Yeah, it's called "the good old days".

Everyone remembers the golden era when they joined the hobby, when everything was cheap, and it came with moonbeams and skittles and puppies.

It's always been expensive, once they established themselves (RT era was super cheap, but models were mostly super crap). Inflation, etc. It's the nature of the beast to have prices rise, and they'll always seem too pricey, but we keep buying them, so...

to be fair: when I "joined the hobby" over a decade ago:
- Internet sales were unrestricted
- army deals were full armies and actual deals
- gas was a buck a gallon

Ahh, good times.

yep and the good ol' days, gas was so cheap that muscle cars were no problem to keep running on the roads. Candy was a nickle or a dime. televisions were black and white and had rabbit ears. telephones had party lines and you had to use an operator to get out of your local line. ties were thin, lapels were thin, dress pants were wore "high water" style so that your socks could be seen.

the good ol' days are all relative. Depending on how old you are.. Welcome to the world where it costs money to get stuff. I'd love for it to return to the age of barter where I can trade 2 goats for new army.. but then again, in this day and age it might be 10 goats for that same box, and once again, it's the same old cycle of bitching about how everything costs more now than it did before. it's part of life. sorry, you won't ever change that.

I'd be happy to send them 4 chickens and 3 goats and a pig for a few vindicators and terminator squads. I wonder in the good old days, did you have to walk to the store up hill in snow both ways? I don't have to do that now, so I don't mind paying a little extra. The whole hill/snow thing really sucks.

Well you are all too young.

I remember when 25mm figures cost 25p each -- that was over 25 years ago -- and Citadel were expensive then, compared to standard wargame figures like Minifigs. They were also more detailed and characterful.

GW figures are still the most expensive, though other companies like Infinity (Corvus Belli) are rivalling them on that score.

You either want to play with GW or not.

@George Spiggot: Yes, they were too crap. I know because that's what I spent all my spare cash on. I had hordes of them, and it was when I finally started to get a clue about inks and drybrushing that I realized that my painting skills exceeded the worth of the miniatures. I finally ended up selling them at the swap and shop in the late 90's for about a nickel apiece and considered myself lucky.

So don't buy GW from GW. get them cheap off of all of these guys running away from GW like the plague.

E Bay is the shiznits as far as some good deals, and pricing to boot. If that doesn't cut the mustards, then try going to LGS's for the deals.

GW has always been upper crust as far as the price per product. Name me a time when they wern't.

We always Pee'd and Moaned about the pricing. Either you will stick with it, being a careful buyer of exactly what you want, in minimal purchasing, or you will go blow it all at the same load and cry about how expensive they are.

DON'T BUY IT IF THE PRICE doesn't suit your taste. Eventually they will figure out when the staraw broke the camels back, and either adapt or die.

They arn't called the Evil Empire for nothing, you know. Let them die a slow and painful death. Eventually someone else will pick up the standard and bear it to some sort of game worth playing.

I think GW's stuff is pretty expensive. So I just create a short list of products that are a good value and then go with eBay or online discounters or whatever to get what I want.

Black Reach? Amazing Value.
Tyranid Warriors -- used to pay $16 CAD each for ones I hated. $15 each for the current great ones? And then getting them from the warstore.com's bitz section or ebay for mega cheap? So it's like $7-8 each? Awesome.

In my humble opinion, they are.

Were they innovative for their time? Yes. Do they stand up to the models from today? No.

There are a few exceptions, some of the old chaos warriors (who make great heralds, btw), but the original plastic marines are crap, as were the original Land raider and rhino. Sorry, but IMHO, they just can't stand up to the current releases.

Not to worry.

There was a thread about members' ages a couple of years go.

Here I come...and in tow is my very special super duper value calculamatic!

Right, first up, whilst I agree GW's prices might be high, this does not mean they are bad value. Value, is the worth and use that can be extracted from a purchase.

Now, GW, like all Games companies, falls into the leisure and luxury pool of purchases. I don't think anyone has died from lack of models. Thus, it is as this you have to consider them in terms of overall value. But how does one work out value? Well, you can't, not 100%. It's far too subjective a matter to give a definitive answer. But, the following equation is most definitely food for thought...

Now then, I am currently in the middle of collecting a Savage Orc Army. By the time I am finished getting all the bits and bobs I need together, I reckon it will have cost me, including tools, books, paints, glue etc...£300, or there abouts (it is all Metal you know!) For the exact breakdown of whats in it, I'll list the component models...

1 High Elf Dragon
1 Orc Wyvern
1 Plastic Warboss Kit
1 Wurrzagg Blister
1 Orc Shaman Box (1 mounted, 1 on foot)
51 Savage Orc Boyz, 9 Savage Orc Command (three of each, making 60 Savage Orcs in total)
5 Savage Orc Boarboyz.

So, I have spent £300, and physically, I've not exactly got a lot for my money really. But, with these few models, I can eat up a lot of my free time indulging in a hobby I enjoy. But how much time?

Well, I can paint 4 Boyz an hour, so thats 15 hours painting them. Wyvern Conversion overall, took me 8 hours including painting. The rest I reckon I can nail in 5 hours or so. So, call it 28 hours total to clean up, build and paint my stuff. 7 hours of painting a week, 4 weeks to do it in. Now, in a single year, which I think is a modest run for an army before new things distract me, that leaves 48 weeks of gaming with my full force. Usually, I get one game a week, and that will see me for 2 hours at a minimum. So, 48X2 means 96 hours of boredom staved off.

So, 28 hours to paint, 96 gaming hours...in a year, that has taken up 124 hours of gaming. Now, here's the abstract bit. Divide the COST of the army, by the TIME. So, in my case, thats £300/124hours.

This gives me an hourly cost to play the games of...£2.41. Not too shabby. Certainly, where I am, there is nuts all else I can do for £2.41 an hour. Cinema is £9.50 to get in, not including transport there (out of town, crap bus service, whilst the old in town one is left to rot. Thanks Odeon.) or munchies. I can't even get a pint of Carling for that. £2.65 in my local pub. Granted, it will buy me enough baccy for 50 snouts (good old Golden Virginia) but thats not really a hobby. That's an essential.

Go ahead, try it out and see whether it is good value to you!

I think I've found your problem Mad Dok Grotsnik.... You're drinking Carling.

Complain about the price of minis when you live in Canada or Oz and you are being Gouged like no tomorrow and there is an immediate saving of 20-30%+, including postage just by ordering from US or UK websites, and even more from independent net dealers (where I buy all mine from).

I'm happy to buy the overseas prices, so I can buy resin bases, metal shoulderpads and bitz to customize my forces.

Well, it's either £2.65 a pop for Carling, or I can drink Monsieur Artois Finest Angry Juice for a whopping £3.00 a pint!

Or I can ponce out and neck two bottles of wine, but I really need to be in my Pirate Shirt for that.

As for Canadia and HMP Australia (:p) it's mainly fluctations in exchange rates, something which can only really be adjusted periodically, rather than constantly.

You could also try playing GW games using other manufacturers models. Not applicable if in store or at one of their events, but would work at home or your local club. Off the top of my head I think Pig Iron have some models that would work

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.
