If the griefing keeps happening we know it's a player who's seen as a contributor (tightneing the net even more) and it would also force any current griefers to brush up a bit on their wargames and hobby knowledge (it is a wargaming and hobby forum after all) before they can do anything more, which would be a lot of effort for very little in the way of gain and might dissuade them).

One or two people may need to contribute a bit more (but as I said, it's mainly a wargaming and hobby forum) but at the end of the day, it's going to save people a lot of hassle and would prove that you're at least somewhat dedicated to the smooth running of the server.

Only drawback I can see is running through the whitelist and checking over everyone's profile/running through their posting history, which could be quite a large task.

Either that or whomever keeps exposing their lack of social skills and obvious hatred of people for some strange reason or other by striving to inconvenience people because they're so anal that they don't wish to leave their mum's basement, can confess and find another server to plague.

It'll take some time to go through and check everyone, but, I believe it will make the fellowship inside the server stronger (most dakkaites become friends after a while of actually contributing, etc)

I can personally vouch for GorillaWizard, Forbes and Nick. Seeing as I know them in real life.
But i cam more than willing to go through some peoples profiles.
And if we divided and conquered it wouldn't be so muhc of a challenge.

We could check people's profiles ourselves, but our interpretations of a 'contributing member' may differ from Yak's and Lego's, and theirs in turn may differ.

It's only got one drawback, but it's quite a large one, and since Lego and Yak are admins, it'd be their word that counts, and they'd probably end up going through everyone's history anyway to ensure we reached a similar conclusion.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

There is a guy whose only post is asking to be whitelisted, possible griefer?

He's like the third post on the whitelist thread

The griefer cannot be me. The logs will show that I am not on at the time of the grief.

And anyway, everyone trusts the co-commander of a group of Dakkites dedicated to taking down the moderators.

Someone having stole from you probably points to me, as I live literally 2 blocks away from you. But it wasnt, check my chest, kill me if you must, I have nothing to hide.

Also Brother Lucifier, it was a very nice secret room I suggest a metal door with a redstone switch so others cannot stumble across it without opening the metal door first.

OK everyone needs to take a bit of a step back here. The Dakka Minecraft server is something that has been set up as a fun side project. Lego is plenty busy dealing with his family and then when he gets the time working on improving Dakka is the goal...taking time out to figure out if or who is 'griefing' Dakka's MC world is ONLY going to happen if someone goes off the deep end and starts destroying things wholesale.

If you are getting annoyed at small changes happening to things you've made or the occasional piece of kit gone missing, then perhaps multiplayer MC (or at least this server) isn't right for you?

Mutiplayer MC is incredibly glitchy and server crashes frequently cause some items to go missing from your inventory and/or chests and can even cause work you've done in the world to be eradicated. Does that mean there aren't people running around stealing things occasionally or mucking about? Of course not. The whole deal with Minecraft is that you can muck about with the world. But just because someone takes something from your chest or floods your underwater house does not mean they are necessarily a 'griefer'...they can be unaware of what they've done or just not see it as a massively big deal.

Would it be nice if these things didn't happen? Of course, but that's the nature of multiplayer MC opened up to a community. If this was something that we were doing to generate money, etc, then spending a bunch of time and resources going after potential 'griefers' would be a bigger goal, but in this context, you're going to have to deal with it.

If someone really causes havoc then yes, Lego can look through the logs and try to find them and expel them, but please stop complaining about every single thing that gets changed you don't like...I mean, its fine to grumble a bit, as long as you understand that its just the nature of the multiplayer beast.

But if you KEEP complaining about small griefing and KEEP complaining about the server being crashed (which cannot be avoided due to Minecraft's code currently) this is something that we can and will pull the plug on.

Finally, if you are tired of people stealing your stuff please HIDE it. Build a chest, bury that chest and hide your valuable items. Building traps does nothing to prevent people from pilfering your stuff. Sure they may get killed by your trap, but then they'll just come back after respawning and look to dismantle whatever trap you've made to see what it is you're protecting.

The other things traps do is to punish people who are genuinely just coming over to see what stuff you've built. So by building a trap not only do you not discourage potential 'griefers', you also ruin the game for honest friendly people who are interested in the work you've done.

i know it wasn't you jaon as this happened a couple of days before you moved into my tower so don't worry and reason online crashing a lot, theres a message on minecraft login bit which states something like the reason MP is being like it is is because of them play testing new things online so its affecting near enough everyone

Automatically Appended Next Post:
and i have put a sign up room below were i keep all of my valuables saying danger do not enter with out my permission and another sign saying at top of start near enough right before the trap saying you have been warned and i only put a couple of arrows in the dispenser to ward of intruders not to discourage people looking around my tower and theres a back entrance to my tower and if you look carefully enough you can figure out how to open the door
