I guess I will say that long hair can combine with other factors to give a feminine look, but the hair itself isn't enough. How the long hair is worn probably has a lot to do with it too.
It's not as far as a stereotype really. It's just a 'prominent image' that men have short hair and women have longer hair.
If I wanted to do a female model an easy way to make her look more female would be to lengthen the hair right?
Femeninty can also be used in an effort to make a character seem good or bad. For example the emporer is shown to have longer hair while horus is shown to have shorter hair.
It's all to do with our cultural identifications of what the look of a person tells us. Whether the prominent identifications are wrong, doesn't change that they are prominent.

Well, you always have to take social norms into account. I'm sure when some of you guys were growing up in the 60s/70s/80s you had pretty cool people wearing long/big hair. When I was growing up in the mid '90s and '00s, long hair usually meant: theater/emo fags, the weird pokemon nerds, and the guy who thinks wolf shirts are chic. Reference: Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. And I was one of the nerds who thought it looked cool too.
Here are some men demonstrating their manliness with short hair and various testosterone created moustache/beard combinations.
Yeah those guys look pretty manly. Where do I sign up? Do they have a newsletter?

Don't hate long hair, cause your too much a a bi*** to grow out your hair long and get in a fight, tha's just a di*k move.
Don't hate short hair, they feel insecure enough already. Let them think their more masculine.
And that stuff about girls with short hair looking like dudes and so on and so forth, read Witchblade 120+122, that'll definately make you think. Given most of them are most likely lesbo, but that's beside the point.

well that was all well put and un-offensive wasn't it. I think I'll just ask girls what they think rather than read a sci fi book written by males.
