Serious possibilities with that Zoggy counts as, impressive model. I'm also shocked at how in-scale that little skull is - flagellant kit? I think the new marauder cav or skeleton kits have nice skulls like that too, not sure if you've raided those yet.

Salvage: glad you like him! He was part of the Rackham Clearance-gasm from the Warstore a year or so back. I never really knew what to do with him until this project. Tizzy fellow with big cape and raven wings? Oh yes!
The skull is from the flagellants, great eye! He used to be holding a little feather thing, which I was tempted to replace with a conjured warp snake or flames or something, but I am thinking a fresh skull will help make it a little more 40k and take away from the swirly French look. Plus it fit so nice, I said he could keep it.
FPS: Thanks Glad to hear a little encouragement. I keep pushing myself, partly to make the guilt ridden nightmares stop, but also because I am really worried the project will collapse under its own weight. It really helps to hear some encouragement

Speaking of working on, I actually did do a fair amount the past week. Just haven't been posting as much.
I burned out a bit on building after biggerizing the termies, so it was time to play with paint!
First up, TRUKKS! ( wip)
Nothing amazing, but I am glad to see that the paint and rust schemes tie the two rather different styles together. I was a little worried about that. I still need to clean up some details and highlight, as well as picking out the rust. I used the jelly method of spraying on a rusty brown, then slopping on jelly, spraying with a different color (a light gray for me) and then washing off the jelly, leaving uneven splotches. Worked out pretty well, but the red being so dark sort of hurts the effect. So some work to be done there.
I also got a termie and Zoggy started:
and here are some more terminators, plus the playing around start of Snikrot.

Well, true to form it has been about a week since I updated. I didn't do a lot all week, then got a giant pile (relatively) done Saturday and Sunday morning. Enjoy!
Here's the terminator group (mega nobz) with bases pretty much done, and needing some highlighting, but otherwise complete. In the front is the Terminator Lord (warboss) with his mighty cursed crozius and attack daemon. He still has a ways to go, including his cape which I left off to free hand, and highlights etc. Yes, those are pins making up his crozius; they are for stabbing people who claim that isn't a Str10 weapon!
Here's a scale shot with the biggerized marine:
Also, thanks to a pile of tracks from Necros (applaud now!) I finished up building the first shooty battlewagon! Some scale shots:
If you look closely, you will see an eye right where the gunner's coax machine gun would be, and a little tentacle creeping out of a hatch. The fluff aspect has been steadily growing in my brain, and I have decided that the Word Bearers have been running a demi-machine cult, where instead of focusing on summoning daemons, they bind daemons into machines, with results ranging from possessed tanks to mini defilers. If I get really ambitious, I might even make a claw-stompa, defiler style
So, I hope you enjoy! Next up for me is polishing off the termies, and working on their battlewagon/shrine.

Salvage: Well, you left so early Sunday, so I had a bunch of time before having to go take care of the nephew Plus, it took longer to get the crozius together than to basecoat and wash the man himself.
PanzerSmurf: thanks! The banner is odd... it doesn't look so hideous in person, but for some reason the internet makes it radiate chaos evil that the eye finds remarkably abhorrent. Every time I see that picture I want to repaint it.
In other news, I haven't gotten much done for a bit. I hope to get some work done over the weekend though. I have started drawing up schemes for the Lord's Pimp Sled/Battlewagon/Aircraft Carrier. I might get it started, but it will be a big project

Ok, so saying "I haven't posted anything for a bit" is something of an understatement. While I have been getting bits done here and there, I have not really been working much on the boyz this month.
However, with the new IG codex coming up soon, I know I am going to get sidetracked hard core, so it is time to get this army squared away! Today and tomorrow will be dedicated to getting the shoota boyz and kommandos done, and the battlewagon worked on. Until then, here's what I had gotten done in March, but never posted:
The shooty battlewagon is complete!
I know the pictures are not exactly stellar, but I can't find my photo studio, and I don't want to waste an hour trying to find out where my wife has filed it. When I get a chance, probably when I finish the shootas and kommandos, I will get them all together for a nicer pic.
For comparison, and pics of the other thing I was working on, here's the battlewagon next to a baneblade.
And one of the BB by itself:
Now, I have a big pile of traitor guard all put together, scrubbed (bloody FW resin comes packed in vasiline apparently) and drying, awaiting some painting love. I have Snikrot to finish putting together, along with one burna kommando, on the troops side, then the Mega Nobz Battlewagon of Tentacly Doom, as well as another trukk, and another transport or shooty battlewagon... I really hate typing it out like that... makes it seem infinite :(

The gas masks are Kolony Rebel heads from Pig Iron. They have a whole line of really nice head swaps that fit 40k just right. You can't quite see in the pic, but the baneblade commander has a gasmask/peaked cap head from the line. I am going to be doing my entire IG army with them, to tie them into the LatD.

I love your use of the Crypt Ghouls! They look so characterful and gothic. Brilliant work!
I was hoping to pick some up to convert for 40K also, so I was wondering, what hands did you use so they could carry guns? On close inspection they look like they have all kinds of varied hand and weapon swaps (I spy Goff Ork bolt pistols I think, and Necromunda Goliath Laspistols? among others) But at first glance they didn't even look converted at all, so seamless was the change, and you had me zooming in on the GW sight to check the Ghoul hands again xD

Ok... just a small update today, since ChameleonEyes called me up for a game.
First a really crappy pic of the test paint scheme for the kommando:
I don't know why, but my camera is acting a little wonky of late, taking poor quality pics. I am wondering if I didn't change a setting or something without realizing it. Very grainy and questionable color.
Anyway, I keep talking about the terminator's carrier, and here is a teaser of the wip build:
It is going to have a little podium/pulpit on the front for the lord to preach the gospel of the dark gods from, and an altar of some sort in the back, as well as space to seat 5 other terminators comfortably
Bottle: Glad you like 'em! I can't take credit for the idea though; I totally ripped it off from someone else
The hands I used are a bit of a mix. Some are hands from the kit (it comes with about 2x the arms you need) with the bones they were holding hacked off. A good many others are laspistol/chainsword hands from Cadian Sgts and some Catachans. They are extra handy (*rimshot*) because they have the sleeve cuff or wrist band that is good for covering the join.
I think there might be a hand from the Empire Flagellants kit as well in there somewhere, but I don't think I used more than one or two.
One or more (the rokkit boy definitey) I also just melted the fingers a little and forced them around a gun. Not pretty, but also relatively effective when not looked at too closely.

You have been a busy lad, Wehr old chum! Happy to see so many (evil) things painted, particularly ...
Killcannonwagon: Solid stuff! Part of me wishes it were red like the trukk and mini-trukk, but another part doesn't care cause it looks quite nice and also disturbingly realistic. I like the grimdark! touches, like the tauheadskullspike! on the back and the creepyglowingeyeofchaos! on the front. Also, that cute lil' tentacle groping the gun wall.
Baneblade: Not too chaosy, I suggest sacrificing some kittens over it, or at least adding skulls to taste. Oh, it's (quasi-)loyalist? *grumble* I guess it looks nice then, if you swing that way *grumble*
Kommando: Definite possibility, but a bit too early to tell too much. Hoping the red hood pops some, even if these guys are probably supposed to be all subdued and sneaky. Good model for them though.
Deathsquidtermicarrior: Ah! Well it certainly needs something on the back / front to break it up, but otherwise that's certainly a cool thing already. The beak on the squid I'm not such a fan of, would probably prefer a central eye or more of a spiked maw (like on the new spawn, but bigger). This mostly looks like a sidewise duck bill ... S10 quack attak!
I smell more stuff in the pipeline, will be lurking.

