Eddie Murphy is the Riddler? Count me out. Doesn't anyone quit while they are ahead?

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/bizarre/article2048300.ece

FUNNYMAN EDDIE MURPHY will play The Riddler in the next Batman movie, The Sun can reveal.
The Beverly Hills Cop star, 47, has been signed up by British director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN to reprise the role played by JIM CARREY in 1995’s Batman Forever.

Gotham villain ... Eddie Murphy

The surprise move follows speculation linking Pirates of the Caribbean star JOHNNY DEPP to the part.

The film, set for a 2010 release, is being developed under the working title Gotham.

Execs have also signed up rising Transformers star SHIA LABEOUF, 22, to play Robin.

CHRISTIAN BALE will return as Bruce Wayne, while MICHAEL CAINE will again play Bruce’s assistant Alfred.

Meanwhile, Brit RACHEL WEISZ is said to be up for the Catwoman role.

Insiders also revealed to The Sun the flick will end on a cliffhanger over whether Batman survives a blast at Wayne Towers.

Nolan had been tight-lipped about the future of the Batman films after being rocked by the January death of HEATH LEDGER — tipped to receive a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker in Batman Returns.

A film insider said: “Chris wasn’t sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion.

“Eddie’s a fantastic addition. Everyone’s excited to see what he does as the Riddler.

Meh. It's from the Sun. I say ignore it.

They also claimed the Rani was in Series 3 of Doctor Who, and aren't generally noted for their accuracy! And why leak the ending as well?

This is the biggest steaming pile of ing concerning the Dark Knight sequel I have EVER heard.

This is even more ridicolous than Cher as Catwoman.

Christopher Nolan wouldn't even touch something like that with a 10 foot pole.

edit: superherohype already stated it's completly BS and those people know their stuff.

2nd edit: Alon Horn, the President of Warner Bros said that they do everything they can to get Chris Nolan back on board because thy respect him and his vision for the Batman-Universe so mch.

Somebody please lock this Thread ASAP

On the subject of Robin, I'd far rather see him as a Batman wannabe, already dedicated to Vigilantism, than someone Batman urges that way. A decision Batman makes to avoid the youth falling into the same pits he did when he was younger.

More a loose alliance than firm sidekick.

I don't believe this for a second. Didn't Christian Bale say he would leave the franchise is Robin were added?

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

I cannot see the current movies including robin in any way shape or form. It's too dark, and thats a huge peice of their charm.

Robin by nature, brightens the atmosphere if even just a little bit with the wisecracks that come part and parcel with the character. That has no place in the current atmosphere of the movies currently.

Right now everyone wants another Batman movie so bad that anyone with access to a keyboard is typing up anything they can as a rumor to claim they have the exclusive scoop for the movie. What is really sad though is people are believing it. Nolan is not signed on again for a third movie and has pretty much stated that he wants to do an entirely different movie first before even thinking about another Batman movie. Until Nolan is signed on again everything is just pure BS.

That all sounds... different. Eddie Murphy I am not a fan of as the Riddler... But I also thought that Jim Carey would destroy the role and he did really well, so I could be wrong. Shia as Robin? There must be a lot of call for the green tight'ed one to go 'No no no no!' in this film!

I was about to swear off the film in the opinion that its existance would destroy the experience of the previous ones... until I read Rachel Weisz as Catwoman... mmmm tight leather catsuits...

Its a rumor, and a funny one at that (open up the article for an artist's interpretation of Murphy as the Riddler tee hee) I don't see the issue.

Edit: Ooh Ohh, who thinks Cheney will have a cameo as the Penguin?

Before anyone bites on this, stop and think for *one second.* Do those casting choices in any way line up with what Nolan's done on the first two films? No? Then I think we can safely say it's a bunch of bunk.

This is why TDK won't win the Oscar. People still don't take Nolan or the franchise he's created seriously.

I really don't know what can come next. We can guess on villains all day long but each film had a theme and subtext and I'm trying to think what could be explored next ideologically and which villain would best be used to explore it. It was stated before that the Joker would carry over into a third in some way and with Ledger dead that adds another hurdle to the whole thing. I don't expect to hear anything about a follow up for a long time.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

The thing is, much as Batman is DC's only good Hero, the Joker is their only good Bad Guy.

With the performance put in by Ledger, you can't really follow it up with another actor in the same roll. Indeed, even if Ledger hadn't died, even he wouldn't have been able to reproduce the same malevolence. It was a one off performance if you ask me.

Better now that Bale and Nolan walk away from the franchise. Job is done, let some other mug ruin it. The old going out with a bang!

Indeed.

When Dark Knight premiered there were rumors of Johnny Depp as Riddler, Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin. Apparently, Angelina Jolie actually expressed her own interest in the role of Catwoman though. All of which would perform superbly in those roles.

If there's a 3rd film to be had, I can't help but think that William Fichtner will return. For those of you who aren't familiar with him I'd rank him as C-List, but capable of better. He played the bank manager who got gassed by the Joker. I'm wondering if the gas had some effect in creating a new villain?

Also... let's not forget Lucius Fox's statement about Batman's armor being able to protect against CATS. It makes me think someone writing a script somewhere sees a way to incorporate Catwoman into the story.

I could actually see a Dick Grayson cameo in a third film. Possibly as a Bludhaven cop transferring to Gotham PD? I think any appearance by Robin (Maybe Nightwing instead?) would have to wait for a 4th film though. Although they did get excellent mileage out of Two-Face even though his villainous escapades were significantly shorter than Joker's. I think a "Boy Wonder" is out of the question though.

I was highly skeptical of the Dark knight but it exceeded even my highest hopes. It's better put together than even the best of the comics.
I would hope that next one had a non rogues gallery villain. To be honest, the rest of them are all too weak to use in the sort of films Nolan is making. They wouldn't work. I'd like to see a "batman vs. the police while fighting wierdo crime" film done right.

I would love to see the Question done right on film- a true vigilante to Batman's pseudo-good guy role.

Anyway, to the OP, the story is total B.S.

Why? That would be not be a good move. Would you let someone spoil something that you built from the ground up?

Nolan clearly set up the third (and hopefully last) installment of his Batman reboot with the Dark Knight. It would be a crying shame if he was to not be onbaord with the next film as wraier/director.
