Subject: Traitors of Sanctus Fornax (The Lost and the Orky) Update 03/22/10

So, it's time to finally use some of the pictures I have been uploading to the gallery and chitter chat about my new army project for the winter, the Lost and the Orky.
The plan is to make a Lost and the Damned force consisting of industrial hive muties, and traitor guard with leadership provided by a detachment of Word Bearers. Mostly the reasoning behind choosing the project was I wanted a non-power armor army, but I REALLY wanted to biggerize some chaos marines. In general, I wanted to get my hands dirty making piles of custom vehicles and mutants. Also, I wanted to have a more assault and armored vehicle oriented army than either my Sisters or Marines.
For rules, I went with the Ork Codex, figuring I could get swarms of gribblies, tough, ramshackle tanks, and some big hardassed fellows for the CSM boys to stand in as. The fact I could take a pretty tough psyker was a nice touch too.
So here is the list I am building towards:
2000 pts
HQ:
Warboss, Mega Armor, Attack Squig (biggerized Terminator Lord)
ZogWort (Rogue Alpha Psyker)
Elite:
Snikrot, 9 Kommandos, 2 burnas (sneaky... cultist... guys...)
Troops:
5 Meganobz, kombi-scorcha (Biggerized terminators)
Battlewagon, extra armor, big shoota, red paint, deathrolla (Big tank/armored truck thing)
Shoota mob, 19 shootas, 2 rokkits, Powerklaw Nob (Traitor guard/mutants)
Trukk Mob, 11 sluggas, 1 rokkit, 1 PK Nob w/ Bosspole and heavy armor (Skinny Muties, Marine and priest)
Trukk, red, stickbombs.
Trukk Mob, 11 sluggas, 1 rokkit, 1 PK Nob w/ Bosspole and heavy armor (Skinny Muties, Marine and priest)
Trukk, red, stickbombs.
Trukk Mob, 11 sluggas, 1 rokkit, 1 PK Nob w/ Bosspole (Skinny Muties, Big Mutie and priest)
Trukk, red, stickbombs.
Fast:
Zagstruck, 10 stormboyz (Summoned Flying Daemony things)
Heavy:
2 Killcannon Battlewagons with hardcase.
So that's the general plan. The trukk mobs are planned out (and nearly done) as is one of the battle wagons. I am currently having trouble with the kommandos and the daemons, mostly just a question of what models and bits to use. The shoota mob is also giving me creative block. The terminators will probably be next, even though modifying them with all their detail will be tricky...
Next post, pictures!

So, here's the work done thus far:
Biggerized Marines
A big reason for even starting this project is that I wanted to biggerize some chaos marines, but I did not want to make a whole army out of them. Not only would that be a mess of work, but chaos is not really my thing, and I don't need a 3rd power armor army.
The Plan: Cut into the shins, thighs, fore and upper arms of the marines. Insert plasticard into the cuts, as well as between the front and back half of the torso, between the torso and legs, under the feet and at the neck. Green stuff over. ? . Profit.
Kind of rough going, but after terminally screwing up a pair of legs, I got the hang of it.
Here's the size difference:
Not huge, but a good head taller than a normal marine. Just tall (and a little more lanky) enough that they stand out.
The other CSM nob, I went a little overboard with...
another shot:
I play a lot of tau... and this was just too much fun to turn down
Now, I have put some paint on them so far, mostly as a test of the color scheme since I never painted Word Bearers before and am only sort of certain of what they look like...
I am fairly happy with the general look. He will of course have ridiculous levels of attention lavished upon him later, but for now, he watches over the growing horde of grey plastic mutants...
Test mutie
The little skinny muties in the trukk mobs are really going to be the defining part of the army, or at least I think. There will be a lot, and they will look very different from any official 40k models, so I wanted to get a good system down for them. Because, oh my god... there are a LOT of them...
The general pattern I am using for the little sluggas is a WHFB ghoul body, Pig Iron Kolony head, and then some randome pistols and melee weapons.
Here's the basic look:
Of course there are still details to be pulled out, but that is the 75%, couple of hours spent version. The skin is very quick en masse, and the details are few enough that I am confident the other 29 of the buggers I am working on will get done quickly.
Those left to be finished... I am still coming to grips with just how massive these 2000 points are going to be... These 3 units of boyz are going to have more models than nearly my entire Marine force.
Priests and Big Muties
One small deviation from the normal ork layout is I am putting the Boss Pole on one of the counts as sluggas, and modeling him as a priest. It just looks cooler to have a somewhat less fallen guy hoising an icon than having the CSM doing anything other than looking cool with scary power fists. Also, I didn't want to have all the Nobs be CSM, as I wanted to play around with making some big muties.
So, yea, those kind of speak for themselves. The ogre mutie has some preliminary painting on him.
So those are the boyz so far, at least the ones I am happy with. The gallery has some of the boyz I am still working on, or not happy with, as well as some of the vehicles. I will post about them tomorrow maybe.

