As a guy with hair, I feel kind of offended and left out that just about every space marine sgt. is a bald, shouting man. There are lots of us quieter guys with hair that could lead a band of marines as well as any loud, bald guy. It seems like the only guys with hair in any 40k leadership position are wimpy IG guys.
Why doesn't GW have more diversity in this region? Why are guys with hair so under represented?

The sheen off a bald head helps blind enemy combatants in close combat.

Because keeping hair of any length clean while in the field is a pain in the butt. (Quick aside... Honestly I don't see why some current European armies allow their troops to have long hair. Not only does it pose a hygene problem, but it looks damned unprofessional!)

But not ALL sgts have shaved heads. I've got some old assault marine figures with mohawks and wild unkept hair....dyed unnatural colors of course!

#1 if women can have long hair and don't need to shave thier heads in boot camp then neither should guys.

#2 If females can take long hair into the field and its not some huge "hyene problem" then it should go for males as well.

#3 The only time it CAN become an issue is during a war when you have no clue when your next shower will be. In which case it only takes a few minutes to buzz before your plane takes off.

#4 We used to allow our men to have long hair in the military. Why it was changed last century is unknown. It looked professional on Custer didn't it? George Washington? So what is the problem?

This was one of the things I HATED about the military. I hated having to get my haircut every two weeks. I hated fades and they looked like stupid trendy preppy cuts. blah. Im glad IG sgts. have thier hair.

Ehh...the examples relating to female soldiers are not particularly valid as the grooming standards for them were shaped by societal norms for women and female self image rather than military practicality. And yes, female soldiers have a hell of a time keeping clean in the field due to their long hair. (not to mention the whole "feminen hygene: aspect, which I will not go into..)

Actually, no it didn't.
He caught alot of grief for his long hair.

But I'll get off my soap box here. I have a real hate on for long hair on men. (one of the best times I have at work is when we get to hold down and give a force haircut to some clown who refuses to cut his hair!)

Hair is normally a young man's disease. Everyone balds eventually. Regardless an unchanging immortal might, after a few hundred years of sweating under or clipping the stuff, want to permanently depilate.

Well, yes actually.
I suspect you would be horrified to see what happens to fools who get sent to prison and then refuse to submit to the required head shaving for the ID photo. (one of the handful of times you can legally use force to make someone cut their hair in my State's agency)
But as in the case above the intelligent long hairs cut their locks off BEFORE they arrive at basic training or the prison intake facility to avoid the discomfort and time involved with the barber.

As a former long-haired dude, it's not as cool as you think it is. Unless you are Fabio or a manly, burly man who can rip people in half, long hair just makes you look like a pansy.

Other then hygienic reasons , i thought long hair is frowned upon due to these reasons?

-easier for your enemy to grab a hold of your head , hard tug will easily damage your neck .
or if someone comes from behind you, they can easily tug your head back and easily slit your throat.

-unless you tie it back, it can obscure your view or when wind blows.

-if its dirty and all tangled up, wouldnt it catch branches easily when you are sneaking around the forest?

-it might get caught in machinery. jammed in your weapons?

Anyway, I think the reason that so many Space Marine sergeants are bald is because when they DO actually have hair, it ends up being a grey flat-top crew cut with a horrible widow's peak. I think I would go the bald route, as well.

Actually, I've been in corrections for 17 years so I should know.
In my state it's like you describe for those who are actually in the system. However due to having to have a good indentication photo all incoming inmates must have their heads shaved and force can be used to gain compliance. As someone who currently is the intake supervisor at my facility it happens a few times a year when we get some clown is who wants to buck the system.

If that's so in your state, I would hate to live where you do.

Spare me the pop psycology (spelling), bud. It's a deeply ingrained adversion that grew from a military oriented background. I've never had my hair more than about an inch long at any time in my life. It's something that while in high school got me a small amount of grief as I grew up in the '80s when long hair on males was regrettably the fashion.

well corrections is a different world. You deal with criminals. Soldiers are not criminals but it seemed we at times had less rights than criminals.

ex: Fort bliss, TX 1999. El Paso county prison was supposed to have thier prisoners come in and "Landscape" a 2 miles perimiter, 10 ft wide (105,600 sq ft) area around our motor pool with red rocks. As grass does not grow in El Paso, AKA HELL'S PISS HOLE AKA butthole of America.. Anyways El Paso county corrections said it was too INHUMANE. So they made US DO IT!!! Our comander even made the officers do it!! And of course HE COLONEL LUND was nowhere to be seen the entire time.

My point. Do not compare prisoner's to soldiers please.

Also, I do not like having long hair either. I did in high school but I hate it now. I like side burns and at least a little hair on the sides. Just enough to finger comb. But thats not good enough for the military. Whatever.

There's a head on the Dark Angels sprue with a full, lush head of hair, and a grim, icy demeanor, if that's your thing.

Hahah, I never meant to turn a thread about why Space Marines have bald heads into a "My time in jail" discussion. But my brain is just itching to clear some things up, so here goes nothing.

Apparently, the State of Kansas is perfectly fine with pulled back hair for a mugshot (and I'm not talking county), as that's all they asked from me. After spending about a month in an integration pod (This should sound pretty familiar), they give you two options (if your hair is anywhere over half an inch long). Either cut your hair and go to open population, or go to seg. So, I went to seg. Took me about two months before I finally said screw it.

Self defense is not self-inflicted. I don't mean to sound like a dick, but spare me the CO psychology. Trust me, I've heard some variant of that a thousand different times, due to something that honestly wasn't my fault. I'm sure you hear that one a lot too.


@ smart_alex: Wow, at first glance, that's pretty terrible. But I'd like to think that the biggest reason the county didn't want to pick up a landscaping job with inmates is because landscaping obviously takes a LOT of people, and since a lot of inmates in county have yet to be convicted, I'm fairly sure that they can't use any sort of lethal force threat to keep them from trying to run. And yes, even in El Paso, I'm sure at least one person would run. Possibly, the county just needed another reason? I don't really know.

Some of the Space Wolves have hair. This is mainly so that they can save food and spilled beer for 'ron' (as in 'later on').

I've had one haircut since I was fifteen. If I ever needed to cut my hair I would. Seems like a pretty simple issue to me.

I leave the helmets off of my heavy weapon guys. You don't need restricted vision, and you sure as hell don't need a concussed dude who just 'survived' a heavy stubber round to the head swinging a plasma cannon around. He's better off dead.
