Hi guys, right i was in FLGS today and i was looking around and i decided i want to do a new 40k army, at the moment i've got Guard, Marines and Chaos and i am bit undecided on what to do next, i want to have another army i just can't figure out which one, i have drawn up a small shortlist of ones i would like to play with and wanted to get your guys opinions on it. i want this army purely for painting, the marines i have at the moment is a 4th ed army pure and simple and i am thinking of just retiring it to the cabinet and leave it there as at the cost of getting the army done for 5th ed i may as well just buy a new army

anyway i have drawn up this short list and wanted to get your opinions on these armies and which one i should go for

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

You have already done Marines, so they and the Space Wolves are out (you should wait for the new codex to do them anyways).

Witch Hunters would be good because you can also use them as allies in your SM and IG armies.

But if I was you, I would go with some kind of xenos.

Tau if you like shooting, Demons if you like assault.

I say daemons because they are fun. Well played they are "lower upper class" as I like to say, better than tier 2 but not quite tier 1 unbeatable.

You can do shooting if you want and you can certainly do assault in a few different ways.

The random nature of their arrival means that you will have to stay engaged in the game and think on your feet (something that appeals to me.)

They can do hoard or they can do small elite lists. You can play crazy fast maneuver armies or slow moving resilient armies.

In short, they are a fluid dynamic army of specialists and an absolute blast to play.

I will, however, warn you that there is a bit of a learning curve involved - so you should probably expect to lose pretty solidly until you get a handle on it. If that bothers you, then go for something else.

aye, as i said i put marines in there because at the moment my marine army is not 5th ed at all (its all 5 or 6 Las/Plas squads etc) and its going to cost alot of money just for bolter marines to make it worth while to use again, but i agree we can strike them off

Daemons are an army that interests me, i have played a couple of games against them, i have faced off against an epidemus army, fateweaver shooty army, and a mixed lists that really did have a bit of everything, even though the dominant theme is slaanesh.

now the models appeal to me (apart from some of the slaanesh stuff) however the army list, i just don't know where to start with it really, being in England we play 1500pts so does anyone have any recommendations of lists that work and are fun to play, as this army i wasn't considering for the GT (i have my lashing plague marine army for that)

Great Unclean One (Breath, Flies)

10 Plaguebearers (Icon)
10 Plaguebearers (Icon)
5 Horrors (Changeling)
10 Bloodletters

5 Bloodcrushers (Rending)
5 Flamers

Soul Grinder (Tongue)
Soul Grinder (Phlegm)

That is a decent, well rounded list that avoids slaanesh models since you don't like them. I think that comes up to about 1500 points. You could give both grinders Phlegm if you felt you needed some more anti-horde. They are good at tearing vehicle apart in close combat and getting there with fleet.

If you wanted another greater daemon you could easily swap out bloodcrushers and a couple of flamers for a well equipped bloodletter or LoC.

thanks for that, interesting list, i take it you have the Plaugebearers come in on the first wave so i can get the flamers and crushers where needed?

i have the old daemonettes anyway (i have scrounged and traded off mates for these as they serve as my CSM lesser daemons as i like the models(not just for the obvious reasons mind!)

i've flicked through the codex and a couple of things come to mind, flamers do seem to be awesome and an automatic choice in both 40k and fantasy (my wood elves really didnt like the flamers at all)

i'm more of a tzeentch liker from the fluff sense, however i can see how the army works and i think it could be effective, i was talking to my mate who plays daemons and he said he didn't like using tongue as the soulgrinders were too inaccurate is this a major issue?

also i've noticed a few people have voted on sisters, any reasons for this?

I actually go with one of the plaguebearer units in each wave so you are ensured of having an icon. You won't always need to come off of it, but it is invaluable to have the option of a safe drop.

The tongue is only BS3, but it is S10 AP1. I don't typically use it, but I know that a lot of people really like it. I prefer phlegm, personally, but some people swear by tongue.

i suppose some people might like the option of having an anti tank weapon besides combat/bolt of change, and it gives it anti tank if it gets a bad drop

still don't see why you need the anti tank gun thought when the unit is designed to mash things up in CC but i suppose it helps

Marines just got redone, and Sisters will be the last army to be redone, so either one of those, as they have the most longevity in them.

I voted for Sisters.

Well, one of the cool things about the daemon codex is that there are very few stinkers. Most of the units will have some place and job to do. They won't always be the best, but with the notable exception of furies and screamers I have had decent success using everything else depending on the list composition.

sisters are an interesting choice, i have always liked the way the army plays, i did write up a mech list for someone not so long ago that i really liked so i may be attempted to do that, of course there is always the draw back of it being a metal army, and the fact i hate the exorcists i would have to buy the ForgeWorld ones and converting all the sister superiors to have evisceraters (SP?) still i do like the models alot

I had sisters for a long time, actually. The reason i ultimately got rid of them is that there weren't really many different ways of playing them and I got bored with what felt, to me, like effectively playing the same game over and over again. Sure, faith points are good and give some flexibility but you end up using them the same in most games.

Somnicide - what are we talking a mech sisters support by exorcists theme here? as thats the trend i have noticed with sisters alot, its always about 3 exorcists

I only used 2 and a unit of 10 retributors but yeah, mostly mech, hop out and shoot, if you get a lot of hits use the faith to ignore armor.

I tried the freak show lists to mix it up but those were just tragically uncompetitive.

I also would run with 2x7 seraphim from time to time. I did well with them, made them into the SCGWL playoffs. They just lost interest for me because there weren't a whole lot of different builds (and I also have a Black Templars army, so they were thematically similar.)

aye i can see your problem with that, my mate alot like you runs mostly mech, only 2 exorcists like you and takes seraphim with a cannoness with a jump pack running around with a blessed weapon? i think, the one that gives her more str anyway, and he has alot of success with it, but i didnt stand up to my assault cannon army from hell though, and a few other armies (like the old iron warriors, eldar sometimes),

still a fun army and nice models, seems like i would paint it, leave it in the cabinet, get it out for the odd game or two and put it in there again until i felt the need to use it,

i think something like daemons maybe the answer unless anyone has got any other suggestions as they seem to offer the most in the nice models and different to play compared to the armies i already own

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I see this question turn up time and time again, it still makes no sense. This is a hobby based on choice and no matter what advice you ask the choice is always yours. So things you can ask, although still 100% your choice; for example if you couldn't decide whether to paint some minitures in one of several colour schemes, and you want opinions on what "works".
However to ask advice on an army choice only ever makes sense if you are asking metagame questions. For example; "are Imperial Guard worth bothering with pre new codex?"
Asking for help with choosing an army for artistic reasons doesnt help. I understand why people do it but it is an illusion, at best it only acts as affirmation for a decision you have already made. At worst it confuses you, make up your own mind, afterr all you are the one to pay for it.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

ah fantasy, i have High Elves and Wood Elves already and i have the new warriors of chaos on the way for xmas, so fantasy is pretty much sorted, i generally only like playing with elves anyway always enjoy the play style, that and i had a 4000pts Dark Elves vs High Elves recently so i foresee those games becoming a regular thing from now on as it was awesome

but with my 21st coming up soon and no idea what to have i was going to get all the money i get off relatives and such and buy a new army,

in regards to Orlanth's post, i agree, however i drew up a short list of the models that i liked, and probably will do over the course of time (new codex's being awesome/rubbish as applicable), so in respects, i am asking more in metagame line of questioning, for example we have already discussed how sisters only work in a mech force and not a great deal else,
