They got rid of them, which is a shame. If you can't go to a GT or didn't want to pay the costs, and if you wanted to enjoy Gamesday and play a competitive game...
For me, there's nothing to do at Gamesday anymore...been to like 9 of them, nothing changes, but the tournaments always provided fun for me. GW will be losing about 120 tickets at what...60-80 dollars a pop...probably chump change to them.
|
.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |

It may well be a temporary thing for just this year. Only time will tell.
I for one never liked playing in them because it was just TOO LOUD (I think standard GTs are bad enough when it comes to decibel level), but obviously those players who do enjoy them are definitely going to miss 'em.
I personally agree with your statement of there not being much reason to go to GTs anymore, unless you're looking to buy some Forgeworld stuff.
I really think GW needs to carefully plan how many GTs they are going to hold worldwide and sync up their news releases better to fit with those GT dates. Every single GT around the world should have a major-ish news or model announcement. If that means having less GTs just to make sure that every GT has a major announcement then so be it, IMHO.

It probably cost them more to set up and run than they made (a tax loss is still a tax loss), but the c/ba beancounters probably want them to limit their lossmaking.
It's been like that here for the last year and a half. Woo, we're trendsetters.

Wow. So they just snuffed one of their marquee events housed at a marquee event? Are they hoping that the RTT'ers are just going to participate in the GD? I dunno, but something tells me that a LOT of people who went to GD went to participate in the GD RTT. JHall or davetaylor, any insight?

Didn't davetaylor part ways with GW, or was that one of the other worthies who deigned to post here? There's a few of the guys cool enough to do it, always appreciated.
As far as the topic, it's just because we don't matter. The tourney goers are fringe, so it makes sense that if and when GW ever has to do any economic belt-tightening, people in it for the game will take the first hits.
I really hate to have to type that kinda crap. I wish it weren't so.

davetaylor did get his walking papers; just before the Holidays, I believe. There's a thread somewhere, and eventhough he can't talk about it, he gives the air of no ill-will towards the Hobby. JHall's input into things is most appreciated too. But since things are determined so far in advance, maybe dt or JH have some insight into the mindset of the hive-mind decision. Or at least an educated guess. Theirs would be better than most.

The numbers were extreamly low for the GamesDay RTTs this past year. Chicago being the worst with only 20ish people participating.
All I can say to you guys is if you do not want events to fade into history then get out there and participate.
To answer a previous question, yes it does cost GW money to hold events such as GamesDay and the Grand Tournaments.

Yes it would be. As you probably did not see in my introductory post I am merely an event staffer for GW. I have a normal day job and take the weekends off to judge for them during the GTs and GamesDays.
I do have a few close contacts from working the events so if you really want to know then I can do some digging. I am sure the 09 Golden Demon stuff is just a test of the layout or a mistake.

There's a two-way street here. If GW wants participation, they have to make it worth participating.
I attended Chicago's this year. There was no prize support. That's pretty harsh for a tournament that we paid $50 to enter. Considering the amount of swag that they give away across games day, and the huge heaps of prizes they had on hand for the fantasy 'ard boyz final, you would think that they could scrounge up a few prizes for the tournament.
And, I'm sure from their book-keeping standpoint, we didn't pay $50, we paid $40 for a Games Day ticket and $10 for the tournament. But, from the perspective of the tournament players, our games day ticket didn't let us do any of the games day stuff because we're in the tournament all day. That's a $50 tournament. And, even with only 20 players, 20 people times $50 is $1000 in tournament admission fees. (My guess is closer to 30ish, as there were people on table 16, but for argument's sake, lets go with 20) . To have no prize support... They should be embarrassed. I've been to free tournaments held in GW stores with as few as eight players and they still manage to hand out a gift card to the winner.
I'm sure that flying the judges in wasn't cheap though, so maybe that's what we were paying for. No offense to you Clay, you and the other judges did a great job, but honestly, good judges aren't going to make or break a Games Day tournament. I don't see why they couldn't have scrounged up some locals (either GW employees, or Chicago local outriders) to serve as judges rather than flying you in, and take the cost of your plane tickets and turn that into some prize support.

With the merger of Games Workshop US and Canadian operations your going to see some changes in the approach GW takes to North American events. This is just the beginning. They have a vision and I trust that Allen, GoGo, and John Shaffer will make it happen. Hopefully it will end up being the best of both worlds .. GW Canada had some interesting things going on event wise and vice versa.
Yes RTT’s at Games Days are gone. Games Day are getting back to basics and gearing up to a “celebration of the hobby” and I bet they got some exciting stuff planned. RTT’s at Games Days never made a ton of sense anyways… to loud to play…and although the area was roped off at times .. you always had a crowd .. and some child coming along picking up your models without asking etc.. it was always an afterthought to the event at hand.
Back in the day .. I went to GD’s to get the scoop, attend the seminar for releases etc.. and the last few years to pick up the resin crack I needed like some herion junkie.... not to play in the RTT. Course with the every shrinking window of silence and no comment .. the scoop has been less and less but who knows maybe some of that will change.
The price change for the 2009 GD’s is nice as well. I guess let’s see what changes come ..and how well things are done… I got some faith left.

IMO, killing RTTs for a year and rethinking the entire concept of Tournament play is probably a good thing for "The GW Hobby" (tm).
The first question, is whether Official RTTs actually promote the hobby the way that GW wants it promoted. And if not, what do they want to be promoted?
I suspect that the amount of WAAC at things like Ard Boyz, UK GT Heats probably has GW's head spinning. When the GW designers look at the army lists, there is probably a lot of teeth-gnashing and self-flagellation, to plaintive cries of "Nooo..., they're not supposed to play that way..."
Cutting the weight of Battle, and revising prize support will go a long way towards making future RTTs better reflect GWs true emphasis on hobby, sports and Fluff over simple Battle.

I'm not as concerned about the loss of the GD RTT, although I do think that they added some atmosphere to GD overall. However, I am pretty ticked that there's no GDLA (or anywhere on the West Coast for that matter) this year. Attendance didn't seem to be all that different this last time from other times past. I was actually thinking about taking my son this year for the first time....

I think Chess has even less options in terms of viable army lists.
All of them seem to be about the same:
HQ
1 King
1 Queen
Elite
1 Knight
1 Knight
Troops
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
1 Pawn
Fast
1 Bishop
1 Bishop
Heavy
1 Rook
1 Rook
And there's no cover on the board.
Boring!

Exactly.
You take what *you* like from the game, whether it's the Minis, Fluff, or even (gasp!) the Rules.
If you don't like certain aspects, don't do it.
If GW doesn't want to promote certain aspects of The GW Hobby ( tm), apparently, they're not beholden to do so, either.

They are actually saving money by having us there. We cost less than having a full time employee staff the event.
They dont fly us in, we travel there, and we drive because it is much cheaper. I drove to Chicago and Baltimore 2 times this year and flew to LA and Vegas.

The amount of staff and energy (high) that went into running the RTTs at Games Day given their attendance (low) was too disproportionate to continue. There are a lot of other events that time and energy could go into that we can make better use of. However, we will be approaching local clubs to see if they'd like to host and run various levels of tournaments (for various game systems) at Games Day. More than one way to skin the cat.
Also note, the ticket price is $25.

I am a regular Gamesday Volunteer just like Clay. I took time off of work and paid out of my own pocket to drive to Chicago AND Baltimore last year, and I am doing it again this year. Why? Because I want to. I enjoy the hobby, in all its forms, and losing a tournament to keep the GD format around is a small thing if we all still have a good time...And I for one know I will.
