On its current course, I don't think it's headed towards extinction, and won't be for quite some time. There are certainly ways to make life in general better, but it's doing pretty well right now. The most immediate threat to humanity's long term existence is probably the tyranids, and after that, well... humanity itself.

Because the species homo sapiens is rapidly evolving into an entirely different, psychic race, where we are no longer homo sapiens. In that sense mankind wouldn't exist any more, but at the core we'd still be fundamentally human, so it's difficult to say.

Chaos isn't a threat and won't be for a long time, because it needs mankind's masses to sustain itself. The Orks, if they ever conquered us, would use us as slaves, the tau would use us as slaves under a different name. The Eldar are too concerned with Chaos to bother fighting mankind on all but the rarest of occasions, while the dark eldar simply lack the resources to wipe us all out (and they want us as slaves/gladiators/sacrifices anyway, so they'd probably keep a group of us in capitivity to continuously breed more humans).

Which leaves tyranids and necrons as the only races who would intentionally wipe out the human race, and of those the Necrons are far and few between, disorganized into splintered factions, and still largely dormant.

The Imperium is beset on all sides by races wanting to crush them, the only way to save the Imperium is to stop all the threats. That means killing each race in the 40K universe.

Not sure you can say that this is the biggest threat or that is the biggest threat as to be honest, each attacking race is adding another nail into the coffin that is the Imperium.

Although this would never happen for obvious reasons, the best solution would be to ally with other races and fight together against the enemies. Imperials, Marines, Eldar and Tau. Now this might look good on paper, but honestly, do you really think this would or could happen?!?!?!?
I think not
Fluff wise = The Imperium will remain in a constant un-ending battle to survive
Realism = Unless the Imperium does something drastic like "alliances etc" they will eventually become stagnent and dwindle in numbers over many many centuries.

Who says the Imperium needs saving?

A galaxy spanning with 1 million planets under its control, and billions of loyal subjects, hardly sounds like Mankind is on the edge of extinction!

The Eldar Exodites have been living in woods for 30,000 years or something, at the prey of any off-world danger that might come across them (which is everything else i the galaxy except the Eldar and the Tau) and they haven't died out.

The Imperium is stuck in a mire of dogma, and religious oppression. While the machinary of this does keep things moving, and the people safe in most cases, it also stifles and destroys any chance for mankind to move forward and make new discoveries, and makes them slaves to superstition. I think the Emperor was on the right track during the crusade by trying to unite mankind under one banner, and freeing them from religious slavery. There is a reason that human's are the only race not created by the old ones and have managed to beat all of the other races a$$es.

unfortunatly, the imperium will end...it is the law of time itself everything that is created will be destroyed in time. me, i belive its the imperiums constant oppresion of its subjects that will be its own undoing. fear is a powerful force but eventualy fear is learned to be delt with simply because there is nothing left to fear.oppresion and hate will burn itself away as people begin to realize that all they had feared is either dead or false or doesnt even mater and from there a new empire will be born from the ashes. humanity will not fall, that is a fact. we are too many and too spread out for anything to kill us. no, it will be the imperiums own undoing that will end itself.

The IOM is in stalemate position with every race, except maybe the 'nids. Eventually this will totter one way or the other and the chances are not in the IoM's favour.

The main threats are Chaos (from within), Orks, necrons and 'Nids from without.

My plan is big, but will probably not be done as it would mean sacrificing a lot of territory on a risk.

I would create a corridor fro the nids from their current location to the eye of terror.

I would have a 'dead zone' surrounding this corridor so that nid scouts find nothing and (here's the risk) go along the path of easiest gain/least resistance right up to the eye of terror where both sides (chaos and 'nids) will meet and battle each other (hopefully).

Meanwhile, IoM goes on a super military spending spree, more even than it does now, and takes on the winner (or both sides if still extant).

When those threats are dealt with, you should be free to deal with the Ork and Necron threat.

Nothing to stop you allying, temporarily, with Eldar and Tau to bring these plans about before wiping them out too.

Simple.

The big problem with taking a massive stand against one race or even two weakened ones is that it opens holes for any other race to sweep in. Its simply a matter of too many enemies on too many fronts.

My thoughts on races...

Eldar - an annoyance but unable to defeat the imperium, sometimes they ally as well.

Orks - Able to defeat humanity if they worked together but that is impossible so they will always be there

Necrons - just kicking into gear, they might be able to wipe out the imperium in time

Chaos - Realistically I don't think that Chaos can defeat the imperium, it can hurt it catastrophically, but I think the imperium to large and chaos to small to totally defeat humanity

Dark Eldar - give me a break

Tau - Could be a major threat to a subsector but if the segmentum wanted to they could obliterate em

Tyranids - Could wipe out humanity.

What he said. If the scum of the galaxy wish to survive they must denounce that pathetic excuse for a leader and accept true divinity (just some Chaos preaching, not to be taken seriously). It's not as if mankind would be anihalated from existance if Chaos were to take over, Chaos are (mostly) human too, if a bit twisted and tentacled. Although I really don't think Chaos is strong enough to take the Imperium, not yet anyways, they'd need more Chapters to go renegade, they'd also need to stop fighting amongst themselves and unite under one banner (probably Abaddon's) which is something that I don't see happening for a long time.

No but really I think the emperuim is in no danger,and the Tau are at least better then Necrons,Nids and Eldar

The way I see it:
Tau: Far too small to be any sort of threat to the Imperium currently.
Necrons: Although the Imperium usually gets their helmets handed to them fighting these guys, the majority of them are still mostly in hibernation. Adding to the fact that those that are awake are mostly concerned with harvesting rather than conquest, and it's clear the Imperium isn't in too much danger from these guys for the moment.
Orks: Humanity knows the Ork well, and has been fighting these guys since the Age of Science. The imperium has had plenty of time to perfect tactics and breed heroes to fight against them. I say if we've survived against them for, 37,000 years now, the Imperium won't be falling to them either.
Tyranids: An immense threat to the Imperium in my opinion, it's these guys they'll have to worry about the most. Remember, Hive Fleet Kraken was never trully defeated, and still ravages random systems to this day (in a manner of speaking).
Eldar: They don't have the numbers or resources to take on the imperium directly, even if they were interested in foing something like that. As one of the "good" races, they also know that they need the Imperium to keep Chaos at bay.
Dark Eldar: No interest in conquering territory at all. Like the Eldar, they don't have the resources to anyway.
Chaos: I don't really know the current fluff the these guys admitedly. I think they've finally won over the Cadian Gate, but it seems unlikely they'll have the capabilities to take the fight to Terra again soon.

What the Imperium really needs to do is take a leaf out of the Eldar's book and start using the other races to their advantage. The three largest threats to the Imperium are the Necrons, the Tyranids, and Chaos. If they can manipulate the Tyranids to fight the Necrons (or vice versa) like Kryptman did with them and the Orks of Octavius, they'll free up enough resources and firepower to push Abbadon back into the Eye.
