Traditionally, long hair is a sign of strength and virlity.

Take from that what you will. But me, I like my hair long. Even if it does clog up the plughole in the bath...

I figured it was because the small helmets didn't allow the top knots seen in orks, chaos, tau, and some older Eldar models. Now if SMs had helmets like Eldar guardians I'm sure Mr. Goodwin would be sculpting top knots on SM sergeants.

I've been salt&pepper for a decade, and lately, it seems the salt is starting to take over. I'm mostly glad to still have a full head of hair. It think it'd be nice to have a full head of white hair - I'd like to grow that out into a long ponytail.

But you actually dye your hair? You know that's the equivalent of a bald guy wearing a toupee...

Don't really care. It's my natural colour, so it doesn't look daft. I dye the beard as well.

I would have it in a more vivid playful colour, but work won't allow (I occasionally have to deal with clients face to face) so plain old black it was.

I use a Scwazhkopf colour system. Good and permanent, though the roots could do with a touch up, and the beard needs it again.

Oh, and the 80's weren't much fun in Britain. 10 years too long of Thatcher humping everywhere that wasn't the South East. Been through former Welsh Mining Villages. Desolation barely describes what I saw there.

If you're going grey, grey is your normal colour you chump. Still at least grey hair looks distinguished, balding looks washed out. /also getting grey hair

My hair isn't long anymore, I got tired of waking up blind.

You're all asking the wrong question, the question is why all the unhelmeted Space Marines don't wear their helments. The answer is because without some hair to act as a buffer their helmets chafe their noggins.

I started going grey in high school (which was the 80s) when I had long hair. Unlike many people who go grey, Mine didn't start at the temples, but centre scalp, and grew out as a stripe (my original hair colour was a very deep brown-black). I had the nickname "skunk" at school for the stripe.

Of course, it being the 80s, and Goth being in, the white stripe was also kinda cool. Pity I wasn't.

Am I the only one out here who would fire most of the SM Sergeants?

I mean seriously, if you make it through a couple hundred years of warfare, I don't think it's too much to ask for the person leading a squad to be smart enough the wear a helmet.

That is why, if you have screaming baldies, you should model them with their helmet hanging on their belt...

Eh, what 40k really needs is more beards, pretty much the only beards I see are on Space Wolves and very odd orcs. I mean seriously, screaming bald looks so much better with a thick manly beard!!!

Erm, isn't the opposite true? Long hair is usually a sign of femininity. Short hair and baldness is more a sign of virility and testosterone.

Anyway theres one simple reason models have bald heads. It's a military haircut.

You should read up more on your ancient and not so ancient history good sir. In many cultures the warriors either had long hair as a symbol of status (Samurai) or all men wore it long (a generally more germanic and gallic thing.)

I've no need. I'm talking about modern western history. baldness and short hair is traditionally a military haircut. It is also a sign of virility and testosterone (I would wager the last two hundred action films have featured far more leading males with short hair rather than long, because of just that reason). In other cultures it may be different, but in the west the links are there, hence the reason the skinhead look has been adopted by militant nazis, 9 in 10 bouncers i see every friday night etc. etc.

Oh and I also support your call for more beards btw.

Long hair was de rigeur for western military men from the 16th century until the mid-19th. Check up details on Hussar uniform.

The military = short is quite a modern development.

Bouncers (and security and cops) are all bald so that people don't grab them by the hair in a fight.

Less than an inch of hair, and it can't be done.

Same reason they don't wear neckties...

ok so why is it most I see and have met adopt the 0-4mm length hair rather than anything up to 1 inch?

It doesn't matter what was the rule in history. Are cultural conceptions of testosterone, virility etc. are based on the world around us, the modern images. In the modern day (for whatever reason) the military, the police, boncers etc. generally have short haircuts, as such it has become a prominent image of testosterone. I see it all the time, I hardly meet any girls these days who say they prefer longer hair and I would argue the majority of them are attracted to virile men.

That is the reason the sculptors have given them that look, as it gives those connotations. Long hair can give feminine connotations, not the look you want on a model which needs to look like he can command an army. Whether or not you prefer that is up to you, but that is the reason.

Are you saying that the the long hair on Space Wolves, Orks, and other long-haired male models gives them feminine connotations? The Space Wolves are one of the most masculine, manly chapters in existence, and tons of them have long hair.

This thread is ridiculous. I feel sillier now for having participated in it.

No I said long hair CAN give a feminine look. I can not see how you can argue against that. Do you prefer bald women? No you don't because it makes them look like men, why does it make them look like men? Because shorter hair is generally associated with males/testosterone etc. Thats my point. The space wolves have wild beards, also an image of testosterone.

I think some women look gorgeous with short hair, although no, I don't "prefer" bald women. It's not because it makes them look like a man though. I've seen plenty of long-haired women who have what most people would consider a masculine look, and plenty of short haired guys who look feminine.

Of course, that has a lot to do with stereotypical views on what is masculine and feminine, and this thread just seems to be encouraging more of that.

I guess I will say that long hair can combine with other factors to give a feminine look, but the hair itself isn't enough. How the long hair is worn probably has a lot to do with it too.