I like the small mutants, and those priest like things (especially the one with the Tyranid head), however the big mutants just look like Ogres to me. How about trying to make some mutants using Orks, Chaos and various human bits together? Or maybe even try to get the mutants by Troll Forged, the big ones are cool!

That...is awesome.
The Word Bearers scheme is spot-on.
Those mutants with the gasmasks are some of the coolest-looking models I've ever seen. Though I do have to say, the "mutated Ogre", though the shoulderpad is a cool addition, just looks like an Ogre with a boltpistol. I also have to add that the Tau hanging from the CSM's claw looks very unnatural. Maybe model the legs a bit? Right now he just looks like he's standing on air.

What about CSM squads and counting them as Ard Boys or Skarboys?
Lootas in the form of mutants with heavy weapons on them (Obliterators?). Smaller mutants could count as Grots!
You could even include some form of strange mutant cavalry and count them as bikers.

The skin on the ogre looks really good, just the right amount of unhealthiness visible.
The small mutie is lookig good, the conversions are not apparent in the painted fig, which is always good in my books.
Excellent stuff, hope to see more soon.

Very inspired army!
If you want to get some special models, consider the ash wase nomads from Necromunda. Lots of low tech guys in hoods, and a sh!tload of pistol and cc weapons.

Malika: Yea, I had heard the same from some other people about the Ogre mutie. I guess for me, not really playing fantasy and not being used to just how big those ogres are, it appeals to me.
As to CSM in a full unit, other than the Meganob terminators, I don't really have a plan for a full squad of CSM. I had knocked around the idea of doing a nob squad with heavy armor for them, and maybe I still will, but for the moment they are merely inciters and leaders of packs of muties. I had thought of lootas too, but decided that they didn't fit the army as well as I would like, and they were very points heavy for being the only stand and shoot unit. They are another unit I might add later for variety.
The kommandos and shootas are going to feature more ork based mutants mixed in with catachan/cadian based muties. The ogre big mutant will likely be the nob for the shootas. I will link the pic of the shoota with rokkit that is made from an ork in a bit.
Chrysaor: Thanks for the compliment
You point about the tau's legs is a good one. I never really noticed till now, but the fact that his feet are both flat against the same plane really gives the impression he is standing on something.
Metsuri and Arctik: Thanks
Commisar: Thanks for the tip! I always forget about Necromunda parts... I will have to look those up. I just ordered some more Darkage and AE WW2 guys to chop up as well.
Warhamster: The skin is done with a base coat of Vallejo Grey White, though after the first I just mixed my white brush on primer with a drop of black to match it, then a 3 step wash process. First, I put on some thinned Leviathan Purple, then a really thinned Thrakka Green, then a thinned Ogryn Flesh. The exact ratio I couldn't tell you (and the first guy is going to look a tad different from all the rest) but "pretty darn thinned" is a good rule of thumb.
You have to be careful with application though, since subsequent layers of wash will dissolve previous layers if they are not 100% dry. Sometimes that is handy, but sometimes it will piss you off royally

Really impressive that after adding in all of those pieces to "biggerize" the marine, none of it is noticeable once it's painted! Nicely done!

Ok, sorry about that, I sort of forgot where my camera and PC were apparently, as I neglected to post a single thing over the weekend. I finished up the 29 other trukker gribblies in an 8 hour, “Oh my god my back is killing me!” painting marathon which contributed to the lack of an update. I will get more photos and post tonight.
At any rate, here are some off the other things in progress.
Battle Wagon #1: Killkannon and hard top:
Sorry if the second image makes your eyes bleed… There are still side skirts to be added, and an armored shield around the gun mount, but this gives you the general idea of scale. It’s a hair longer than a Landraider, and not quite as wide, so I figure the scale is just about right. I don’t really know how 12 guys could fit inside, but it won’t be doing much transporting anyway.
Truck #1:
Pretty basic, and just about the size of a rhino. It is noticeably smaller than the Ork Trukk in the vertical dimension, but only due to the roll bars on the orky model. Otherwise it is a good size. If I could get my hands on another kit or 3 like this, I would do so, but alas, it was another 10$ bargain bin kit find. I am going to use modified ork trucks for the other models, which at least have the benefit of not having 45 part suspension assemblies.
Shoota Boy Rokkit:
This fellow might become the basis for a lot of my other muties, as I am finding the legs make the ork, as it were. I think a mix of muties with the regular ork legs, and then some with legs from other kits will help change their stature and form enough that, with different heads, they won’t scream “greenskin in white face!” Hopefully you agree

Thanks Orkeosaurus ! Glad to hear it I havent' been playing a long time, so things that seem new and cool to me sometimes seem obviously silly to some (like the ogre no one else likes ). It's good to hear that some of the work looks new to the vets!
I still feel guilty about not finishing the GS work on him and the guy with the head. So much so the project is making me lose sleep.

