The idea comes with the annual 40K team tournament that occures every February. The past two years that I have played in it my team-mate and I have won the Best Appearance prize with what ever army I was painting at the time. Fine and dandy but 2009 I want to step it up a bit as this will be the last year that I will play in it with intent to move out of state next summer. The new Ork army is seductive as I have over one bajillion Orks, but they have been assembled over the course of 19 years there is little consistency in style between them. My budy has played Chaos for years and figured that it would be an easy combo dispite my long standing disgust with the ancient history of there having once been Chaos Tainted Orks.
Philosophy and rambling aside, the project; we have to assemble 2x1,000 pt armies each within the force org requirments but both not to exceed a single chart. Thus we must have 2 HQ's, 4 Troops and no more than 3 of each of the other slots. There are some other requirments, but they are irrelevant. So far the list is as such:
+Chaos lord on Bike with mark of Nurgle and a Daemon Weapon.
+Warboss on bike with a power Klaw
+3, 12 man units of Boyz with a nob sportin a power Klaw and a Trukk each.
+2, 7 man units of Plague Marines with various upgrades and a Rhino each
+5 man Chaos Marine unit with a few Melta Guns and a Rhino
+9 man Ork Bike Unit with nob rockin a Power Klaw
+Defiler with three dread Close Combat weapons and either the reaper or the Flamers.
+2, 2 Kan units with Shootas.
The trick has been to tone down the amount of nurglification that Plague Marines have and throw more Mad Max-ish-ness into them all the while beefing the ammount fo plague in the Orks. I love the way that the old school Plague Marines looked, they had a rag-tag WWII feel to them over the puss-like, mutated versions we have today. as such I have only a few ideas on how to mod the Orks.
now that I have bored you all to death with my balthering, here is the real reason any of us bother looking at the M&P section; PICTURES!!!
First is the idea for the Defiler, more of a slugish, lumbering beast:
The eyes, three arms, big jaw and klaws. It would look more like a small Stompa than a crawly Defiler. I am not sold on this concept as such as the body and jaw are somewhat at odds with one another.
Second is a sketch or a marine.
Ork styled shoulder pauldrons, canister of plague junk instead of a power source, exhaust pipes like any good Mad Dok would pump out and with an extended collar with a few teeth reminiscent of Gorka Morka Digga Nobs, and a smaller Ork Choppa and Slugga.
Now a WIP of the Torso.
The Power Source.
The canister is a lil high up and too wide for my taste so far and the exhaust tubes stick out to much and not up enough. But you get the idea.
Struggling against the rapture of that bloody World of Warcraft blight here is an updated pic of the project's sluggish progress. What are your thoughts?
For the next one I would like to change out the rivets for smaller rivets (that was the smallest Plastic Dowel I had at the moment) and more of them, maybe shrink the diamiter of his collar, add more glyphs to his armour, twist the exhaust ports upwards a bit more and possibly shrink the canister. The original sketch I had straps wrap over the tank and attach to his shoulderpads to emulate the suspenders of the Ork, might try that out to see how it looks with the next guy.
I know it is a lil early in production, but figured if I threw what I have so far out there to the wolves it will inspire me to work on the army. What do you all think so far? Are there any suggestions or leads to other Nurgle-Ork armies out there? Any good movies to help inspire this mess? There are transports that I haven't reallt begun to think about, any suggestions on kits to bash? Thank you all for you interest thus far in the P&M forum, and now it is Your turn!

Nice work!!! The size of the slugga in that marines hand really shows how damn big the Orks are!!
I've often thought of having a detatchment of Khorne tainted Orks to go with my chaos guys, just because I think there's so much you can do with it! Never thought of having some Orky marines though!!
I guess the obvious choice once you've given your Orks the plague symptoms... (bleurgh, I really am waaay too squeamish to ever model plague marines!!!) is to give them chaos marines wargear and armour... they'll probably end up looking like plague tainted lootas but that's no bad thing!!! You need to come up with some ideas on how to plagueify metalwork, so you can give some Orky vehicles and weapons a bit of chaos taint... obviously orkifying the marine's kit is dead easy, just add more spikes, bigger barrels and glyphs to everything!!! Maybe some sort of adapted Ork glyph to go as a common symbol for the Ork force, taint it in some way, something you can do on the vehicles as well as on shoulder pads and banners.
Keep up the good work!!

Okay, trying some of the suggestions that people left on the P&M thread (see http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/215681.page). The two biggies so far are turning the canister diagnally, using smaller rivits and adding more teeth. What do you think so far?

Here are some pics of the second Orky Death Guard guy. I twisted the canister around a bit (was that what you were envisioning, Ryan?), made the stacks more upright, made smaller rivets, and added more teethy bits.
Unfortunatly I was a bit lazy in making the stacks and used the next size up so they are a bit bigger and stick out more than i would have liked. Not sold on the virtical canister yet, but I do like it. I will play more with the angle of the next one a bit and see what happens. Might try a special weapon next, I think the virtical canister idea with a smaller Flamer propelant tank would look pretty cool next to it.

