Just wondering really.

Do you buy every codex that is released or do you only purchase ones that you play/hate/have a vested interest in ?

Buy them all myself, due to playing in a few tournies and a general love of the setting as well.

I buy my own army's codex and the codexes of armies I will frequently fight against (e.g. Nids and SMs.) Not being a tournament player I have no reason to familiarise myself with all the armies.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I used to, until I realised that there were alternate means of procuring them.

Now I only get the ones I care about, or the ones that come with stuff (ie. I have the new 'Chaos' Codex, but only because it came with the army box).

I buy them all. I am not a tourney player, but I enjoy the fluff and knowing what other armies do or are capable of.

Of all people good sir, I never would have thought you would have chosen to buy the chaos codex !

I like to read them and it helps a lot to be familiar with any army you play against.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

For some reason, I think he is not the sole person to do this. In fact, I am willing to bet that many people here do as well.

Myself, I own a purchased hardcopy of every codex and rule book, and I also possess a PDF of every codex and rulebook.

Since I paid money to buy that codex/rulebook, I feel justified in owning a digital copy as well. Legal or not, I don't care.

I had all the codexes of 3rd. I started at the beginning of third and found it really cool to have them all back then. 4th only led me to buy SM and Orks, although I also have Tau (do have their first dex) and Chaos.

I also have some alternate rulessources, but most of them are from what I own (ie I do not have a deamon codex and no PDF). Do have the Tau one though and never used it...

I do not care for it anymore and cash has become more limited with a Wife and My own house etc... If I ever have a child I am afrais I will have to quit alltogether for a few years. (Could make me paint the rest of my armies, since I could not buy new stuff ...)

Edit: for spelling, I can't type sometimes

I used to do this, but now I don't because I can't afford it. I'd rather spend what I would pay for a 'dex on miniatures.

I'm the same way, but mostly because my wife's in the Air Force. I use the PDFs for when we get to a new base and TMO hasn't shipped our stuff yet, including my packed Codexes.

I'm with JohnHwangDD on this one. If I'm really excited about an army, I'll buy the Codex new from my FLGS. If I'm mildly interested, I'll look for a deal on the Codex on Bartertown, the Swap Shop, or Chaos Orc. If I'm not interested, I won't buy it. Consequently, I've never bought a Tyranid Codex. They just hold no interest to me.

I usually just buy the Codecies I expect to play against, or the ones I'm interested in reading. Which is most of them. But I refuse to EVER buy an Eldar or Dark Eldar Codex. Ever. FOR ANY REASON!

Which means, other than those two, I pretty much have them all (cept for the new Chaos. I won't let that abortion into my house).

I'm much better about Army Books for WHFB though. I usually only buy books for the armies I play or have played. Unfortunately this means I already own half the books...

I only buy codexes from armies I play (and I only play one army so that makes the list really short). If I'm interested in other armies, I'll look at the other codexes in the store, or borrow them from a friend for the day it takes to read them. I'll ocasionaly download one if I'm not around a store or a friend to borrow one from and I really need the information for some reason, but its rare and I never keep them sitting around on my hard drive for longer than it takes for me to get whatever it was I wanted from them.

I buy the Codices and Army Books that I play or interest me. Definitely not all of them.

Although if I had unlimited money, I probably would buy all of them. As it is I'd rather spend the money on miniatures.

I had all the second edition codex's. I don't really see the point in owning them all again over and over. I just get ones that I will play and browse my friends that get the others.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I started buying every new codex since just before 4th edition came out.

Last year I was missing 3 codexs, but since then I have them all. I got an old (first printing) Dark Eldar codex when it came with a lot I bought off e-bay. I bought a Necron Codex because it was an army that we were thinking about doing for Adepticon's team tourny. And the last piece of the puzzle was filled when the Ork codex came out.

I have many of the codices from 3rd ed except orks(I've never liked orks) and all the codices for my armies for 4th (eldar, SM, DH, WH, which also means I have the IG one as well), plus the three that mates have given me when they got out of the game (Tyranid, necron and chaos).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I have chaos, orks, ultramarines, angels of death and tyranids from 2nd edition, necrons from 3rd edition, and then all of the 4th edition releases except for the specific space marine chapters. I like having every codex for the same reasons as everyone else - keeping up to date, knowing the background changes and having them look good together on my bookshelf

Well, i'm a new player so here is what i've done:

I just have the Codex for my main army (Orks) and i've bought the Tau codex because I liked the models (crisis suits and fire warriors) and wanted to see what the Tau were all about/what they were capable of. I haven't started that Tau army yet really, I do have a Battlesuit Commander that i'm working on painting at the moment though - so maybe someday down the line i'll make my small Tau force. I will be buying the new Space Marine codex once it comes out in October because I'm starting a small SM force with the Marines from the Black Reach box.

Other than that i'm not interested in any of the other races so much except maybe Necrons.

I might buy the Daemon codex too now that I think of it, a few models in that range I really like.

I've got 'em all. Every edition, every 40K supplement ever.

I enjoy reading codexes quite a bit, so even if I don't play the army I buy 'em just to learn what the army does and the additions to the fluff they put into each new iteration.

Again, I didn't choose it, it came with the army box. I wanted the army box, I had to get the Codex. It even had a sticker that say "Includes the new Codex Chaos Space Marines" which personally I think should have been replace with a warning: "Warning: This Box contains Codex Chaos Space Marines - Not reccomended for persons with an IQ higher than 11".

And I did used to buy every Codex. The only 2nd Ed ones I don't have are Space Wolves and Sisters (downloaded Sisters, but it was missing the acts of faith section, which was annoying). Managed to lose the Guard Codex, but got it again on eBay.