Umm.. I thought that backdrop was something you had worked up just for photography... and i thought you had an entire city table underneath your models.
You had me tricked and it looked awesome!!
Thank you for including the picture revealing the method you used. I will be borrowing heavily
As far as your project goes... man is that a huge scope of a project. All of these different models different sizes etc. Such a cool thing for you to be working on. I bet its never boring.
Love the theme, love the execution, and I hope you can stay focused and that the powers of chaos don't addle your mind to the point of insanity

That's some really really cool ideas you had there. But I'm pretty sure I have seen gasmasks on Ghouls before somewhere on Dakka. I think it was called the Harrowed Demon army project. Anyway, looks great, so who cares if you're not the only one who did it
I like your Rokkit mutant and look forward to see it painted.
The Truck is pretty cool too, I was considering using that model for my Ork army, but it's way to small to transport 12 real Orks
The cannon on your tank is awesome, where did you get it?

Shep: Thanks! I am glad you enjoyed it It was a really fun little photo set up to do, so much so that I am thinking I might have to play around with a few more. As I get more units finished up I will have to do some more “in universe” shots like that.
I gotta say, this project has actually be costing me a lot of sleep. It turns out not knowing what to do with certain unit’s constructing leads to wracking guilt that I didn’t get more done during bed, and thinking about hideous mutants before sleeping leads to nightmares of the worst sort… On the plus side, I am hoping to harness my latent psychic powers shortly, which should help my get things built faster.
Thousandth Son: DO IT! Actually, wait till the new guard stuff comes out so you have some different plastics to work with, then DO IT! I am really hoping they recut the Catachan sprues a bit so that they are more nicely shaped. Even for mutants they are a little odd looking.
Anung Un Rama: You are probably right. I copped the idea for using ghouls from Sickbunny, a guy on another forum. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if I got the gas mask idea off someone here as well and just don’t remember anymore. I had been planning on some sort of traitor LatD force for a long time, so my head is full of half realized ideas, crashing around in a swirl of tattered cloth, bloodied steel and gnashing teeth. I am glad you like them though
I know what you mean about the truck being small; the ork trukk kit is huge! Bigger than a rhino huge. I am thinking I might pull off the roll bars to make it look a tad smaller (and a little less orky) for use in my army. I am going to have to make the third truck more medium sized so it bridges the gap between the two I think.
The cannon on that battle wagon is a 15mm WW2 field gun. I just left off the wheels and the limbers. A cool model all around, made by Italiari I think (or something like that.)

Powered through some painting tonight, for better or for worse.
The mutie nob and 3 priests:
In retrospect, I need to highlight that one chaos banner a tad more... Otherwise, I am rather happy with how they all turned out so far. I had a hell of a time freehanding that book pattern, but after 45 minutes of painting something, painting it white again and starting over, I am pretty happy. Apparently the vile sigils of chaos do not come easily to my faithful hands. Or I just suck at freehand.
Adding them to the previous set up:
Now back to the marines. I tried something that I totally stole from another guy on the forum here. Saddly, I can't find his thread again to give him credit... so if you recognize it, let me know so I can thank him. Especially because I don't think I pulled it off as well...
So, woo, the weekend awaits!

!?: I see what you mean in the pictures, though oddly in person I don't see it as such. I wonder if it is an issue of the angle of the camera revealing the tau's essentially "standing up" posture, which is not noticable from a normal angle... I might have to chop off one of his legs and move it around.
In other news, I glancing through the gallery I happened to find who did the gasmask ghouls before me: Dakka's very own Tinfoil! He used them as mutated horrors for his daemon guard army, and they look sharp! Fortunately his are more mutated and daemony than mine, so they don't compete too hard, but man, I am glad that thread of his is no longer on the front page Go check them out, it's a great gallery!

Sorry I haven't posted anything in nearly exactly a week; there is a painting contest at the FLGS, and the entries were due tomorrow (Friday), which I was unaware of until I picked up the models to paint Saturday morning. So I have been working feverishly on them.
However, I do have the start of old Zogwart done:
