after a few days of pondering, I realised that I don't have a clue how to put my army together right yet. Once I pick up a few more models, this will be a problem.

with what I have now and a battleforce set, sentenel 3 pack, and a spare russ. I'll have:

68 guardsmen
3 heavy weapons
4 sentenels
2 chimeras
and 2 LRBT

With the Iron dicipline, close order drill, and sharpshooter doctrines in there.

I'm just not sure on how to piece them together...

God you guys are all coming out of the woodwork at the moment, aren't you?

Ok, I'll ask you the same bunch of questions I asked Clthomps in this thread:

Now, in order to help you further I need to know a few things:

1. What points level are you aiming for? 1250? 1550? 1850? 2050? Apoc (ie.3000-5000)?
4. Do you intend to convert special weapons from plastic guys or buy special weapons (ie. metal plasmas and meltas)?
5. Are you willing to stretch the contents of the Heavy Weapon box as far as it will take you, or are you just going to stick to the instructions and make them all as shown on the picture (the former requires creativity, the latter requires more $$$)?
6. How much are you willing to buy?

Once you have the answers to the above, we can proceed.

yep, quite a few ig newbs around...

anyways
1: looking around the 1500 mark
2: converting, I'm not rich (wrong hobby, eh?)
3: definatly stretching the heavy kits, they need to be unique to be cool, right?
4: I think the aforementioned kits (save for plas/melt bits as needed) is about all my wallet can handle.

I have been following much of what H.B.M.C. as been saying to the newer guard players. I have about 1000pt army painted and much more in the works. I find myself doing many of the same things that he does. So I might chip in from time to time but his advise on the subject is pretty solid without telling you this is you list and you will like it.

His approach is solid and has written many time consuming posts about the subject. I would dig up some of these threads and study them closely if i were you as they will educate you in 5th ed guard. Good luck and thanks for signing up to be in the guard.

Sorry, my PSP won't let me type it all at once...

Troop 3
20 conscripts
80pts

Fast attack

3 more LC sentenels
165pts

heavy support

2 LRBT
hull LC's
sponson H bolters
330pts

thats 1252 pts total lf I didn't miss anything.

should I split the conscripts and make real squads out of them?
another LC squad?

doing both of those puts 3 more LCs and 2 more plas and HBs at 1452. Worth it?

i am starting traitor guard if you want to strechout the heavy weapons squads you can use a regular troop body to use w/ the rocket launcher for your squads which leaves you with the heavy weapons squads for the cammand platoon or as heavy weapons squads thats what i am doing for my traitors

I'm going to treat this as a clean sheet of paper, and go with what you have today.

You have 68 dudes and a full set of heavy weapons (ML, AC, LC, HB). If you're a SM player, then 68 dudes seems like a lot. But this is Guard, so actually, it isn't.

Typically, you will want an infantry core like this:
5 HQ w/ 4 Meltas (or 4 Plasmas)
6 SWS w/ 2 Meltas & DC
6 SWS w/ 2 Meltas & DC

5 Vets w/ 3 Meltas (or 3 Plasmas)
5 Vets w/ 3 Meltas (or 3 Plasmas)
5 Vets w/ 3 Meltas (or 3 Plasmas)

5 Platoon HQ
10 Platoon Troops
10 Platoon Troops

5 Platoon HQ
10 Platoon Troops
10 Platoon Troops

That's 82 guys right there!

So I think you would generally do better to buy a 2nd Cadian Battleforce instead of the Sentinels and Russ. It would give you a lot more useful dudes, more heavy weapons, and still keep the Russ.

If you can convert, I'd suggest that you plan to convert the Russes into Demolishers along with the Chimeras to Hellhounds for close support of your Drop Infantry.