Well, I did a decent amount of painting this week despite a whole lot of lost sleep and stress from work. Really, it was merely about 5 hours worth, but I took lots of pictures!
I painted ~12 models, some 8 kommandos and the 5 Shootas shown in the photos. I kind of wanted to plot out a little tutorial on using washes and pre-highlighting to speed paint assembly line style while retaining nice quality. All the pictures were about 3 hours apart start to finish, though I took a break to go to bed in the middle, and painted over twice as many guys as a pictured.
First up, black over the grey/white primer, with thinned black over bits that are not armor (for constrast... the FW models have a LOT of little detail. I wouldn't bother with a straight IG)
Second, I put on a white/grey for the cloth part of the uniform, and added brown to one fellow:
And here are all the guys with brown.
I then highlighted the brown with a lighter "cork brown" on both the boots and the cowl. I note that it is the same color combo because in a minute you will see how using two different washes gives very different results, while only painting one set of color (washing is MUCH faster than painting).
Add some Baal Red:
And slosh on some devlan mud (I did leave out the parts where I added bolt gun metal, highlighted the black, and some weathering... whoops)
Now, as it stands I am going to add some highlights to the cloth (it looks a little muddy from a distance, no pun intended) and finish the bases, but otherwise those 5 boys are done, and in about 3-4 hours or so. Very important if you are doing 20+ of the buggers!
Salvage:
Killkannon wagon: Yes, I am actually avoid red for the vehicles that don't actually have "Red Paintjob" upgrades. Not only for game terms, but also because when I have the IG done in a similar fashion (see baneblade) I want to really drive home that the LatD tanks are perverted versions and chop jobs of the IG gear.
Kommando: Yea, this second batch came out better than the test. I need to lighten him up a bit, and bring out the red more as in the later pics. One big difference is that I didn't highlight his hood nearly so much.
Death Squid: Yea... the beak is killing me. It took hours to get it to look that good. I am thinking I will break down, carve some fangs, and just make a vagina with fangs like every other spawn daemon thing :( I don't need people saying "Aflack" every time it tank shocks a unit.
Well, I am off to the wilds of Central PA for the weekend! See you next week!

*insert fanged vagina + central PA joke here * So: have you seen the new Mythbusters? Holy crap in a hat, great freaking stuff, and I'm damn glad I did laundry the other day, for all the pants-destruction. F= MA = truly orgasmic Right: dig the walk through on the painting process, the washes really do some heavy lifting don't they. Hard to tell, did you do some OSL (ok, glowiness for the glowy god) on the kommandos' eyes? Cause those lenses scream for it, and I can't tell in these pics. Another thing, are you using resin bases now? Or simply filling your custom ones in for some secret reason (magnets)? Buying premade is certainly easier than scratching your own all the time like you used to, and I'm increasingly impressed by Back to Basix and the like. Other news: I credit you, Bottle (the latest of the Inquisimundaers), Panic & Morehammer (amazing 40k reports) for getting me excited by 40k modeling again. Building a couple dozen chaos warriors for fantasy might have played a part too ... but anyway, psyched to mess with my pig iron + scouts army some more. It's really a troublesome thing about 40k, that the background and modeling flexibility is so fun and rewarding of creativity, but the (mostly meta)game itself can get so stiffling and unattractive. I think sticking with 1000 might save it for me, though even then it depends on your opponent 'playing down' his(/her) army too ... Anyway, happy to see the update so soon, good luck out in the wilderness. - Salvage

