops.

Fire Frenzy can turn a Ranged Dread into a real liablity for you. but if you place it on one flank and you army on the other hopefully the enemy will cop it. in fire frenzy mode it fires twice at something in LOS so use a building to sheild your troops from it's vison... or waste it's first turn or two moving it away from your troops.

100pts buys you a DCCW x2 dread that in the worst case scenario fire frenzys your own troops your only looking at 2 TL bolters
Run 2 100pts DCCWs dreads together and they will shoot each other if the freak out.
and 300pts buys you three of these!
If you get lucky and roll a 6 the dread gets FLeet 6"+D6"+6"= 13"-18" charge range!

I've been running a couple of chaos dreads on and off since 5th started.

The dual-ccw dread draws a lot of fire, but gets immobilized before he reaches close combat.

The ccw+multimelta dread actually works pretty well in my experience, as long as you have at least two dreads. They are so insanely cheap, and if you're not using terminators or chosen, they don't clutter up your FOC. I'd take two of these guys and a defiler in competitive play--plus at least two more vehicles or some bikes--and expect to do well.