You know, I have to make a confession. This concept, pretty meh for me. However, I must simply admire your execution. Really good stuff. I like the vertical canister, myself. Will you be sticking to plasma, as Papa Nurgle's beloved Death Guard love so much?

Thank you for your honesty, It is more an excersize or a test in modeling. If my memory serves me I think one squad will have two plasma rifles for anti-Power Armourand the other will have two flamers for anti-horde and a combi flamer. The regular-ass chaos marine squad will have two melta guns to hunt tanks.

I have to agree that the concept doesn't really grab me, either... but I'm liking what you've done, so far.
I think that, if you removed the ork specific stuff (Ork gun, Dags, etc), these would make excellent Deathguard Marines in and of themselves.
I might stea... er... copy some of the designs you have here for Nurgle CSM's of my own.

In an attempt to be even less productive I went out and bought Civilization: Revolution for the PS3 and now I do even LESS modeling. Damn video games!!! GRRRRR!! Going to try and crank out soem figs this weekend, and here is the first one, a Nurgley Ork. It is not as nurgley as I would like but I do not want the Ork to be entirly Plagued out but just a bit balanced. I want to put some maggots coming out of the wound on his arm and I forgot the rivets on the chainsword. But what do you think?
I am still looking for some ideas as to what the Rhino/trukks should look like. Any Ideas?

Just gave a go at painting these guys based off of what phillpowell had been doing on his P&M thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/215409.page#386775
It is a new approach for me and I could not ape his style the way I wanted, but I am not totally upset with what happened. Here it is
What he was doing was this:
"spray white primer
green ork hide foundation all armour trim
pain the eyes gold
paint the bolter casing mechrite foundation red and the rest of the bolter and knife tin bitz.
using the new washes: wash in black (heavily focuss in recess etc) then brown, then green, a real heavy coat of green.
water down skull white and apply over the armour in thin, quick stripes, until you get a fair coverage. (this may mean going over some areas more than once but its dry as soon as it hits the model so it took no time.) once that was done i washed the armour again in brown, before going over it again with the watered down white.
the bolter is highlighted with mechrite red, then mechrite red with bleach bone for the extreme line. the armour trim is highlighted with camo green.
it sounds long but actually it didnt take that long and i paint slower than my nan knits. with batches of ten i should be able to crack on at pace. when i get the time to crack on at pace though.
im thinking that for my character models using more than one colour of stripes (i.e. brown, bleach bone and white) will add more depth and help them stand out."
the model had been primed black prior to trying this out so that was what I started with, then figured I would jump-start the process by doin a heavy drybrush of terricotta and going over it with the white stripes. Then washed it with brown ink and went back into it with fewer stripies. All the detail was more of the same; paint base color, wash brown or green and highlight. Nothing fancy on this guy, but I think the next will have to see more chipping and weathering.
Any thoughts?

Which white pieces are you looking at? Those on the unpainted model? That would be plasticard/tube/rod that you can get at most hobby/train stores. It is pretty rad stuff. Does that answer your question or am I missing something?

All that workin on a Raven Wing bike got me inspired to get some Warboss action goin on. Here is the Warboss' bike thus far. I wanted to bring it back to the O.G. tracked bike business that Orks used to be all about and in a way it is a study for a potention real life tracked ratbike. Anyway here are some pics.
So far the legs are just sitting on the bike, I'm not too sure if I wanna chop up an Ogre or putty up a new body for the boss. Either way I am luvin the plastic warboss legs and it pains me that I am giving kudos to the Assault on Black Reach minis in any way.
The idea now is to put a skirt around the tracks with some exhausts shootin out the back and put a front wheel up front. Lookin back through some sketches of potential warbike ideas I wanted to make a fat mack truck styled grill fender for the front wheel. it would basicly be a big box with horizontal slats on the front with twin shootas on one side. Okay, now forgive my MS Paint skills but uhhh, I hope you get the idea as to what I am trying for with the grill/fender.
Whatta ya think?

