December for LOTR?

Agree that I don't care except I need to look for a LOTR large model to enter in enxt years golden demon as it is the least subscribed category...

Feb has been locked in for the last couple of months as the date for lizardmen...

Well, the Hobbit will be seeing the cinemas next year or the year after that if I'm not mistaken so GW will have new material to wring their hands over. For the time being they'll just have to release old stuff over and over again by implementing obscure novel characters or making yet another sculp of Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn in dramatic poses.

The mass combat rules (not the ones from the Alamo) are due next year, along with movement trays with cutouts for the round bases.

There's tons of stuff that is from periods before the books that they can use. Plus, like, another fifty Gimli sculpts.

SHH! Don't give them ideas! LotR was a draw on their time and resources that nobody cared about. I knew from it's conception that it was doomed to fizzle out.

I think that LOTR is going down hill and not even a new movie will save it. My 7 years old brother was in a store with me buying 40k orks and sees the LOTR and asks "can i have some of them" my quiet reply was "not on your life, im not wasting money on something that is dying out, how about some Nids instead" his reply was "Nids what are they, are they the cool bugs" and off we went

Problem is GW signed a contract with New Line Cinema and they are supposed to support their LotR line for some time to come (read: a decade or so). Funny enough the LotR stuff that GW sells accounts for 60% of the franchise income made from all LotR merchandise.

now thats a problem cause if LOTR starts to fail and they are forced to keep it, then lossing money on them will force other prices up to try and cover the losses which i dont like

Ya I was looking in to the LOTR game at the local shop, when I asked about it and just got a dirty look and they told me it would cost my soul if I ever asked again.

"Well, they haven't made Imrahil's knights yet..."

Yep, they already have'em. They even have a cool special rule because of their devotness to the Gondorian cause.

Anyways. I think that LOTR gets a bad rap form most people on Dakka. Seeing as I know about 8-9 people who have gotten hundreds of dollars of Lord of the Rings minis but don't play any of the other Games Workshop games. My teacher who is a Tolkien nut has the entire range but doesn't play with them very often. He merely paints them up and then recreates scenes from the books.

Yeah, LotR is pretty popular, just not among Warhammer players, by and large. I seem to recall reading (fairly recently, even) that LotR was outselling WHFB. Plus, the rules are better, and so are the miniatures, and the background. Say, how come I'M not playing this LotR thing?!?

Because yo urefuse to givin to the vastly over popular and over rated franchise that is LOTR and instead choose to live your life free from the criticism of your peers and the questionable gender of Elfs named Legolas.

It's a personal preference I guess. I'd move on beyond the Mines of Moria set if the LotR models were 28mm Legendary/Heroic instead of the more realistic sculpts. Other than that, the rules are decent and fun IMHO, the whole priority thing adds a nice new level to the whole "your turn, my turn" thing.

And again a personal thing: I also find that painting up LotR models is dull compared to WHFB and 40K minis.

I doubt that LotR is outselling WFB, since I never see anybody an cons playing the game, but there's plenty of 40K and WFB. Heck, I've seen move Blood Bowl players than LotR players.

@BigToof - how much work have you actually spent looking for LotR players? If you don't look, you probably won't find.

That's about the safest prediction on Earth, I think it was King Solomon who said the only thing that's always true is "this too shall pass".

Ha ha, one thing you should all try is use the priority and turn set up rules for Lord of the Rings in your Warhammer and 40k games. Its a lot more fun and quite a bit more balanced. (For instance, sure you get to shoot first but I get to try and move out of the way before you open up with those 8 Rail guns you brought.)

Here, here, all the poopooers are still into the 2 turn tabling that happens when one side gets to shoot your side to crap before you even get to move.. The other thing that LoTR offers is heroic moves.. Now that can turn a game around if used properly..

I don't play LoTR as much as Fantasy or 40K, but the ruleset is probably one the best sets put out by GW..

That made me laugh but I would not mind you finding the article.

The reality of it is that LOTR is a drain on GW and its resources. The game did very well when the movie were still in the theaters. Once those ended things REALLY slowed down. Most independant retailers stock it due to GW requirements and that is usually limited to the starter sets. The game started to strugle and some dimwad signed a new contract to continue the game for another 5-10 years. Most people agree that GW's struggles of the last few years are heavily due to LOTR...I think it is more related to bad decision and LOTR.

A great majority of the models sold for LOTR are actually just for people that are into the LOTR movies. They buy the mini's to paint and put on a shelf. If you sell LOTR mini's in blisters at some type of convention you can sell bunches!!!

I did play the game a few times and the rules are pretty good IIRC but I just was not that into the story line and I think that is the limiting factor of the game.

Oh and by the way....What ever happened to Dark Eldar in Nov/Dec?

@Fishboy - if LotR were a drain, GW wouldn't continue to drive new product for it. *You* may not be seeing the sales, but GW doesn't keep anything they don't make money on.

Per BoLS (see other thread), Dark Eldar are July, 2009 at the earliest, with a good chance to be bumped into 2010.