Salvage: I am glad to hear you are getting excited about 40k again I really like your sense of aesthetics, and until I can get myself excited about WHFB, I want to see it applied to 40k! If you happen to aquire some scouts, I will have some spare PI heads you can play with. And remember, I always love counts as
What's up on the Mythbusters?
The washes are awesome. I am spending a fair amount of time studying how to use them to avoid having to apply actual paint as much as possible. The color gradations as so much smoother and it makes the process so much faster that I really think there are huge efficiency gains to be made in the production of very nice models en masse. I really like how a base color, some slight highlighting, then a wash makes it look like you spent hours highlighting and blending.
As to the bases, good eyes! I picked up 15 Micro Arts Studio bases from the WarStore when I realized I was getting short on random vehicle bits to cut up. I kind of wanted to do a mini review of them, but didn't get to it. In general, their quality is nice, but they have very few flat surfaces that allow models to stand on (assuming your models are GW figures which expect a flat base to go on) and they are very high on a few, which is awkward. You will see it when you come over next; even Angela was commenting on them. So, eh, still cheaper than buying bits for my own, but perhaps not too well planned. I am fairly happy with them though.
As to the OSL, I might try playing with that a little. I am debating just how daemonically excited I want to make the little guys (as opposed to the marines or daemon engines). Complete dead eyes might be good too, I don't know. I am always torn with that.
That reminds me (and I don't know why) that there was a bleched ground hog skull in the woods by the shooting range here. I should pick that up, put it in some bleach, then mount it on a tank :-P

You are going to be really disappointed when I tell you...
Step 1: Mecharite Red
Step 2: Bolt Gun Metal
Step 3: Devlan Mud
Step 4: Highlight metals back up with Boltgun and Chain Mail.
Step 5: Maybe, MAYBE highlight the red with Vallejo Carmine Red. Maybe.
I will get some better pics of the terminators when I get back home, as they came out really nicely and the photos do not do them justice. This whole project has made me fall deeply in love with the GW washes, as so much has been done nearly entirely with them. I have spent much less time painting this force than I have other armies, and to comparable or better results I think.

Hehe the rust is another easy trick. I primed the model with a rust brown spray. I then got some old jelly that should have been thrown out of the fridge a long time ago, and used a knife to flick gobs of it on. Then I sprayed the grey over it, and after that had dried, washed it in the sink with a tooth brush.
Voila, nice, rough edged rust brown patches. Except for the one glob I missed, which hardened and had a cracked exterior that was pretty cool too, but sorta gross.
After that, I just stippled the lighter colors on it to give it an uneven look.

Yay, finally another update!
Things have been going slowly, mostly due to burning out a little on kitbashing the tanks. I kind of hate doing that, largely due to not having a good process down to work within. All things with time, I suppose.
Also, the Loyalist in me keeps compulsively building Leman Russes and terminators. I might end up taking a short break from the gribblies and pounding out some assault terminators or something, just for a change of pace.
But, before there can be rest, the gods must get their due!
Yay... blurry pictures of kommandos. It's because they are sneaky. Those are the core of the unit, 9 boyz, one with a burna. Snikrot and the other burna boy are still in bits.
And the first 5 shootas. 14 or so to go. Now that I have the process down on these boys, I will probably be able to get the remainder of those that are built (plus the rokkit boy) down by the weekend. I might even get the nob done, who will be an interesting painting challenge.
Now, while the dullcote was drying on those boys, I started playing with the terrain and models that were out from last weekend.
I couldn't get the focus right where I wanted it, and I needed some light diffusing (holding a Baneblade box over the scene while the camera timer ticked didn't quite cut it), but still it was a fun thing to play with for 10-15 minutes
I hope you and enjoy, and C&C are welcome as usual!

I am appeased, mortal. You may now return to your alcove and continue computing things for your capitalist master.
Dig the new guys, yay for FW renegades. Though it is unfortunate how awkward the arm spike arm is, all straight out like that. With the kommandos, are there going to be more flaggelant conversions like the dude on the left? It's somewhat ridiculous to say this about anarchic rabble, but he sorta sticks out currently - the brown below and light (flesh / white) above, vs the other dudes who are the opposite. Clearly you know this, but I'm just saying.
Nice actiony shot too. My money's on the dude with the rock above them - rocks don't overheat!