Okay, so I putzed around with the Warboss's bike and ..... UGH!!!! Had to shelf it for a bit to not go postal and kill bunnies! The frunt grill/fender was giving me problems. I tried cutting a series of flat pieces to make it more angular like a beakie bike, then tried melting it in a more curved fashion and it all sucked! Sooo, the frunt grill fender has been put on hold and the bike in general only just recently was picked back up a few days ago after I spent most of my time working on Plague Beakies and Orksies. Anyway, here are some pics or the Boss:
The face I am pretty much done with and the body still needs more work, but that will have to wait till the hundle bars are done so I know where the arm will rest. Might be hard to tell but there is a third eye up on top, and uh..... never thought of myself as religous but uh... THANK GOD FOR A PLASTIC WARBOSS!!! Cutting and repositioning him would have sucked if he were metal!!! Anywho, the struts for the forks are just sitting there and have not been glued either in case they need to be lengthened or shortened. To the guy that was asking for a tutorial on how to make the tracks sorry I did not take pics back then but I'll be making more of those blasted track pieces when the Trukks and Rhinos come.
Here are some jolly Ork pics!
Dunna know if youc an tell but he is missing his jaw and his tongue is flopping out
Three Eyed Gass Mask!
The Squad is slowly growing but I have been wanting to save the Orks for last to get more ideas on how to customize them, so the squad is only about 6 men out of 12 strong.
Not sure what I think of the skin so far. The skin is gobbo green I think dry brushed with some signifigantly lightened green and then another druy brush of nearly ivory white paint with a blue wash over it, but I think the blue got rid of the green hint. Hmmmmm. the metal bitz are gunna be a few shades of brown with some metal chips and the occasional dab of paint so they look signifigantly rusted slabs of iron.
Now the other aspect of this army, the Plague Marines. The first of two squads is finished with a straggler from the upcoming second squad (there will be a third squad but it will be vanilla chaos instead of plague).
The first Plasma Pistol, notice the belly plate to save him from melting pistols!
And the Group shot! The first squad will have two plasma pistols and a champ with a power weapon. The second squad will have two flamers and a champ with a combi flamer I think. The third not-so-nurgley squad will only be 5 men instead of 7 and have two meltas and a champ with power fist. So I guess these guys are about ready for a paint job!!

Yikes! 5 and a half years later the Orky Plague Marines and Nurgley Orks have been popped out of their case and are getting some attention! With a codex change to the Chaos Marines, an upcoming codex change for the Orks as well as a new tournament direction I am changing up what I plan on doing. Instead of a 7-man squad of Plague Marines with plasma pistols and another with flamers and champ with combi-flamer I am swapping the flamers with Melta guns and giving the champ a Power Klaw. Instead of the Defiler I am going to go with a Hell Drake and a Lord with Brand of Skrillix (okay, I know that isn't what it is called). The Chaos side of the house will be the allied detachment and designed to take out armour in various forms. The Orks haven't been worked on at all in the last 5 and a half years and I am holding off on them till the new codex drops but unless there is a big change in 7th edition and the new codex I imagine it will be a few units in trukks, maybe some Kans and a Warboss on a bike with some homies to go with him. Fast and in yer face! The tournament is the last weekend in August. Wish me luck!
Now, on to pics from last night's modeling session:
This is going to be a "sounts-as" Melta gun, I wanted more of a cutting torch look to it and figured the Imperial Guard flamer was a good base as it has the handle swept back at more of a 45 degree angle. The canister will have a hose coming off it to the gun made out of guitar wire and a hose coming off of the backpack canister going into his belly.
I still want to put more chips in the armour as well as more jags and details but I am super happy with how this turned out! What do you think?

Thanks man!
Last night I started working on a Lord, I want him to be special and afraid that I might get caught in a rut making the Plague Marines so I started looking around my bits and trying to find some really improbable pieces. First for the chest is I found this, an Imperial Knight face plate:
Figured I could use the mouth guard for the chest. I love the holds and maybe put some piping in to the cross part on the other side.
Thinking about the larger picture I wanted a hooded head and more canisters in his backpack than the other blokes. He'll have an axe and that Brand of Strongbad or what ever it is called, but how would you represent that? Some sort of chemical sprayer, but most of the chemical sprayers I am familiar with are kind of boring, just a pipe with a release lever where the hose meets the pipe. Any suggestions would be helpful!
Found a hooded head in my Dark Angel bits, I'll put some holes in the hood but I think this would work. Right now he is dry-fit to the head and some legs that will belong to somebody else. What do you think so far?

Oh yeah, I like that hand chem-flamer thing! Might be a fun excuse to buy some Centurions to convert into a chem flamer arm, eh? Been looking for an excuse for a while.
Been a while but this is what I have been working on:
Orky Nurgle Rhino. The design is something that I have been toying around with in my head for a while. I grew in a gold mining camp in Canada's Yukon territory as a kid and it seemed like everybody had an auger on an all-terrain Nodwell which has this iconic forward cab so I really wanted to do something like that. First part would be to pull the cab forward and make the front more vertical, though the Nowell has a slight swept face I wanted it to be more exaggerated. Then taking and widening it with another front armour plate split in half to help the drivers see off to the side. The back was cut off to make it more open toppped to emulate the Ork Trukk as well as giving it some running boards.
Later I will build custom tracks to give the tank more height, a large tankard will go over the right side, exhaust tubes will come off the front and run down the lower sides of the tank and eventually a tarp canopy will cover the transport compartment.

Hey guys,
Had a pretty good weekend with lots of scraping, cutting, gluing and epoxy, got everything up to at least WSIWYG standard and played a game against my buddy's Dark Angels. We pulled a draw but just barely, he was one model away from being tabled and I got too confident.
Anyway, here are some updated Nurgle Lord pics.
First up is a close up of the Brand of Skrillex WIP on his arm. I went with the chem shooter idea:
Now it is nearly complete!
I really really really like how this guy turned out, still have to put a tube running from the large canister to his chest, perhaps give his canisters some brackets and then chip him up a bit more and add bolts. So stoked!
Made some progress on the Rhino too, but that will come later.
