Thanks for the article. That board looks great and makes me keen to get my own one day!

I'm lucky to have an 8x4' pool table that works great for size, is OK for looks with green felt - it would be nice though to play on a nice board like that.

If you flock the whole thing, why bother to paint and drybrush the parts under the flock? Could you just spray it brown and then glue the flock right over the top?

Some times the flock coverage isn't 100% on every square inch. If you see through the grass the ground might as well look good. At least that's what I'm thinking. I've found that out doing some bases lately.

Nice work Panic. This is really making me considering buying the board just so I can paint it up and flock it. I love Devaln Mud to. I always tell everyone around me, just hit that s**t up with some Devlan mud yo! Very grim dark, Devlan Mud. The board looks great. The only thing holding me back is a lack of people in my immediate area to play on it with.

Do you know how it is for travel with you so far?

Nicely done, I was just wondering though, what kind of brush did you use for the drybrushing?

I concur. Especially as you use your table invariably small parts of the flock come loose and if you've taken the time to paint underneath the table will still look fine in these 'thinning' sections.

And PaniC, I agree with everyone else: GREAT article. Loved it.

If I didn't already have a ridiculous amount of foam modular squares I would highly consider getting this GW table as the price doesn't bother me and I like the way it looks.

Thanks for doing this!

Yeah,

I've updated the photos at the end to show the board finnished.

BrookM wrote:Nicely done, I was just wondering though, what kind of brush did you use for the drybrushing?

For Base coating drybrushing the brown and ochre and pasting the glue I used the citadel brush from the Scenery Pack.
for the rock areas painting and drybrushing I used a size 4 brush from a art shop, it's about the same size as the large GW dry brush.

Ozymandias wrote:If you flock the whole thing, why bother to paint and drybrush the parts under the flock? Could you just spray it brown and then glue the flock right over the top?

yeah like others said it's mostly future proofing the board... when the flock wears off it'll look like mud under it...
I think the glue will also bond to paint better than Plastic...

Dexy wrote:Were you able to do the whole thing with 1 scenery pack?

yes I have half a bottle of brown and ochre left, more than half the scorched brown static grass is left over...
the green static is a bit tainted with scorched brown... the brush is a bit hammered from the drybrushing...

if the actual surface is 4' wide sounds like the perfect table to place one of these boards on top of.

I understand painting the board underneath. Just wondering why you painted AND drybrushed. Seems like extra work when one coat of paint (even spray paint) would have done the trick.

No worries though, it's not like drybrushing is that time consuming.

And the board looks great too.

If you put this on top of a pool table, I'd imagine you'd want to put some supports underneath the middle, otherwise, it's the clips bearing all the weight of the figures, terrain, and people reaching over to move stuff. Last thing you'd want is for the middle clips to break and dump everything into the middle of the table.

yeah,
I figured he means the inside area of the pool table is 4' wide... If its not it won't work...

also a quick picture update to show how much static grass was left over when I finnished flocking.
I tried vacuming up the green grass patches before i reclaimed the scorched grass, but you can see that it's a little bit infected with light green grass..

but yeah Loads left over...

The size of the pool table surface is 44 inches, with the entire width of the table 53 inches (LOL - you made me go measure!).

So I guess, yeah, I would need a support - books/ magazines maybe...

Cheers

yeah,
Books etc would never be even enough to support properly...
I think you'd be best to have some boards to cover the table... some 4'x2' boards would work, you could store them under the pool table...

If you don't like the clips, what you could do is tack or glue some thin strips of wood along the sides of your table, so that once all the sections are in, they wouldn't be able to slide around. I'm planning to do that when I make my modular board. And some cutouts in the corners, so that when you're ready to remove them you can just stick a finger through underneath and pop them out. That GW board looks great, even better with all the work you did on it, but It's still out of my budget. Of course, I did hear at my local gaming store that it was because they screwed up and had them shipped by air instead of water as usual. Figures that they'd pass on their foul-ups to the customers.

Your board looks fantastic! Thanks for the walk through.

I have just picked up the board and am new to flocking. I'm curious if after flocking the scorched on each tile did you put blobs of pva down for the lighter green flock? Or do you just sprinkle it and it sticks to what is there? I want an even playing surface.

Also worried about having to be quick with the pva/flocking do you have to rush the painting of pva?

yeah,
I just sprinkled a little extra pools of glade green flock ontop of the scorched flock, and what sticks sticks.
which wasn't that much.

yes be quick when painting and flocking, you can't waste time when your painting the PVA glue.

make sure you have plenty of space to set the tiles out to dry over night. then lightly spray varnish..

Mine has lived up to a massive ammount of use and i'm showing little wear or tear... so far

I did mine in Devlan Mud with an overpaint of thin PVA to get it a little wet looking - only odd bits of flock on mine, mostly wet mud.

The thing that I really disliked was the skull pits. To cover them up, I painted very thick black acrylic into them to hide the detailing and then filled them with scenic water.

Awesome board, well done! Some comments of my own: Use a kitchen seive to get the lumps out of the static grass as you scatter it. Use a thin wash of watery pva to fix the grass after scattering. keep the sienna and umber colours from the scenery set to match in all your other terrain bases.

Just been down to my "shed" to take some pics of my current set up but as it is late at night here the light is not good so I may need to re do them once tthe sun is out again.

I used 50/50 PVA & Water but it seemed a bit watery. IS that why it was a bit patchy? I'm not too worried as it actually looks natural and not like a golf course

yeah,
Shuttler It looks good.

I've just finnished updating my hills to match the board, being smaller I used a 80% glue 20% water mix,
It dried quicker but the effect was pretty similar...
I'll be updating this article with tutorial/photos of the hills at the week end.
It's pretty similar though!

I'm already wondering what ot add next I play LOTR and 40k mostly I like the idea of some 40k buildings but not so sure about on a flocked board how to integrate them. Maybe an abandoned chapel or something.

Went with flocked as its more generic for different games, although already i want a second board hehe

Any idea on scenery pieces other than hills?

Love the new Valkerye but dont collect imperial guard, maybe it would be a nice set piece/objective

I know this is a long time coming, but I did actually get round to finishing the RoB using this technique and I'm pretty happy with it

Only thing i did differently was add some water effects to the skull pits
